If the router is too far away, connect the Xbox by Ethernet to a Windows PC sharing Wi-Fi, or use a Wi-Fi bridge with an Ethernet port.
Check which Xbox 360 you have
Original Xbox 360 models often lack built-in Wi-Fi. The Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E generally include wireless networking, although their wireless hardware may be faulty or incompatible with a modern router’s security settings.

Every model can use wired networking if its Ethernet port works. You do not need the official Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter for an Ethernet connection. Microsoft’s setup documentation describes connecting the console with an Ethernet cable (Microsoft Xbox 360 setup manual).
On an S or E model, check whether Wireless Mode appears under network settings. On an original model, the absence of that option is normal. A generic USB Wi-Fi dongle is not a dependable substitute, and a USB-to-Ethernet adapter plugged directly into the Xbox 360 should not be treated as a supported solution.

Method 1: Connect directly to the router
This is the most reliable option and usually provides the simplest NAT configuration.
You need
- An Xbox 360
- A Cat5e, Cat6, or similar standard Ethernet cable
- A router or modem/router with an available LAN port
Connect the cable from the Xbox 360’s Ethernet port to a numbered LAN port on the router. Do not use the router’s Internet or WAN port. Check both cable ends and the router’s link light if the connection is not detected (Microsoft Ethernet troubleshooting guidance).
- Turn off the Xbox 360.
- Connect the Ethernet cable to the console and a numbered LAN port on the router.
- Turn on the console.
- Open My Xbox → System Settings → Network Settings → Configure Network.
- Under Basic Settings, select IP Settings → Automatic.
- Select DNS Settings → Automatic.
- Return to Network Settings and choose Test Xbox Live Connection.
With normal router DHCP, the console should receive an IP address automatically. If the test succeeds, no wireless adapter is required. A connected Ethernet cable takes precedence over wireless networking when both are available (Microsoft legacy networking guidance).

Method 2: Share a Windows PC’s Wi-Fi connection
Use this when Wi-Fi reaches a laptop or desktop but not the Xbox. The PC must have working Wi-Fi and a physical Ethernet connection. If the laptop has no Ethernet port, a USB Ethernet adapter can be connected to the computer; it is not a USB adapter for the Xbox.
Keep the PC powered on, connected to Wi-Fi, and awake while the Xbox is using its connection. Disconnect VPN software during setup because it can block local sharing.
- Connect the PC to the internet over Wi-Fi.
- Connect the Xbox 360 to the PC’s Ethernet port.
- Press Windows key + R, type
ncpa.cpl, and press Enter. - Right-click the PC’s Wi-Fi adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Sharing tab.
- Enable Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.
- In the connection list, choose the PC’s Ethernet adapter.
- Apply the settings.
- On the Xbox, leave IP and DNS set to Automatic, then run Test Xbox Live Connection.
This is Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Windows commonly assigns the shared Ethernet side a private address such as 192.168.137.1, but do not hard-code that address: the actual configuration can vary. Method 3: Bridge Wi-Fi and Ethernet in Windows
A network bridge is an alternative to ICS, but it is more sensitive to Wi-Fi drivers, VPNs, virtual switches, security software, and Windows network configuration. Try ICS first.
Disable Internet Connection Sharing before creating a bridge. Then:
- Open
ncpa.cpl. - Select both the Wi-Fi and Ethernet adapters.
- Right-click the selection and choose Bridge Connections.
- Connect the Xbox to the PC by Ethernet.
- Leave the Xbox IP and DNS settings on Automatic and test the connection.
Do not run ICS and a network bridge on the same adapters at the same time. Microsoft’s guidance discusses this conflict in this networking example.

Method 4: Use a Wi-Fi bridge, extender, or travel router
A dedicated bridge is the best choice if you do not want to leave a laptop beside the console. The device connects to Wi-Fi, while the Xbox sees an ordinary wired Ethernet connection.
Before buying or configuring one, verify that it has:

- A usable Ethernet or LAN port
- Client, bridge, repeater bridge, WISP, or equivalent mode
- Support for connecting to your router’s Wi-Fi band and security settings
Not every Wi-Fi extender can provide network access through its Ethernet port, and access-point mode alone is not enough.

- Configure the extender or travel router near a computer or phone.
- Join it to your home Wi-Fi.
- Select client, bridge, repeater, or equivalent Ethernet-output mode.
- Confirm that the bridge itself has internet access.
- Move it near the Xbox.
- Connect its LAN port to the Xbox 360 with Ethernet.
- Set the Xbox IP and DNS options to Automatic.
- Run Test Xbox Live Connection.
What usually does not work
- Generic USB Wi-Fi dongles: Xbox 360 compatibility is not universal, so do not assume a modern USB adapter will work.
- Direct USB tethering: Plugging a phone into the Xbox by USB is not a normal supported networking method.
- USB-to-Ethernet adapters plugged into the console: A USB Ethernet adapter may help a Windows PC, but it is not the standard Xbox 360 solution.
- A phone hotspot by itself: It may provide internet to a laptop, but an original Xbox 360 still needs Ethernet unless it has working built-in Wi-Fi or a compatible official adapter.
- Any extender with an Ethernet socket: The port must operate in a mode that receives Wi-Fi and outputs network access over Ethernet.
A phone can still be the internet source if it supplies Wi-Fi to a laptop running ICS, or to a compatible travel router that converts the connection to Ethernet. Mobile-data charges and carrier restrictions may apply.
Read the Xbox network test results

Do not enter random manual network values. Automatic settings are the correct starting point for a direct router connection and most ICS setups. If manual configuration is necessary, copy the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS values from a known-working device or the router.
For persistent Xbox Live NAT problems, consult Microsoft’s Xbox Live network ports reference. Port forwarding cannot fix a damaged cable, failed DHCP, an incompatible bridge, an account problem, or a game whose servers have closed.

Hotel, school, and public networks may use captive portals, client isolation, or device registration that prevents an Xbox 360 from connecting normally. Some Xbox 360 software updates added support for certain terms-of-use networks, but that does not guarantee compatibility with every current portal (Xbox Wire). A laptop or travel router can sometimes authenticate first and then provide Ethernet, but the network may still block gaming traffic.
What online features remain available?
The Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace stopped selling new games, downloadable content, and entertainment content on July 29, 2024. Previously purchased games and DLC can still be used or redownloaded under the applicable account and platform conditions. Multiplayer availability is separate and depends on whether Microsoft services and the individual game publisher’s servers still support that title (Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Store announcement).
