Sometimes, in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. During the Skellige quest “The Calm Before the Storm,” players can choose a line in which Ciri says she prefers women. It is optional dialogue, not a required declaration in every playthrough or a female romance route. The novels also depict Ciri’s relationship with Mistle; secondary sources interpret her sexuality in different ways, so it is worth separating what the story shows from labels supplied by commentary.
What does Ciri say in The Witcher 3?
In “The Calm Before the Storm,” part of the Skellige sequence, the player can select dialogue for Ciri in which she says that she prefers women. The choice is optional: it is one possible line, not a statement every player must hear or a fixed description imposed on every playthrough. Represent Me’s overview of The Witcher series describes the line, and a 2022 academic article also discusses the player-selected response.
The line is dialogue, not a romance mechanic. It does not create a female romance route for Ciri in The Witcher 3. Jessica Ruth Austin’s 2022 article in the Journal of Comparative Literature and Aesthetics treats the choice as a reference to Ciri’s relationship with Mistle in the novels; that is the scholar’s interpretation, not a direct quote from the game or an official orientation label.
What do the books show about Ciri and Mistle?
The novels depict a relationship between Ciri and Mistle, which is why readers often connect the books to the game’s “prefer women” line. Secondary accounts characterize that relationship and Ciri’s sexuality in different terms. Bi.org calls Ciri bisexual, citing both Mistle and her attraction to men; Austin’s article describes the relationship with Mistle as lesbian. Those are the sources’ characterizations, not interchangeable facts or a verified statement of Sapkowski’s chosen label.

The distinction matters: a relationship with a woman does not, by itself, establish that a character is exclusively attracted to women. Conversely, an optional game line expressing a preference does not erase the book relationship or settle how every reader should label Ciri. Bi.org’s Ciri entry is a secondary reference, not a direct statement by Andrzej Sapkowski.
Is Ciri officially described as lesbian or bisexual?
The official CD Projekt RED character profile, “Ciri – the girl from the prophecy,” introduces Ciri’s identity and role but does not give her a sexual-orientation label. That means the profile cannot be used as official confirmation of either “lesbian” or “bisexual.” The available sources also do not establish a direct author statement assigning her a definitive label. CD Projekt RED’s 2014 character profile is useful for what it says about Ciri, but it does not answer this specific question with a label.

Does The Witcher IV confirm anything about Ciri’s love life?
No. In a December 2024 GameSpot interview, director Sebastian Kalemba said The Witcher IV would include romance, but the interview did not identify Ciri’s partners or specify her orientation. A general confirmation that a game includes romance is not evidence of a particular character’s available romance options. GameSpot’s interview with Kalemba and Małgorzata Mitręga does not settle Ciri’s romantic future.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to answer “Is Ciri a lesbian?” or “Is Ciri bisexual?”
- If you mean the game: Ciri can say she prefers women in an optional dialogue choice in The Witcher 3.
- If you mean the novels: Ciri and Mistle have a depicted relationship, and secondary sources interpret what it means for Ciri’s sexuality.
- If you mean an official label: the cited CD Projekt RED profile does not provide one, and the sources here do not verify a definitive label from Sapkowski.
So “Ciri prefers girls” is a fair shorthand for the optional game line and part of the book context, but it should not be mistaken for an official, exhaustive label or a promise of a game romance route.
