Helldivers 2: How to Use the Railgun Effectively

Use the RS-422 Railgun as a precision anti-armor weapon: safe mode is intended for medium armor, while unsafe mode with overcharge is Arrowhead’s guidance for heavier targets such as Chargers and Bile Titans. In either mode, aim for a head or another weak point rather than relying on shots to a heavily armored body.

Choose safe or unsafe mode for the target

Arrowhead’s Head of Product Testing, Patrik Lasota, described the Railgun as “a high powered anti-tank sniper rifle” that requires timing in unsafe mode and accuracy. Arrowhead’s March 25, 2024 balance commentary also says safe mode can penetrate medium armor but not heavier targets such as Chargers and Bile Titans.

Aim for weak points, not just the target

Line up the shot on the enemy’s head or another exposed weak point. Arrowhead’s commentary says the Railgun’s effectiveness against large armored targets depends on weak-point hits, after damage against massive body parts was reduced. This makes shot placement central to the weapon’s anti-armor role, whether you are using safe or unsafe mode.

With unsafe mode, wait until the target is exposed and the sight is on the intended weak point before releasing. Overcharge carries risk by design, and the official guidance emphasizes timing and accuracy; it does not establish a guaranteed number of shots to kill.

Switch modes using your displayed controls

1. Use the weapon-function direction input to open or change the Railgun’s Safe/Unsafe setting.
2. Select the mode appropriate to the target: safe for medium armor, or unsafe for heavier armor.
3. Follow the binding shown in your own control settings. Arrowhead’s August 30, 2026 note moves the Railgun’s Safe/Unsafe function from the right to the left weapon-function direction, but does not specify universal button labels for every platform or custom binding.

The control change appears in Arrowhead’s Into the Unjust: 6.0.1 notes. It is a control update, not a stated change to damage or penetration.

Build the rest of the squad around its role

The Railgun rewards precise shots against armor; it is not a reason to expect one support weapon to handle every enemy efficiently. Arrowhead’s balance commentary recommends relying on stratagems and teammates’ loadouts to handle enemies effectively. Plan complementary coverage for threats that do not suit the Railgun rather than treating one particular companion build as best for every faction or mission.

What the dated balance notes establish

• April 26, 2024: Patch 01.000.100 reduced Safe Mode armor penetration and damage against durable enemy parts.
• June 4, 2026: Patch 01.003.000 reduced the listed RS-422 Railgun spread value from 10 to 0.1.
• August 30, 2026: Into the Unjust: 6.0.1 moved the Safe/Unsafe function direction from right to left.

These are dated changes, not a complete current stat sheet. The cited official material does not establish current numeric damage, an exact charge breakpoint, or universal kill-shot counts. Check current patch notes and your in-game controls if a later update changes the weapon.
