Does It Matter If You Fight or Act in Deltarune?

Fighting and using ACT both matter in Deltarune: they can change recruitment, Castle Town activities, chapter-limited stats, and some story scenes, despite the game having one ending.

Yes. Fighting and using ACT can affect recruitment, Castle Town activities, chapter-specific stats, dialogue, and some events—even though DELTARUNE has one ending. From Chapter 2 onward, sparing or pacifying eligible enemies recruits them; defeating them violently makes them permanently lost. Violence also gives your party limited stat increases for the rest of that chapter. Bosses are an exception: some cannot be defeated violently, while others cannot be defeated nonviolently.

What changes when you fight instead of ACT?

The choice is not a simple good-route versus bad-route switch. The official DELTARUNE gameplay reminder describes several consequences, especially from Chapter 2 onward:

Choice Immediate result Longer-term effect
Use ACT, then SPARE Raises an eligible enemy’s MERCY until it can be spared. Starting in Chapter 2, sparing recruitable enemies adds them to the recruitment system for Castle Town. Enough of the same type are needed to fully recruit it.
Use PACIFY Defeats a TIRED enemy nonviolently if Ralsei has at least 16% TP. Starting in Chapter 2, pacifying recruitable enemies recruits them for Castle Town.
Defeat an enemy violently Ends the encounter by defeating the enemy. Starting in Chapter 2, violence raises party HP, Attack, and Magic for the rest of that chapter, up to a limit. A recruitable enemy defeated violently becomes LOST and cannot be recruited.

The stat increase is a chapter-limited gameplay benefit, not evidence that violence is required to progress. Recruitment, by contrast, can affect what is available in Castle Town and may be carried into a later chapter when you continue with completion data.

How to spare or pacify an enemy

Raise MERCY and choose SPARE

  1. Choose ACTs that target the enemy. These raise that enemy’s MERCY.
  2. When MERCY reaches 100%, choose SPARE. The target menu marks an enemy ready to spare with a yellow name and a star.

Use PACIFY on a TIRED enemy

  1. Make the enemy TIRED. Some ACTs or HP loss can do this.
  2. Have Ralsei cast PACIFY while the party has at least 16% TP. A blue name and “Zz” mark a target that can be pacified.

ACT is the usual route to a nonviolent victory, but it is not a universal solution for every encounter. The official guide specifically warns that some bosses cannot be defeated with violence and some cannot be defeated nonviolently.

What recruitment changes in Castle Town

Recruitment begins in Chapter 2. Sparing or pacifying eligible enemies recruits them; recruiting enough of a type fully adds it to Castle Town. The official reminder says recruiting more enemies can unlock town activities. The community-maintained DELTARUNE Wiki’s route documentation gives examples including the Party Dojo’s “Ch2 All Stars” challenge and Sweet Cap’n Cakes’ Music Room. These are examples of recruitment-linked content, not a promise that every spared enemy unlocks a separate activity.

If a recruitable enemy is defeated violently, it becomes LOST and cannot be recruited—even if it had been recruited previously. That makes a violent defeat different from simply choosing not to recruit an enemy yet.

Chapter-specific scenes and events

The official guide says that failing to recruit certain enemies or using violence consistently may have minor effects on some story scenes. More detailed route-by-route examples come from the community wiki, so treat them as secondary documentation rather than official instructions.

  • Chapter 1: The wiki documents a pacifist outcome in which Card Kingdom Darkners help overthrow King and the party visits the Card Castle rooftop before sealing the fountain. In the violent outcome, King is put to sleep and the party flees without returning to say goodbye. The chapter also has an apology mechanic that can restore the pacifist outcome in limited circumstances.
  • Chapter 2: Recruitment affects Castle Town activities, while violently defeating eligible enemies makes them LOST.
  • Chapter 3 and later: The wiki documents later scene and event differences tied to violence and recruitment, including whether characters help repair Tenna. The details are specific to those chapters and should not be treated as a single universal route rule.

Do your choices matter if Deltarune has one ending?

Yes. The official DELTARUNE FAQ says there is one ending, but when asked whether that means nothing the player does matters, it answers: “There’s something more important than reaching the end.” The gameplay reminder’s recruitment, stat, town-activity, and scene effects show what that distinction means: a single ending does not make encounters consequence-free.

What carries into another chapter?

When you continue using completion data, collected items, money, equipment, and choices carry forward. Starting a chapter without completion data instead uses a default state, including some default recruits and an assumption that the party has not been unnecessarily violent. If preserving recruits and prior choices matters to you, continue from the relevant completed chapter rather than starting fresh.

Which approach should you choose?

  • For recruitment and Castle Town content: use ACT to raise MERCY and SPARE, or PACIFY eligible TIRED enemies.
  • For the chapter’s stat boost: violent defeats provide limited HP, Attack, and Magic increases from Chapter 2 onward, at the cost of losing eligible recruits.
  • For a particular boss: follow the encounter’s requirements; the official guide says both violent-only and nonviolent-only exceptions exist.
