Reports published in March 2024 describe a 3.5-inch color display, physical controls, a cooling fan and a replaceable battery; those are reported specifications, not results from a hands-on test. CNX Software’s March 20, 2024 report and Tom’s Hardware’s March 18, 2024 report describe the kit.
What is the PiBoy DMGx?
It is a handheld enclosure and hardware kit intended to turn a Raspberry Pi into a portable, Game Boy-inspired gaming device. The reports describe it as supporting Raspberry Pi 5, with adapters mentioned for Raspberry Pi 3 and 4. Those older-board adapters should not be assumed available or compatible without confirmation from a seller or documentation.
The distinction between a kit and a finished console matters: the reported package does not include the computer, prepared storage, or games. A March 2024 listing mentioned by CNX Software showed a historical price of $149.95, but that is not a verified current price.
What hardware is reported?
CNX Software’s March 2024 specifications describe the following features. They have not been independently inspected or tested for this article.

What do you need to build one?
A compatible Raspberry Pi
The kit report identifies Raspberry Pi 5 as the intended board and says Pi 3 and Pi 4 can be used with adapters. Confirm that the board, any required adapter and the kit revision are compatible before buying. The official Raspberry Pi 5 page lists a 2.4 GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 processor, memory configurations from 1 GB to 16 GB, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, Gigabit Ethernet and microSD storage. Those are Pi 5 platform specifications, not a PiBoy compatibility or performance test.

A microSD card and software setup
The reported design has a microSD slot, and the kit description says the builder prepares a card with a PiBoy DMG image based on RetroPie. The cited reports do not establish a currently available image download, a supported software release, or complete installation instructions. Check that the image and setup guidance are still accessible before committing to a build. No card capacity or speed requirement is established in the reports.
Games and power
You must supply any games you want to play. The reports do not provide a measured battery-runtime figure. Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C power supply for the Pi 5; do not assume the handheld’s battery or charging arrangement meets the board’s power needs without kit documentation. What emulation performance should you expect?
Tom’s Hardware’s March 18, 2024 report says performance depends on the game: older systems are easier to emulate, while results for later systems vary. That is a dated editorial assessment, not a benchmark, frame-rate measurement or guarantee for every title, emulator, operating system or configuration. The available reports establish no emulation success rate or independent performance results for the DMGx.
Can you still buy the PiBoy DMGx?
Current authorized sales, inventory and support status are not established. CNX Software reported on March 20, 2024 that the product was not for sale at that time, while noting a $149.95 company-store listing. A domain-sale page for experimentalpi.com appeared in a result crawled in 2026, but that alone does not prove the company has closed or establish whether an authorized seller has stock. Verify the seller, included parts, warranty, shipping region and software downloads before purchasing; do not treat the historical price as current.

Is the PiBoy DMGx a good fit?
It may suit a builder who wants a handheld form factor and is comfortable sourcing a Raspberry Pi, preparing storage and checking software support. It is a less straightforward choice for someone seeking a ready-to-play device or confirmed current support: the reports do not establish present availability, an active software download, battery life or measured emulation performance. Raspberry Pi says the Pi 5 will remain in production until at least January 2036, but that platform commitment does not establish the DMGx kit’s sales or support status.
