What changes when you choose Byleth’s gender?
The clearest gameplay difference is class eligibility. Most classes are not gender-locked, but a small group is restricted to one gender. A class reference from Triangle Attack lists these restrictions:

Those are restrictions on particular classes, not a choice between two entirely separate class systems. If one of these classes is central to your build, choose the corresponding Byleth gender before starting.
Does gender affect romance or S-supports?
It affects which S-support options are available. A community-maintained support reference lists different same-gender S-support options for male and female Byleth. That reference is secondary rather than an official Nintendo roster, so check the in-game support menu if a particular character pairing is essential to your choice.

An S-support is a specific support option; it should not be treated as proof that every support conversation or ending is romantic in the same way. The available pairing list is the relevant consideration when planning around a particular character.
Does Byleth’s gender determine your house or route?
No. Nintendo presents choosing a house and choosing a path as decisions separate from gender selection. Its official game description asks, “Which house, and which path, will you choose?” Choose the house and route you want independently of whether Byleth is male or female.

Does gender change which students you can recruit?
The consulted recruitment guide describes student recruitment through skill and stat requirements, with support levels able to lower those thresholds. It says A support or higher allows student recruitment regardless of those thresholds. The guide does not identify Byleth’s gender as a condition, so do not choose gender on the assumption that it unlocks or blocks a student.
For an individual recruitment goal, follow that character’s listed skill, stat, support, and chapter conditions rather than relying on a general gender rule. See Triangle Attack’s recruitment guide for its requirements.

How to choose between male and female Byleth
- Choose female Byleth if you want access to Pegasus Knight, Falcon Knight, or Gremory.
- Choose male Byleth if you want access to Dark Mage, Dark Bishop, Brawler, Grappler, War Master, or Hero.
- Check S-support eligibility if you already have a particular partner in mind; verify the pairing in the game’s support menu.
- Choose house and route separately. Gender is not the house or path decision.
- Plan recruitment around requirements. Use the relevant student’s skill, stat, support, and chapter conditions.
