Yes—but only in the limited sense that the PS5 can scale a DVD image for a 1080p or 4K television. Scaling can make the picture fit the screen and look cleaner than an untreated standard-definition signal. It cannot restore detail that was never encoded on the DVD, and Sony does not document the PS5 as having a special DVD-enhancement mode or a universally superior scaler.
The final result depends on the DVD transfer, the PS5’s output settings, your television’s processing, screen size, and viewing distance. A disc-drive PS5 is a convenient DVD player, but it is not automatically better than a modern TV or dedicated Blu-ray/DVD player.

What the PS5 actually does to a DVD
A standard DVD contains substantially less image information than a Blu-ray or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Sony describes upscaling as converting lower-resolution video so it fits a higher-resolution display, while noting that this does not increase the quality of the original signal. Upscaling changes the size and presentation of the image; it does not turn DVD material into a native HD or 4K master.
When a DVD plays on a compatible PS5 and the console is connected to a modern television, the video must be scaled somewhere in the chain before it reaches the panel. The PS5 can output video at the resolution selected for the connected display, while the TV may also perform additional scaling or image processing. Sony documents the PS5’s general output-resolution controls, but does not publish a DVD-player specification identifying a particular scaling algorithm or guaranteeing that every DVD is converted to 2160p during playback.

- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
So the precise answer is:
- Verified: Disc-drive PS5 models play supported DVDs, and PS5 consoles support high-resolution video output.
- Reasonable conclusion: A DVD signal is scaled somewhere in the PS5/HDMI/TV chain to fit a 1080p or 4K display.
- Not established: That the PS5’s DVD processing is better than a particular television, dedicated player, or older PlayStation.
A 4K output setting means the display is receiving a 4K-format signal. It does not mean the DVD contains 4K detail.
What “better” can mean
Upscaling may make a DVD appear more polished in several ways:
- Edges can look more defined after filtering or sharpening.
- Diagonal lines may show fewer obvious staircase artifacts.
- The image can fill a 1080p or 4K screen correctly instead of appearing as a small, low-resolution picture.
- Deinterlacing and other processing may make motion look cleaner on some discs and displays.
Those improvements are presentational, not a replacement for missing source detail. Faces, hair, foliage, fine text, film grain, and small textures cannot become genuinely Blu-ray-quality through scaling alone.

Processing can also hurt the image. Excessive sharpening may create bright outlines or ringing. Noise reduction can smear film grain and fine detail. Poor deinterlacing can produce jagged edges or combing during motion, while compression noise from the original DVD remains visible. A picture that looks “sharper” is not necessarily more accurate.
Will DVDs look better on a 4K TV?
Not automatically. A 4K television has to enlarge DVD video more aggressively than a 1080p set, so the weaknesses of the source can become easier to see—especially on a large screen viewed from close range.
From a normal viewing distance, a well-authored DVD may look perfectly watchable: stable, reasonably clean, and free of distracting artifacts. A poorly compressed television box set, soft master, or damaged disc may look visibly blurry, blocky, noisy, or overprocessed. The TV’s scaler can matter as much as—or more than—the PS5.

Do not confuse output format with source resolution. Sony’s PS5 4K-resolution guide explains how to configure 2160p output on a compatible display. That setting controls what the console sends over HDMI; it does not upgrade the DVD’s original image information.

There is no verified basis for promising that PS5 Pro makes DVD movies materially better through PSSR.
Sony documents PSSR as an image-reconstruction technology for compatible PS5 Pro games. The relevant PS5 setting, Enhance PSSR Image Quality, is likewise described in the video-output documentation in the context of supported games, not film playback.
PSSR is not the same thing as ordinary DVD scaling. A PS5 Pro could produce a different-looking result because of hardware, firmware, display settings, or the television’s processing, but Sony’s published material does not establish PSSR as a DVD enhancement layer. Buy a PS5 Pro for its documented gaming features—not on the assumption that it is a superior DVD upscaler.
Which PS5 models play DVDs?
You need a PS5 with an optical disc drive:
- A standard disc-drive PS5 can play supported DVDs.
- The original PS5 Digital Edition cannot play physical discs.
- Certain later Digital Edition model groups can use Sony’s separately sold disc drive, subject to model compatibility.
Supported formats include DVD-ROM, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW, with limitations for some recording modes and unfinished discs. Sony’s disc and USB media support page lists the supported formats and restrictions.
If you are buying a PS5 mainly to improve DVD quality, that is difficult to justify from the available documentation. It is more sensible as a multifunction device for someone who also wants to play games, stream content, and use Blu-ray or 4K UHD Blu-ray discs.

