Yes, custom content can slow The Sims 4, especially startup, loading, and CAS or Build/Buy menus—but ordinary CC is not automatically an FPS killer. The impact depends on what you install, how much is active, the lot and save you are playing, and your PC or Mac. Script and gameplay mods are more likely than simple clothing or furniture to cause Live Mode lag, errors, crashes, or patch problems.

What “slow” means in The Sims 4

Loading time, frame rate, and simulation speed are different things. A large folder may make the game slower to open while leaving Live Mode smooth; a gameplay mod may do the opposite. Identify where the slowdown happens before deleting files.

Symptom Possible causes
Long game startup Many installed files to process, the startup mod list, a slow drive, or another game or system issue.
Long household or lot loading Mods and CC, but also the save, lot, packs, drive, or system resources.
CAS or Build/Buy feels sluggish A large catalog, many thumbnails or assets, high-resolution content, or a menu-related mod.
Low FPS in a particular room or lot Dense decor, detailed meshes, large textures, graphics settings, or GPU/VRAM limits.
Live Mode simulation lag Gameplay or script mods, a complex lot or save, packs, CPU limits, or a game issue.
Errors, missing items, odd behavior, or crashes Outdated, broken, or conflicting content is one possibility; a save or game problem is another.

EA says that it does not set a fixed limit on the number of installed mods, but many mods can require additional memory and CPU resources and affect performance. There is no universal “safe” file count: the contents of the folder, the save, and the hardware all matter. EA’s mod and update guidance also notes that the startup list can slow opening.

CC and gameplay mods do not have the same effect

Custom content usually means player-made assets such as hair, clothes, makeup, furniture, and decor. Gameplay or script mods change behavior: for example, interactions, tuning, traits, careers, UI, autonomy, or simulation. Some content has dependencies or associated scripts, so the distinction is useful but not absolute. EA explains the categories in its installation guide.

Ordinary package CC can add work at startup, occupy storage, expand catalogs, and use memory when its assets are needed. A simple item sitting unused in the Mods folder is not equivalent to a script that repeatedly runs gameplay logic. Conversely, a heavily decorated lot can put more visible objects and textures on screen, so it may affect rendering even if the same files cause little trouble elsewhere.

Content type What to watch for
Makeup, skin details, tattoos Can add to CAS catalog and asset processing; the effect varies with quantity and asset size.
Hair and clothing Can make CAS catalogs larger; detailed meshes or large textures may demand more resources when displayed.
Furniture and decor Usually most relevant to catalog browsing and lots where the objects are placed.
Clutter-heavy sets or detailed objects Many visible objects or complex assets can add rendering load on a dense lot.
Default replacements May affect many Sims or environments rather than just one placed item.
Gameplay and script mods Can affect CPU and simulation, generate errors, conflict with other mods, or become incompatible after a patch.
Broken or outdated files May cause missing or distorted items, unusual behavior, errors, crashes, or save-specific problems.

This is a practical way to prioritize troubleshooting, not a benchmark: no content type guarantees a particular FPS or loading-time change.

How to test whether CC is responsible

Use a controlled comparison instead of guessing. Back up first, test the same activity without Mods, and restore content in batches. EA’s backup and reset instructions recommend preserving the Sims 4 user folder before troubleshooting.

  1. Back up the user folder. It is normally DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4 on PC and under Documents on Mac. Preserve at least saves, Tray, and Mods, along with other files you want to keep.
  2. Close the game and move the entire Mods folder to a temporary location outside the Sims 4 folder. Do not delete it.
  3. Launch and reproduce the problem. Use the same save, household, lot, activity, and graphics settings where possible. Note whether the symptom is startup, loading, CAS, Build/Buy, FPS, or Live Mode lag.
  4. Do not save a CC-dependent save with content disabled. Custom items can be removed when a save is saved without the content it uses. Exit without saving after the test.
  5. Compare with a new, unmodded save if the problem persists. A symptom limited to one household or lot may be tied to that save or its contents rather than the whole library.
  6. If the problem disappears, restore files in batches. Test after each batch. When a batch brings the problem back, split that batch and repeat until you identify the file, group, or interaction involved.
  7. Record the details. Note the game version shown in the lower-left of the Main Menu, operating system, affected save and activity, active batch, and whether the symptom began after a patch.

