The 2023 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III plays on Xbox One if you get the Xbox Cross-Gen Edition, which includes versions for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The separate 2011 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 also works on Xbox One through backward compatibility using its Xbox 360 version.
Which Modern Warfare 3 do you mean?
| Game | Xbox One version to look for | How it plays on Xbox One |
|---|---|---|
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023) | Xbox Cross-Gen Edition | Includes a version playable on Xbox One, as well as Xbox Series X|S. (Activision Editions FAQ) |
| Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011) | Xbox 360 version | Playable on Xbox One through backward compatibility. (Activision Xbox One Backward Compatibility FAQ) |
Activision lists Xbox One as a platform for the 2023 game, released November 10, 2023. The similar names can make store listings easy to confuse, so check the year and console version before buying. (Activision’s Modern Warfare III page)
What edition should you buy for the 2023 game?
Choose the Xbox Cross-Gen Edition. Activision describes it as including a cross-gen version of Modern Warfare III playable on Xbox Series X and Xbox One. The FAQ identifies both digital and physical Cross-Gen editions; for a physical copy, confirm that the specific listing says Xbox and Cross-Gen rather than assuming any listing with “Modern Warfare III” will work on your console. (Activision Editions FAQ, updated October 1, 2024.)
How do you install Modern Warfare III on Xbox One?
Installation depends on whether you own the digital or disc edition. Activision’s setup guide, updated June 30, 2026, says the game moved outside the Call of Duty experience as a standalone title. Follow the current prompts shown by your console.

Does the 2011 Modern Warfare 3 need an Xbox 360?
No. The 2011 game’s Xbox 360 version is supported on Xbox One through backward compatibility. Make sure you are choosing the Xbox 360 version of the 2011 title; it is not the 2023 Xbox Cross-Gen Edition. Activision’s backward-compatibility FAQ explains the supported game and purchase paths: Xbox One Backward Compatibility FAQ.

Can you use crossplay and cross-progression?
Activision says crossplay continues across platforms and progression carries across platforms linked to the same Activision account. Its page does not establish the availability of particular modes, matchmaking, or service status, which may change. (Activision’s Crossplay and Cross-Progression page, dated July 15, 2026.)
