Yes—with an important qualification. Mass Effect: The Board Game – Priority: Hagalaz puts squad tactics, enemies, and mission objectives at the center of play, but it is still a branching, story-driven campaign. Its focus is best described as tactical missions inside a Mass Effect story, not action instead of narrative.
What do you actually do in Priority: Hagalaz?
Players take Commander Shepard and a squad into a crashed Cerberus research cruiser on Hagalaz, with a storm approaching. The campaign is set during the events of Mass Effect 3. Rather than commanding fleets in a competitive space-opera contest, players cooperate to face enemies and complete mission objectives.
Those activities make the tactical side concrete: players choose and customize squadmates, use character abilities, and develop their squad over the campaign. The publisher describes specialization in biotics, tech, and combat, with options to mix those approaches. Experience and ability upgrades shape progression, while optional loyalty missions can unlock unique talents.
How much does the story matter?
Story is part of the game’s structure, not just its setting. Priority: Hagalaz is described by its publisher as a cooperative, story-driven campaign with branching choices that influence later missions. Paragon and Renegade decisions can lead to different rewards, and loyalty missions connect character development to the campaign.
#1 Best Overall
- IMMERSIVE STORY: Dive into the Mass Effect universe as Commander Shepard, leading a squad through a Cerberus cruiser to unveil secrets before a massive storm hits Hagalaz.
- DYNAMIC GAMEPLAY: Experience a unique card-driven AI and evolving story that alters based on your choices, ensuring a different gameplay experience with each session.
- DEEP CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION: Equip and upgrade your squad, including iconic characters like Liara and Garrus, with powerful abilities and gear as you progress through the game.
- COOPERATIVE MISSIONS: Engage in a co-operative, narrative-driven campaign for up to four players, featuring optional loyalty missions that unlock special powers for each squadmate.
- MULTIPLE ENDINGS: A branching narrative with a variety of endings based on your decisions, enhancing replay value and player engagement.
So the title’s tactical-versus-space-opera contrast is an interpretation of the advertised play emphasis, not a measured comparison. The available product descriptions support saying that squad decisions and mission play are prominent; they do not establish that narrative is unimportant or that players generally experience one side as dominant.
Who is it for, and how much campaign time does it take?
Modiphius lists the game for 1–4 players, ages 14+, with sessions of 45–90 minutes. The same product page says chapters average 45 minutes to an hour and a story spans 3–5 chapters. Asmodee USA gives an average play time of 60 minutes. These are publisher and retailer estimates, so the chapter and campaign guidance gives a more practical sense of the commitment than any single session figure.

- Last Friday Revised Edition is the updated and revised version of our hidden movement, hunting, and deduction board game, inspired by the popular "slasher" horror movie genre. Subtle but important changes to the rules enhance the game balance, giving to the Maniac more opportunities than ever to spread terror in Camp Apache! This revised edition also features new cover art.
- In the role of young campers during Summer in 1980, five players are challenged to survive a long weekend of terror in a camp in the woods, while one of them takes the role of the undying psychopath hiding in the shadows of the forest.
- Depending on which of the four “chapters” you play, the goal of the game changes, creating highly engaging gameplay: in some chapters the maniac is trying to find the campers, but in others, they are trying to find him. Each chapter plays out differently as the hunter becomes the prey, and then comes back from the dead looking for revenge.
- If a player dies during a chapter, they will come back in the next chapter with a different character, adding an additional level of replayability.
- Last Friday Revised Edition is a game for 2 to 6 players, divided into four chapters full of horror and suspense (“Arrival at the Camp”, “The Chase”, “The Massacre”, and “The Final Chapter”), with a playing time of 30 to 45 minutes per chapter, which you can play individually or together in a long night of terror!

If you want cooperative missions where squad composition, abilities, and progression matter, the official description gives you a solid reason to consider it. If you want a campaign driven chiefly by story choices, the branching narrative and loyalty missions are also central features. The strongest fit is for someone who wants both: Mass Effect’s characters and consequential choices framed by cooperative mission play.

- For 3 to 7 players
- 30 minute playing time
- Great strategy game
That conclusion rests on the published design description, not on a quantified comparison with other narrative or tactical games, and it should not be read as a claim based on a playtest.
