Yes—if you’re playing the existing Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft on Switch 2, you can play online with people on other platforms when everyone is using Bedrock Edition. Nintendo’s dedicated Switch 2 version is scheduled for October 27, 2026; as of October 7, Nintendo had not announced its specific cross-play details.
Which Minecraft version on Switch 2 supports cross-play?
Nintendo says the existing Nintendo Switch version can play with people on other platforms as long as everyone uses Bedrock Edition. Nintendo also says Switch 2 is compatible with supported Switch software, and its Minecraft listing identifies the Switch game as available on Switch 2. Together, those statements support cross-play when you run the existing Switch game on compatible Switch 2 hardware. Nintendo’s Minecraft for Nintendo Switch listing and Switch 2 announcement document the distinction.

The existing Switch game
This is the documented cross-play route for someone playing Minecraft on Switch 2 today: run the Nintendo Switch version, which uses Bedrock Edition, and join players using Bedrock on their own devices.
The dedicated Switch 2 version
Nintendo announced a separate Switch 2 version for October 27, 2026. Its August 5 announcement said a digital upgrade path would be available to people who already own Minecraft on Switch, with more details to follow. As of October 7, the announcement did not specify how cross-play would work in that dedicated version, so its details should not be assumed from the existing Switch game.
#1 Best Overall
- Build whatever you can imagine in your own infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.
Which platforms can join a Switch 2 Minecraft game?
For cross-play, the key is the edition, not simply the device. Minecraft lists Bedrock for Windows 10/11, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and mobile. Players need compatible Bedrock versions; platform support does not guarantee every server, region, operating system, or game build can join every session. Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock guide and platform comparison describe the editions and listed platforms.
Xbox
Yes. An Xbox player can join the Switch Bedrock game, provided both players are using Bedrock Edition.

PC
A PC player can join if they launch Minecraft Bedrock for Windows 10/11. The Java Edition alone cannot join a Switch Bedrock session.
PlayStation and mobile
Bedrock players on the listed PS5 and mobile platforms can play with Switch Bedrock players, subject to compatible versions and online access.
Rank #3
- Drop the pickaxe, grab a sword, and charge into a thrilling new adventure in the Minecraft Dungeons II Deluxe Edition
Can Java and Bedrock play together?
No. Minecraft says Java and Bedrock use different servers and cannot play together. If a friend on PC owns or launches only Java Edition, they cannot join your Switch Bedrock multiplayer game; they need to use Bedrock instead. Minecraft’s edition guide explains the difference.
What you need for online cross-play
- Bedrock Edition for every player. Match the edition across devices; Java does not join Bedrock multiplayer.
- A Microsoft Account on Switch. Nintendo says signing in lets Switch players play with people on non-Nintendo devices. Nintendo describes the account as free.
- Nintendo Switch Online and internet access. Nintendo lists both as requirements for online features. A Microsoft Account does not replace the console’s online service requirement. Nintendo’s product listing gives the online requirements, and Minecraft’s multiplayer help also names Nintendo Switch Online among console subscription examples.
Online cross-play versus local wireless
Online cross-play connects players over the internet across platforms, subject to the edition and online requirements above. Nintendo lists local wireless as a separate Switch multiplayer mode; it is not the same thing as joining a friend on Xbox, PC, PlayStation, or mobile over the internet.
