Yes. The original Fallout gives you 150 in-game days to find and return the water chip to Vault 13. You can add 100 days by arranging water caravans through the Hub’s Water Merchants. This deadline applies to the water-chip quest—not to finishing the entire game.
How many days do you have to find the water chip?
You have 150 in-game days to complete the water-chip objective before Vault 13 runs out of water. The game tracks the days remaining in the Vault’s water stores, as described in the official Fallout manual; the quest reference gives the deadline as 150 days (Find the Water Chip).
If you reach the Hub, its Water Merchants can arrange caravans to Vault 13. Doing so adds 100 days to the water-chip deadline, according to the quest reference and the legacy Fallout FAQ.
Does the 150-day timer mean you must finish the whole game?
No. The 150 days are for finding and returning the water chip. Completing that quest removes its countdown; the remaining main story has separate objectives. The chip deadline should not be confused with a later timer associated with the mutant threat.

Is there another time limit after the water chip?
There is a separate, version-dependent timer connected to the mutant threat. The Fallout quest and game references describe a 500-day limit in version 1.0 and up to 13 in-game years in later versions. The legacy FAQ says patch 1.1 removed the second timer. These descriptions establish that the original short timer changed substantially, but they do not support one exact post-chip deadline for every version.
The available references also do not establish which patch or configuration is included in each current digital store edition. If exact post-chip timing matters, check the specific build you are playing rather than assuming all editions behave alike.

What happens if you run out of time?
The initial countdown represents Vault 13’s dwindling water supply. The overseer sums up the problem: “Simply put, we’re running out of drinking water.” (Find the Water Chip.) The practical deadline is therefore tied to resolving the water-chip quest, with the Hub caravan as an optional extension—not a requirement to complete every main-story objective within 150 days.
