For a typical two-station room-scale setup, mount compatible VIVE or SteamVR base stations high, outside the play area, at diagonally opposite sides of the room, and aim them toward the center. Keep their views clear and their mounts rigid. Before installing, identify whether your stations are Base Station 1.0 or 2.0: placement is similar, but synchronization and compatibility differ.
What base stations do—and which kind you have
Lighthouse base stations provide tracking references across the play area; they are not cameras that need to sit in front of you. Their elevated positions let tracked devices receive coverage as you move. Not every VIVE headset uses base stations: some models rely on inside-out tracking instead.
“VIVE base station” can mean either generation. Base Station 1.0 is associated with the original HTC VIVE and compatible older hardware. Base Station 2.0 is used by compatible systems such as VIVE Pro-series headsets and Valve Index. Check the exact headset, controllers, and trackers before buying or combining equipment; do not assume the generations can be mixed in a two-station setup.
| Detail | Base Station 1.0 | Base Station 2.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Typical association | Original HTC VIVE and compatible older hardware | Compatible VIVE Pro-series and Valve Index systems |
| Two-station layout | Diagonally opposite sides of the play area | Diagonally opposite sides of the play area |
| Synchronization | Optical synchronization; one station set to B and the other to C in the cited VIVE setup | Wireless synchronization in supported setups; do not use the B/C procedure |
| Angle guidance | Follow the exact model’s instructions; VIVE documentation for some variants gives 30–45° | VIVE’s model-specific guidance gives approximately 25–35° downward |
| Expansion | More limited; confirm compatibility and supported geometry | Additional stations are supported in compatible configurations |

Where to put two stations
- Define the usable play area. Clear the space where you will stand, turn, crouch, and reach. For room-scale, VIVE cites a minimum of 2 m × 1.5 m (6 ft 6 in × 5 ft); seated and standing-only experiences do not have that minimum. See VIVE’s play-area planning guidance.
- Choose opposite diagonal positions. Put one station near each opposing corner, or offset them if a corner is unsuitable. Keep them outside the area where you might swing a controller or collide with hardware.
- Raise them above head height. High wall or ceiling-adjacent positions usually provide better coverage and reduce the chance of a person blocking the tracking view.
- Aim both front panels toward the center. Check that shelves, beams, curtains, monitors, ceiling fans, or furniture do not block the view of the play area.
- Make the mounts immovable. A station that vibrates or shifts can undermine a carefully chosen layout. Secure mounts and route cables so they cannot tug on the devices.
VIVE recommends diagonal, opposite-corner placement with the stations facing the play area. It is a preferred layout, not a requirement to use the exact corners: an offset position can work if coverage remains clear and the station is stable. See VIVE’s Base Station 2.0 installation instructions.
How high, how far apart, and at what angle?
For Base Station 2.0, VIVE’s cited setup guidance recommends mounting above 2 m (6.5 ft) and angling the units approximately 25–35° downward. It also lists 0.5 m (1.6 ft) as a minimum height in that guidance. Treat 0.5 m as a lower boundary, not the preferred room-scale position. Keep tracked objects at least 0.5 m (1.6 ft) from a Base Station 2.0 for best performance, as the same guidance recommends.
The cited two-station Base Station 2.0 guidance sets a maximum spacing of 5 m (16 ft 4 in). That is the distance between stations, not the dimensions of the play area. VIVE’s VIVE Pro 2 documentation gives a 2.0 room-scale range from 2 m × 1.5 m up to 7 m × 7 m (23 ft × 23 ft), while its Base Station 1.0 guidance describes movement within a diagonal area up to 5 m, with an example near 3.5 m × 3.5 m. These area figures are specific to the documented hardware and setup, not universal guarantees. See VIVE’s recommended play-area dimensions.

VIVE lists a 150° horizontal and 110° vertical field of view for the cited Base Station 2.0 documentation. Another VIVE support page gives 30–45° and a different field-of-view figure for other station variants. Follow the manual for your exact model rather than treating one angle as universal. Adjust aim to cover the entire play area, including floor-level positions and the edges—not just your standing head position.
Choose a mount and install it securely
VIVE lists wall mounts, tripods, light stands, cargo poles, and stable bookcases or tables as possible mounting approaches. Stability matters more than the mount category.
| Mount | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Wall mount | You want a permanent, out-of-the-way installation | Requires drilling and suitable anchors; cable routing may take planning |
| Tripod or light stand | You cannot drill or need a temporary layout | Uses floor space and can be knocked over, vibrate, or shift |
| Cargo pole | You need a high position without a wall mount | Must remain tightly secured; poor tension can let it slip or damage surfaces |
| Stable furniture | You are testing placement quickly | Often too low or obstructed, and more vulnerable to bumps and vibration |
For the cited VIVE mounting-kit procedure, concrete or drywall installation uses ¼-inch holes and suitable anchors. Select anchors for the wall material; do not depend on a weak drywall screw for a high-mounted station. The mount instructions use a threaded ball joint, wingnut, and clamping ring:

