Red Dead Redemption 2 has several pistols, including the Volcanic, Semi-Automatic, and Mauser. The Volcanic is available earliest: it can be bought from a Gunsmith from Chapter 2, while Special and Ultimate Edition owners have a separate free pickup route after Chapter 1.
Which weapons count as pistols in RDR2?
The Volcanic Pistol, Semi-Automatic Pistol, and Mauser Pistol are named pistols in the game. Revolvers are another weapon type, even though some guides group pistols and revolvers under a broad “Pistols” heading. For weapon names and acquisition details, see RDR2.org’s weapon guide.

How do you get a pistol in Story Mode?
Volcanic Pistol
From Chapter 2 onward, the Volcanic Pistol can be purchased at a Gunsmith, according to the RDR2.org weapon guide. There is also a distinct bonus route for players with the Special or Ultimate Edition: Rockstar Support says the bonus weapons, including the Volcanic Pistol, can be picked up free at any Gunsmith after completing Chapter 1 in Story Mode. That free pickup applies to those editions, not every player. Rockstar Support’s bonus-weapon instructions were last updated September 7, 2023.
Semi-Automatic Pistol
The RDR2.org guide lists this pistol for purchase at Gunsmiths in Valentine and Saint Denis after “The Joys of Civilization” in Chapter 4.

Mauser Pistol
The same guide lists the Mauser for purchase at the Valentine and Saint Denis Gunsmiths from Chapter 5 onward, after “That’s Murfree County.”
Can you dual-wield pistols?
Yes. Once you have a second holster, you can equip a pistol in each hand. GameWith says the second holster is received during the Chapter 2 mission “Blessed are the Meek?” Its pistol guide also compares weapon stats, presenting the Volcanic as stronger in damage but slower in rate of fire than the Semi-Automatic and Mauser. Those are guide-reported in-game stat profiles, not independent tests; its bars distinguish default values from potential maximum values with customization and maxed affinity.

Which pistol should you choose?
Availability may settle the choice early: the Volcanic is available from Chapter 2, while the Semi-Automatic and Mauser require later story progress. If you are comparing performance, consider damage, rate of fire, accuracy, and reload together rather than treating a guide’s stat bars as a single overall ranking. The guide reports a damage-versus-fire-rate trade-off, but the best fit depends on which characteristics matter to you.