Best PS5 settings for DVD playback
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video.
- Select Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic first. The PS5 can detect the connected display’s capabilities and select an available output.
- On a compatible 4K television, test 2160p manually if Automatic produces an unsatisfactory result.
- Check Current Video Output Signal to see what the console and TV negotiated.
For HDR, use HDR: On When Supported as the neutral starting point. Sony says Always On converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR output. That can alter the appearance of SDR DVD content and make comparisons less reliable.
On the television, start with a normal or cinema picture mode. Set sharpness to a neutral or low value, turn motion interpolation off for film comparisons, and disable or reduce aggressive noise reduction and edge enhancement. Menu names vary by manufacturer, so there is no single universal TV setting.
Why some DVDs look much better than others
The quality of the disc often matters more than the player. Important variables include:

- Compression: Several films or an entire television season packed onto one disc may show blocking, mosquito noise, and smeared detail.
- Interlacing: Older video material may depend heavily on the quality of the player’s and TV’s deinterlacing.
- Film grain and intentional softness: These are not necessarily defects to be removed.
- Format differences: PAL, NTSC, regional releases, subtitles, menus, and animation can all affect the result.
- Disc condition and authoring: Scratches, dust, recording quality, unfinished recordable discs, and manufacturing or encoding variations can cause playback or image problems.
Sony notes that disc playback can be affected by scratches, dust, recording quality, recording-device characteristics, and manufacturing or encoding variations. A second DVD is therefore useful when judging the PS5: one poor disc does not prove that the console is poor at playback.

There is no responsible universal ranking without controlled testing. If you own another player, use this simple comparison:
- Use the same DVD in both devices, preferably one with faces, fine text, diagonal lines, dark scenes, and visible motion.
- Connect each player directly to the same television using equivalent HDMI settings.
- Use the same TV picture mode and turn motion interpolation off.
- Begin with neutral sharpness and low or disabled noise reduction.
- Compare paused close-ups and moving scenes, but judge the image from your normal seating position too.
- Repeat with a second DVD, since mastering and compression can dominate the result.
Look for stable fine detail rather than artificial crispness. Check faces, subtitles, hair, dark gradients, diagonal lines, film grain, and motion. Photos of a television screen are unreliable for judging small differences, so describe what you see rather than treating a casual camera image as a measurement.

Troubleshooting poor DVD quality
The DVD looks blurry
- Clean the disc and inspect it for scratches.
- Return PS5 Resolution to Automatic.
- If you use a 4K TV, test 2160p manually.
- Try a neutral TV picture mode.
- Reduce excessive sharpness and disable aggressive noise reduction.
- Compare the disc in another player if possible.
- Check whether a Blu-ray or 4K edition is available.
The DVD looks oversharpened
Lower the television’s sharpness, clarity, and edge-enhancement controls. Ringing around text or faces is usually processing, not newly recovered detail.
Colors or contrast look wrong
Check the PS5 HDR setting. Use On When Supported rather than Always On when assessing standard-definition DVD content.
The disc will not play
Confirm that the console has a compatible disc drive. Then check that the DVD is a supported format and, for a recordable disc, finalized. Remove dust and look for scratches or manufacturing defects. Region restrictions and variations in recording or encoding can also matter. Sony lists unfinished DVDs and other unsupported disc types on its media-support page.
PS5 versus a dedicated DVD or Blu-ray player
The PS5 is a good DVD player when convenience matters. It puts games, streaming, DVDs, Blu-rays, and—on compatible disc-drive models—4K UHD Blu-rays behind one HDMI connection. If you already own one, test its output before spending money on another device.
A dedicated player is a better fit if you mainly watch movies, want a quieter and simpler device, prefer a conventional remote, or want a product whose manufacturer explicitly advertises DVD upscaling. For example, Sony’s DVPSR510H DVD player advertises HDMI upscaling, while the BDP-S1700U Blu-ray player advertises DVD upscaling alongside Blu-ray playback. That does not prove either player will look better in your room; it simply makes the feature explicit.
Recommended Free Tools
A dedicated player will not turn a DVD into genuine HD or 4K detail either. Its advantage may be quieter operation, simpler controls, format support, or a different scaling and deinterlacing implementation.
DVD, Blu-ray, or 4K Blu-ray?
| Format | What you gain | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| DVD | Lowest-resolution physical option | Can be watchable after scaling, but source limitations remain visible |
| Blu-ray | Substantially more image detail | Usually the more dependable upgrade for a large HD or 4K screen |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Higher-resolution source and potentially HDR and wider-color benefits | Requires the appropriate player or disc-drive console and compatible display |
A poor Blu-ray transfer can still disappoint, while an excellent DVD master may look surprisingly respectable. But when the same film has a well-produced Blu-ray or 4K release, replacing the source is the only dependable way to gain real image detail. Changing the output resolution alone cannot do that.
