For Remote Play, PlayStation Portal needs a paired PS5 and broadband Wi-Fi, but it does not require PlayStation Plus. A separate cloud-streaming mode can play select games without your PS5 running, but it requires PlayStation Plus Premium. A game may also require Plus for its own online multiplayer.
What Portal needs for Remote Play
Remote Play streams compatible games installed on your paired PS5 to Portal, which works as the console’s screen and controller. PlayStation says a PS5 and PlayStation account are required. The console must be connected to broadband, powered on or in Rest Mode, and paired with Portal. PlayStation’s Portal product page and FAQ state these requirements.

- A PS5: Remote Play uses your console and games installed on it.
- Broadband Wi-Fi: PlayStation lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for Portal use and recommends 15 Mbps for a better play experience.
- No PlayStation Plus membership just to use Remote Play: PlayStation’s FAQ says Remote Play does not require a Plus membership.
Plus can still be required by an individual game for online multiplayer. That is a game-specific requirement, not a general requirement for Portal or Remote Play.
Can you use Portal without a PS5?
Not for Remote Play: that mode streams from your own paired PS5. Portal also offers a distinct cloud-streaming feature that can launch select supported PS5 games without your PS5 being on. In cloud streaming, the game runs through the streaming service rather than from your console.

Remote Play versus cloud streaming
| What differs | Remote Play | Cloud streaming on Portal |
|---|---|---|
| Does your PS5 need to be available? | Yes. It must be connected to broadband, powered on or in Rest Mode, and paired with Portal. | No. PlayStation says your PS5 can be off or in use by another account. |
| Is PlayStation Plus required? | No, not for Remote Play itself. | Yes. An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required. |
| Where does the game come from? | A compatible game installed on your paired PS5. | Select supported PS5 games, including eligible catalog titles and select digital games in your library. |
| Internet speed guidance | PlayStation lists 5 Mbps minimum and recommends 15 Mbps for a better play experience. | PlayStation lists 5 Mbps minimum upload and download to establish streaming, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p. |
Cloud-streaming requirements and eligible titles are explained on PlayStation’s cloud-streaming page. Availability depends on territory, account eligibility, and the games supported; the selection can change over time. It does not make every PS5 game streamable.
Does Portal need your home Wi-Fi?
No. PlayStation says Portal can be used over broadband Wi-Fi away from home; you do not have to be on the same network as your PS5. Actual connection quality depends on the network in use, so public or shared Wi-Fi may be less consistent. PlayStation also notes that some public networks with additional validation steps require Portal system software 3.0.1 or later and a smartphone or tablet to complete sign-in. Initial Portal setup must first be completed on home Wi-Fi.

The separate cloud-streaming page specifies 5 Mbps minimum upload and download to establish streaming, with 7 Mbps for 720p and 13 Mbps for 1080p. Those are service thresholds, not a guarantee of smooth play: network stability and conditions also matter.
