Several NPC storylines continue there. The important distinction is between arriving in Altus and taking later actions, especially entering Volcano Manor before speaking with Rya or defeating Rykard.
Does reaching Altus Plateau lock quests?
Altus is a progression area, not a universal quest cutoff. Brother Corhyn and Goldmask have steps there, and Millicent’s quest also advances in the region. Your earlier interactions still matter, so a character’s location or available dialogue can depend on what you have already done.
Some progression-related changes are version-sensitive: Bandai Namco’s official patch notes for Elden Ring version 1.04 include a quest-progression fix involving the Tonic of Forgetfulness. That is a reason to treat edge cases cautiously, not evidence that simply reaching Altus ruins a quest.
What continues in Altus Plateau?
Brother Corhyn and Goldmask
After you reach Altus, Corhyn can be found north of the Altus Highway Junction. Their story continues with Goldmask on the Forest-Spanning Greatbridge and later in Leyndell. The significant cutoff is much later: advancing the game to its endgame state can lock this storyline if it has not been progressed far enough. Altus contains an ordinary continuation of Millicent’s quest, not a sign that her story has been ruined: retrieve Valkyrie’s Prosthesis from Shaded Castle in northern Altus and give it to her, then continue to Windmill Village. When can Volcano Manor actions cause problems?
Volcano Manor is a separate concern from entering Altus. If you want Blackguard Big Boggart’s quest and wares, speak with Rya in Liurnia before entering the manor. The Elden Ring wiki warns that entering Volcano Manor first can make Boggart’s quest and wares inaccessible.
Rya’s story and the manor’s invasion contracts have their own later cutoff: defeating Rykard makes remaining Rya steps and Volcano Manor contracts unavailable. Finish the manor content you care about before fighting him. These are specific consequences of entering the manor or defeating its boss—not of reaching Altus itself. Whether reaching Altus triggers the Radahn Festival—and whether resting at a Site of Grace or another progression event is needed—cannot be stated reliably from the available accounts, which conflict. Do not assume that arriving in Altus always triggers the festival. If you are trying to preserve a particular NPC’s location or dialogue, check that character’s status in your own playthrough rather than relying on a universal trigger rule.

Safest order if you want to preserve optional content
- Before entering Volcano Manor, speak with Rya in Liurnia if you want to keep Boggart’s quest and wares available.
- Explore Altus and advance Corhyn, Goldmask, and Millicent as desired; reaching the region is not itself a quest-ending action.
- Complete any Volcano Manor contracts and Rya-related steps you want before defeating Rykard.
- Advance Corhyn and Goldmask’s storyline before pushing the game into its endgame state if you want to avoid its later lockout.