This is the 50/50 method: divide a suspect group in half, test, and keep narrowing the group that reproduces the issue. EA describes batch testing in its mod-update guidance. If removing Mods changes nothing, investigate the save, game files, packs, drivers, storage, or another system issue instead of assuming the CC folder is at fault.

What to do after a game update

A patch can change code, tuning, UI, or other behavior that a mod depends on. A file that worked before an update may need a creator’s update afterward. EA disables mods after updates as a precaution and recommends testing before restoring them.

  1. Start the game with mods disabled and test Live Mode.
  2. Exit without saving if the save uses CC or mods.
  3. Check the relevant creators’ pages for versions compatible with the current game update.
  4. In Game Options, choose Other and re-enable Enable Custom Content and Mods only when ready to test. Restart the game.
  5. Restore content gradually, prioritizing confirmed-compatible files and watching for the symptom to return.

EA lists errors 102, 123, 125, 127, 129, and 131 as possible clues to script problems, and says error 110 commonly appears after updates because of outdated mods. These codes are clues, not proof that a particular file is responsible. Also, a patch-day problem is not automatically a broken download: EA reported a fix on March 23, 2026 for a launch crash affecting approximately 2% of players using certain types of CC under specific circumstances. That dated incident illustrates why the game itself should remain in the diagnosis. EA’s March 23, 2026 update note lists PC version 1.122.218.1030 and Mac version 1.122.218.1230 for that fix; these are historical versions, not a statement of the current version.

Performance steps worth trying

Start with the likeliest causes

  • Remove or update outdated gameplay and script mods first, especially after a patch or when errors and Live Mode behavior are involved.
  • Use the Mods-off comparison and batch testing above before pruning a stable collection at random.
  • Remove duplicate downloads and old versions left beside replacements. Do not delete files just because they have long names or use the .package extension.
  • If FPS drops mainly on one furnished lot, test that lot with some dense decor removed. If the issue occurs in CAS, look at catalog size and displayed assets; if it occurs in Live Mode, investigate gameplay mods and simulation complexity.
  • EA says the startup mod list can slow opening. To hide it, launch the game and uncheck Show at Startup on that list.
  • Keep enough free storage for the game, saves, and content. EA lists 25 GB of hard-drive space as a minimum for The Sims 4, including 1 GB of additional space for custom content and saved games; that is not a recommended allowance for a large library. See the official FAQ.

Match the symptom to the hardware

Available RAM matters when many assets and applications are competing for memory. CPU capacity matters particularly for simulation-heavy gameplay. GPU performance and VRAM can become relevant with detailed assets, high-resolution textures, high graphics settings, or visually dense lots. Storage type and free space can affect loading and file operations. These are interacting factors, not a promise that a particular upgrade or setting will fix a specific problem.

Save and lot complexity, installed packs, game resolution, and graphics settings also shape the comparison. If the game is still broken after removing downloaded content and testing a clean setup, EA’s reset guide says the cause was not those downloads or saves; continue with game files, drivers, hardware, cloud syncing, packs, or a current game bug.

Cache files, managers, and other troubleshooting traps

Players commonly delete localthumbcache.package while troubleshooting stale thumbnails or cached references. The EA forum community guide identifies the file, but clearing it is community troubleshooting—not an EA guarantee of better performance. It cannot make a poorly optimized mesh efficient or repair an incompatible script. If the issue returns when a particular file is restored, focus on that content or its compatibility.

Third-party managers may help organize downloads, but they do not make incompatible content safe or guarantee faster gameplay. The Sims Resource documents OneDrive interference with its CC Manager’s file access; this is a specific manager-related failure mode, not evidence that cloud syncing causes every Sims 4 slowdown. If using that manager, avoid having multiple sync or management tools manipulate its files at once, and follow its repair guidance rather than using archive tools blindly. See TSR’s reset guidance and its warning about archive and conflict-tool issues.

Who can use CC, and which content channel is different?

EA supports mods and CC on PC and Mac, not on Xbox or PlayStation, so console players cannot follow the folder-based process above. See EA’s platform FAQ.

The official in-game Marketplace is a separate channel from manually installed third-party CC. EA says it launched on PC and Mac on March 17, 2026, with reviewed Maker content and an in-game delivery workflow. This can suit players prioritizing that official route, but it is not the same as a free, unrestricted third-party library. Details are on EA’s Marketplace announcement.
