Yes. Pokémon GO’s optional Adventure Sync can record distance while the game is closed, then use that progress toward Buddy Candy and Egg hatching. It must be enabled and connected to Apple Health or Google Fit first; simply closing the game does not turn it on.
What Adventure Sync tracks when Pokémon GO is closed
Niantic describes Adventure Sync as a feature that records kilometers traveled even when Pokémon GO is not open. The game uses activity data from Apple Health on iOS or Google Fit on Android. This is distance tracking, not a guarantee that every step or every walk will be credited. Fitness activity manually entered into Apple Health or Google Fit does not count toward Adventure Sync progress, and Niantic does not publish a tracking-accuracy figure.
How to enable Adventure Sync
- In Pokémon GO, open the main menu and go to Settings > General.
- Turn on Adventure Sync and approve the requested connection to Apple Health or Google Fit.
- Allow Pokémon GO the location access it requests for use while the game is closed. The precise permission labels and settings paths vary by phone and operating-system version; Niantic lists platform-specific examples in its Adventure Sync troubleshooting guide.
Adventure Sync can stop working if the game setting is off or the health-app connection is missing. Niantic also notes that refreshing game data may switch Adventure Sync off, so check the setting afterward.

If Adventure Sync is not counting your walk
Check the game and health-app connections
- Confirm Adventure Sync is still enabled under Settings > General in Pokémon GO.
- On Android, make sure Pokémon GO appears among Google Fit’s connected apps. On iOS, check that Pokémon GO is listed under Apple Health’s Sources. Pokémon Support describes these checks in its Adventure Sync progress troubleshooting article.
- Verify the requested location permission allows tracking while Pokémon GO is closed. The available permission choices differ across devices.
Allow time for activity to sync
Distance may not appear immediately. Niantic says synchronization can take up to several hours; restarting Pokémon GO may help if progress still has not appeared. Avoid treating a delayed update as proof that the walk was lost.
Review battery settings and activity source
Device battery-saving modes and battery-saving settings in Apple Health or Google Fit may interfere with tracking. Also check whether the health app recorded the walk automatically: activity manually entered in either app is excluded from Adventure Sync progress.

Check phone compatibility
The phone needs sensors capable of tracking steps and distance. Niantic notes that if Google Fit is incompatible with an Android device, Adventure Sync fitness tracking cannot be used on that device.
