“Poyo” is a recognizable sound associated with Kirby, especially with the anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya! and fan descriptions of his voice. But the available evidence does not establish it as a word he says consistently in the games or as an officially confirmed franchise-wide catchphrase.
What does “poyo” mean when people talk about Kirby?
It is a spelling fans use for a sound associated with Kirby, rather than a word with an established translation. Kirby is often represented through chirps, squeaks and other nonverbal vocalizations; writing one of those sounds as “poyo” turns it into an easy-to-recognize label.
A retrospective by PCGamesN connects “Poyo” particularly with the anime. It also attributes Kirby’s nonverbal characterization to creator Masahiro Sakurai, but that is a secondary account, not a verified direct quotation.
Does Kirby say “poyo” in the games?
Fans may hear and transcribe some of Kirby’s game sounds as “poyo,” but that does not establish the sound as a consistent spoken line across the games. A fan discussion asking whether Kirby actually says it in games shows that players do not all describe or remember the vocalizations the same way; it is not a definitive catalog of game dialogue (Reddit discussion).

CyberPost likewise describes game sounds as mostly chirps and squeaks and presents “poyo” as a fan transcription of a recurring sound. Its account says Nintendo has not explicitly confirmed the phrase as an official catchphrase; that is a secondary source’s report, not a formal ruling from Nintendo (CyberPost).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is “poyo” so strongly associated with Kirby?
The anime portrayal is a major reason the sound is familiar: descriptions of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! commonly associate Kirby with saying “Poyo.” That association also appears in fan discussions, including questions about why he says it (Reddit discussion). These descriptions support the anime connection, but they do not prove that every game uses the same vocalization or that the sound has a fixed linguistic meaning.
