The PSN-linking requirement planned for Helldivers 2 on Steam in May 2024 was withdrawn before it took effect. Arrowhead later described linking as optional. However, Steam’s listing checked on October 8, 2026, still labels a PlayStation Network account as required, and the available official updates do not establish whether that label reflects current enforcement or outdated metadata. If you are playing now, follow the prompts shown in-game rather than assuming the 2024 schedule still applies.
What happened to the planned PSN requirement?
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the plan on May 2, 2024. It said new Steam players would need to link a PSN account starting May 6, while existing players would begin seeing a mandatory login on May 30 and have until June 4 to complete linking. Sony said launch-period technical issues had made linking temporarily optional. It described the measure as a way to support bans for griefing and abuse and appeals by banned players, and said PSN accounts were free at that time. Sony’s May 2 Steam announcement
On May 6, Sony updated the announcement and withdrew the planned change: “The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.” Sony added that it was still learning what worked best for PC players and that their feedback had been invaluable. Arrowhead Game Studios’ May 14, 2024 patch notes for Patch 1.000.304 then said: “Optional account linking now available in the Account section of the in-game settings.” That confirms the option was available in that patch; it does not establish whether Steam players face a requirement today. Is linking mandatory on Steam now?
The current status is unresolved in the available official information. Steam’s Helldivers 2 product page, checked October 8, 2026, displays “Requires 3rd-Party Account: PlayStation Network (Supports Linking to Steam Account).” That conflicts with Sony’s withdrawal of the 2024 mandate and Arrowhead’s subsequent description of linking as optional. The sources do not say whether Steam’s current label reflects a later enforcement change or stale listing information. Helldivers 2 on Steam
So the answer depends on the timeframe: the announced May/June 2024 requirement did not go forward, but the current Steam listing says a PSN account is required, and the cited official updates do not settle what players are actually required to do now. Check the game’s current Account settings or any login prompt you receive; do not rely on the withdrawn 2024 dates as present-day instructions.

What linking does—and does not do
Linking your Steam and PSN accounts does not transfer saves or progression between PC and PS5. Arrowhead’s support FAQ says Helldivers 2 does not support cross-save or cross-progression, and that linking accounts does not merge them or move progression between platforms. Arrowhead Game Studios FAQ
