Nintendo Switch 2 has a custom NVIDIA processor with Tensor Cores for DLSS AI upscaling and dedicated RT Cores for real-time ray tracing. NVIDIA lists maximum capabilities of up to 4K gaming in TV mode and up to 1080p at 120 FPS in handheld mode, but those are system ceilings—not settings every game is guaranteed to reach.
What DLSS and ray tracing do on Switch 2
DLSS uses AI upscaling
NVIDIA says the Switch 2 processor’s Tensor Cores support DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling. The technology uses AI upscaling to render an image at a lower resolution and reconstruct it at a higher output resolution, aiming to sharpen detail while reducing the rendering burden. The console’s support does not mean every game will use DLSS; implementation and results depend on the game.

Ray tracing handles lighting effects
The dedicated RT Cores support real-time ray tracing. NVIDIA describes the effects as realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows. Whether those effects appear, and how extensively, is up to each game. Hardware support alone does not guarantee ray tracing in every title.
Switch 2 resolution, frame rate, and display features
NVIDIA says Switch 2 can reach up to 4K gaming on a TV and up to 1080p at 120 FPS in handheld mode. These are maximum platform capabilities, not promises that a particular game will run at those settings. A game may target a lower resolution or frame rate, and its use of DLSS or ray tracing can vary.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch display. NVIDIA also identifies HDR and handheld variable refresh rate through NVIDIA G-SYNC among the system’s display capabilities. These features describe what the platform supports; individual game output and display compatibility affect what you see.
Is Switch 2 worth buying for graphics?
DLSS and hardware ray tracing give developers tools to improve image quality and lighting, while the stated resolution and frame-rate ceilings offer more headroom than a simple fixed-output promise would. But the console’s graphics experience is game-dependent. For a buying decision, check the particular games you want for their docked and handheld targets, frame-rate options, and whether they actually use DLSS or ray tracing. Also consider whether you value portable play and access to compatible Switch games, rather than choosing on peak resolution alone.

Switch 2 price, bundles, and compatibility
Nintendo released Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s Japanese launch announcement listed a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of 49,980 yen for the Japanese-language system; that is a Japan-specific launch price, not a universal current price. Retail prices, stock, and bundle availability vary by region and can change.
The main purchase options described for the console are the standalone Switch 2 system and the Mario Kart World bundle, which includes a digital copy of Mario Kart World. Nintendo also offers an optional Switch 2 camera, a USB accessory relevant to GameChat. Nintendo says GameChat supports voice chat for up to 12 people, while up to four people can share screens and video chat.

NVIDIA confirms that the custom processor includes Tensor Cores and RT Cores, and describes the system as offering up to 4K TV-mode gaming and handheld output up to 1080p at 120 FPS. Its announcement also says the graphics performance is ten times that of the original Nintendo Switch; this is NVIDIA’s platform-level comparison, not a guarantee of a tenfold improvement in every game or visual setting.
Nintendo’s release announcement establishes the June 5, 2025 launch date, the 49,980-yen Japanese-language system MSRP, and compatibility with existing Switch games subject to exceptions. Neither company’s platform figures specify settings for every individual game, so title-specific performance remains the meaningful comparison.
