The claim that this would be required “next month” is outdated: Discord delayed its broader global age-assurance rollout to the second half of 2026 and has not given an exact global launch date. Most users are expected to be assigned an age group automatically; confirmation may be requested when someone seeks access to age-restricted content, spaces, or settings.
What Discord’s age checks mean for ordinary use
Discord’s February 2026 update said it was “not requiring everyone to complete a face scan or upload an ID to use Discord.” The company estimated that over 90% of users would continue using Discord as before, with age determined automatically and no additional action required. According to Discord’s current age-confirmation instructions, the check generally matters when an account has not already been classified as adult and its user tries to access age-restricted content, spaces, or settings. Messaging friends, joining voice calls, and using servers that are not age-restricted remain available without adult confirmation.
When the broader rollout is expected
Discord announced teen-by-default settings and a planned global expansion of age assurance in February 2026, then delayed the broader rollout to the second half of 2026. Discord said it would use the delay to expand confirmation options, provide more transparency about vendors, and publish technical documentation. Regional requirements can mean a feature is introduced earlier in some places. For example, Discord’s Australia support page, updated in August 2026, says its regional experience began for new and existing Australian users on December 9, 2025, and that the broader global rollout was planned for the second half of 2026. Its examples of restricted features describe Australia’s experience; they should not be assumed to apply identically in every country.
How Discord assigns an age group
Discord says it first uses information already available to assign accounts to an age group. If it cannot determine an age with enough confidence, an account may remain unclassified. A user who wants access to age-restricted content or settings may then be offered a way to confirm they are an adult. Discord says the available choices depend on factors including region, device, and previous attempts. Its Safety News hub describes the age-estimation approach but does not publish a numeric accuracy rate.

Age-confirmation methods Discord documents
Discord’s support guide currently lists several possible methods. Not all will necessarily appear for a particular account, and Discord says it may ask for a second method if it needs more confidence.

Privacy, data handling, and scam precautions
Discord says facial age estimation runs entirely on-device and that the selfie is not shared with Discord or k-ID. For an ID check, Discord says the ID and matching selfie are deleted immediately after age confirmation, and that it receives only an age signal. Its vendor overview describes k-ID as an orchestrator of methods including credit-card checks, facial age estimation, ID scans with selfies, and AgeKeys. Discord says age confirmation takes place inside the Discord app and that it will not ask users to confirm their age by email or text. Treat an emailed or texted verification link as suspicious; use the in-app flow instead. Discord Support

What to expect if Discord prompts you
- If Discord has already assigned your account an age group, you may not need to do anything.
- If you seek an age-restricted feature and are not classified as an adult, review the options offered in the app. The choices can differ by location, device, and previous attempts.
- If an option requests a face image or ID, check the in-app explanation before proceeding; Discord says a second method may be requested when more confidence is needed.
- Do not submit identity documents through an email or text link claiming to be a Discord age check.
