No confirmed new or improved Nintendo Switch physical release of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is established by the official sources available. The existing physical edition dates to 2021, and Nintendo says it requires an internet download. That wording does not establish that the entire game must be downloaded or that the cartridge contains no game data.
What is confirmed about the Switch physical edition?
Rockstar announced the trilogy’s digital launch for November 11, 2021, followed by physical editions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox consoles on December 7, 2021. Rockstar’s release announcement describes that original release, not a later cartridge revision. Nintendo UK lists November 11, 2021 as the Switch release date.
Nintendo UK’s product page warns: “Please note that an internet download is required for the physical version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.” This confirms a download is required, but Nintendo does not specify there how much must be downloaded or what content is present on the cartridge. It is therefore not accurate to say, based on that notice alone, that the whole collection is downloaded or that the cartridge is empty.
Does a newer release fix the download requirement?
The official pages reviewed do not confirm a new physical re-release, a revised Switch cartridge, or a version containing all game data on the cartridge. Rockstar’s support page lists title update notes for version 1.112 and was last updated November 25, 2024; update notes document software updates, not a new physical edition. Without an official announcement or product listing identifying a different cartridge, claims that a “proper” new edition has arrived remain unverified.

What should buyers check before choosing the physical copy?
- Plan for internet access: Nintendo UK states that an internet download is required for the existing physical version.
- Do not infer the download size: Nintendo Australia lists the game size as 22.6 GB, but does not identify that figure as the size of the required download. The listing’s size is territory-specific and its year is not stated.
- Distinguish a restock from a revision: Availability of the 2021 physical edition would not by itself prove that the cartridge or included data has changed. Look for an official product description or announcement that explicitly identifies a revised edition and details its cartridge contents.