Support the station whenever you adjust its angle. Keep it out of the controller strike zone. VIVE’s detailed instructions are at Using the mounting kit.
Power and synchronize the stations
Base Station 1.0
For the documented two-station Base Station 1.0 setup, set one station to channel B and the other to channel C, and preserve optical visibility between the stations. Keep the front panels unobstructed. These channel instructions are specific to 1.0; they do not apply to Base Station 2.0. See VIVE’s installation guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Base Station 2.0
Do not assign B/C channels using the 1.0 procedure. Use the compatible 2.0 setup for your headset and stations; synchronization is wireless in supported setups. The installation guidance says to use the power cables and adapters supplied with the stations. Status-indicator behavior varies by hardware, so check the model’s instructions rather than assuming one LED color is universal.

Before room calibration, confirm both stations have power, are detected by SteamVR, and remain firmly fixed. Once the room is calibrated, changing a station’s position or angle requires running Room Setup again.
Run SteamVR Room Setup
- Install the required VIVE and SteamVR software, connect the headset, and start SteamVR.
- Check that the expected base stations appear in SteamVR.
- Open SteamVR → Room Setup. In the cited VIVE user guide, the standing route is SteamVR → Room Setup → Standing only; menu wording may vary slightly by SteamVR version.
- Choose Standing only for seated or stationary standing play, or Room-scale for movement within a defined area.
- Follow the prompts, set the floor and play area, and trace the boundary when asked.
- Test tracking in the center and at the edges, while turning, crouching, and holding controllers low.
VIVE’s guide says to repeat room setup after moving stations or changing their angles. VIVE user guide.

The boundary drifts or the room seems to shift
- Check whether a station, tripod, wall mount, furniture surface, or cable has shifted or loosened.
- Return the stations to their intended positions and confirm both mounts are secure.
- Restart SteamVR if detection is inconsistent, then run Room Setup again after any position or angle change.
A station is not detected
- Check its power adapter, cable, outlet, and whether it is switched on.
- Check the model’s status indicator instructions; colors vary by hardware.
- Confirm the station generation is compatible with the headset and tracked accessories, and inspect for physical damage.
- Check SteamVR’s device status and restart SteamVR if detection remains inconsistent.
You see a gray screen or intermittent tracking
- Look for anything blocking either station’s view of the play area.
- Test with strong light or direct sunlight kept out of the tracking area; VIVE warns that bright light can negatively affect performance.
- Check whether a station or its supporting surface vibrates, or whether a cable is pulling it out of alignment.
- If mirrors, glass, or glossy surfaces are nearby, cover or reposition them temporarily to see whether reflections are contributing.
- Recheck the downward angle and whether the affected area lies outside the supported tracking geometry.
- For Base Station 1.0, verify B/C pairing and optical visibility between stations.
Tracking fails near one corner or at low positions
Check for occlusion from furniture, pillars, or the player’s body, and confirm that both stations are aimed to cover the edges and floor-level movement. If a station is too close to tracked objects, observe VIVE’s 0.5 m (1.6 ft) Base Station 2.0 performance recommendation; it is not described as a universal hard boundary. Repositioning can help, but run Room Setup after changing position or angle.

Should you add more than two stations?
Two stations are the normal starting arrangement for room-scale. Additional Base Station 2.0 units may help in compatible setups with larger spaces, pillars, furniture occlusion, or areas where the player often turns away from one station. VIVE documents a setup process for additional compatible stations at Setting up additional base stations.
More stations do not automatically fix tracking. First address blocked views, reflections or bright light, unstable mounts, incorrect aim, incompatible hardware, and room calibration. Confirm headset, accessory, station-count, and software compatibility before expanding.
Buying a replacement station
Choose by compatibility, not by appearance or price alone. Buy Base Station 1.0 only if the headset and tracked accessories explicitly support that generation. Consider Base Station 2.0 for compatible modern SteamVR systems and supported multi-station expansion. Valve’s official listing recommends two or more stations for room-scale, while a single station may suit limited testing or seated use; verify the needs of your particular headset and experience.
