Sometimes. Whether game sharing includes downloadable content (DLC) depends on the platform, the type of add-on, and the game’s sharing rules. Durable expansions may be shareable while in-game currency is not, and a platform’s console-sharing setup does not necessarily apply to PC. Check the rules for your platform and title before counting on another account’s DLC.
How to tell whether shared DLC will work
Start with three questions: which platform is the game running on, what kind of add-on is it, and what sharing setting or designation applies? A story expansion or map pack is durable content; currency and other consumables may be treated differently. The purchase remains attached to the purchasing account even when another user can access it through a platform’s sharing feature.

- Platform: Steam, Xbox console, Windows PC, Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, and PS5 do not use one universal rule.
- Add-on type: Check whether the item is durable DLC or an account-bound consumable.
- Sharing conditions: Access may depend on a family arrangement, console setting, online connection, or publisher designation.
- Game-specific limits: Some titles or add-ons have exclusions beyond the platform’s general sharing rules.
Steam: DLC sharing depends on the publisher
In Steam Families, a family member playing another member’s game receives DLC owned by that game’s owner only if the publisher has marked it shareable. Steam cautions that some games and content cannot be shared, including certain games that require an additional third-party account or subscription. The purchase does not become the other player’s entitlement.
Steam Support puts the rule this way: “When you launch a game belonging to another member of your Steam Family, you get the DLC that they own that has been marked as shareable by its publisher.” Steam Families FAQ

For a specific game, check whether its publisher allows family sharing and whether the particular DLC is included. Do not assume that every add-on will appear simply because the base game is shared.
Xbox consoles: Home Xbox shares durable add-ons, not consumables
On Xbox consoles, the purchaser’s Home Xbox can share games and durable add-ons, including DLC, with other accounts on that console. Microsoft excludes consumable add-ons such as in-game currency: those remain tied to the purchasing account. Microsoft states, “Ownership of consumable add-ons is entirely per account and isn’t shared.” Microsoft’s add-on licensing guidance

The owner’s access away from their Home Xbox works differently: when they are signed in and connected on another console, roaming licenses may provide access to their library. That access can end if the owner signs out. This is separate from another account’s access through the Home Xbox setting.
Windows PC: do not apply Xbox console rules
Xbox console sharing rules are not a blanket promise that the same game or DLC can be shared on Windows. Microsoft documents distinct Windows license models, including a restrictive option that limits concurrent instances. Entitlement, installation, and simultaneous-use behavior can differ from the console model. Check the license and sharing details for the specific PC game rather than relying on a Home Xbox setup. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2: access follows the purchaser’s account and console setup
Nintendo ties digital games and DLC to the Nintendo Account that bought them. Other users can access the content on a console where the purchaser’s virtual game card is loaded. Nintendo also provides an online license option for using purchased software or DLC while connected to the internet, including setups involving multiple consoles. These options provide access to the purchaser’s content; they do not transfer the purchase to another account. See Nintendo’s virtual game cards and online licenses guidance for the applicable setup and conditions.

With Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on a PS5, other users of that console can play the purchaser’s downloaded games and media, including offline. The setting can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. Sony also describes access to some PlayStation Plus benefits through the console. Its general guidance does not enumerate every DLC type or title-specific exception, so check the game’s own rules for unusual add-ons, currency, or other restrictions. Platform comparison
| Platform | How sharing is set up | DLC and add-on rule | Key condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Steam Families | Only DLC the publisher marks shareable is included. | Some games and content are excluded, including certain third-party-account or subscription titles. |
| Xbox console | Purchaser’s Home Xbox | Games and durable add-ons, including DLC, can be shared; consumables such as currency are account-specific. | Roaming access on another console may depend on the purchaser being signed in and connected. |
| Windows PC | Depends on Microsoft’s Windows license model | Do not assume Xbox console sharing applies; Windows models differ. | Some licensing behavior limits concurrent instances. |
| Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 | Virtual game card loaded on a console, or an online license while connected | Other users may access the purchaser’s games and DLC under the applicable setup. | Content remains tied to the purchasing Nintendo Account. |
| PS5 | Console Sharing and Offline Play, enabled on one PS5 at a time | Other users can access the purchaser’s downloaded games and media; individual add-on exceptions are not fully enumerated in the general guide. | Check the game’s rules for unusual DLC or currency. |
If the DLC is missing, check these things
- Confirm the platform and account: Identify which account bought the add-on and which platform version of the game is being used.
- Check the sharing route: Verify Steam Family eligibility, the purchaser’s Home Xbox, the Nintendo virtual game card or online-license setup, or PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Identify the add-on type: If it is currency or another consumable, it may be account-specific rather than shared.
- Look for title-specific exclusions: On Steam, confirm the publisher marks that DLC shareable; on other platforms, check the game’s support information for exceptions.
- Check connection or sign-in requirements: Nintendo online licenses require an internet connection, and Xbox roaming access can depend on the purchaser staying signed in.
