Mostly true, but misleadingly phrased. Roblox requires an age check before users can access chat where chat is available. A selfie-style video is the quickest age-check method, but Roblox does not require every 9-year-old to submit one simply to play games on the platform. Families can decline the check, but the child may lose chat and other age-gated communication features.
What Roblox actually requires
The key distinction is between using Roblox and using Roblox chat.

- Playing Roblox generally: Roblox says age checks are optional overall.
- Accessing chat: An age check is required in regions where chat is available.
- Facial age estimation: This is one way to complete the check. It uses the device camera to capture selfie-style images and video.
- Age assignment: Roblox estimates an age range and places the account in an age group; it does not simply prove that a child is exactly nine.
Roblox announced the global chat requirement on January 7, 2026, applying it wherever chat was available. The company says the system is designed to place users into age-appropriate communication groups and reduce contact between children and unfamiliar adults. Roblox’s announcement describes the policy and its stated safety rationale.
What happens to a 9-year-old?
A child estimated to be between 9 and 12 is placed in Roblox’s Roblox Select age group. The relevant categories are:

Roblox says a 9–12-year-old can use age-appropriate communication and access age-rated experiences, subject to regional rules and parental settings. According to communication rules Roblox supplied to Ofcom:
- Chat with users in a similar age group and trusted friends may be available where permitted.
- Direct one-to-one experience chat is off by default for this age group.
- Voice chat is unavailable to 9–12-year-olds.
- Party chat defaults to trusted friends only.
These settings can vary by region and rollout status. A child who is exactly nine is not placed into a special “nine-year-old” category; the important boundary is the 9–12 age band. See Roblox’s explanation of age checks and account groups.
Does the child have to submit the video?
Only if the family wants access to a feature that requires an age check, such as chat, and chooses facial age estimation.

If the family refuses facial age estimation, the child can generally continue using parts of Roblox that do not require age-checked communication. The practical trade-off is that chat and related features may remain unavailable. Parents can also use Roblox’s built-in controls to keep communication turned off.
For a 9-year-old, government-ID verification is not an ordinary alternative. Roblox says ID verification is available only to users aged 13 and older. Families should never submit a parent’s ID or try to bypass the system with spoofing tools, face swaps, VPNs or unofficial verification services.
How the facial age check works
Roblox’s documented route is:
- Log in to the child’s Roblox account.
- Open Settings.
- On desktop, select the gear icon in the upper-right. On mobile, select More (…) > Settings.
- Open Account info.
- Select Age Group.
- Choose Continue with selfie.
- Follow the camera prompts.
The child, not the parent, must be in front of the camera. A parent should stay out of view while the child completes the check. Using the parent’s face can lead to an incorrect age assignment and inappropriate restrictions.

If the computer has no camera, Roblox says the process can be transferred to a mobile device with a QR code. The exact screens and parental-approval requirements may differ by country.

Roblox says its third-party provider, Persona, captures the selfie-style video and that Roblox estimates the user’s age from facial images and video. Roblox also says the images and video are deleted after processing and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from the process. Those are Roblox’s stated data-handling practices, not claims independently established by this article.
“Deleted after processing” should not be read as a guarantee that no temporary copies, processing records, vendor records or legally required records can ever exist. Parents should review the applicable Roblox and Persona privacy information for their location before consenting. Roblox also says certain personal data, including email and phone number, may be removed when a child is placed in the 5–8 or 9–12 group. How accurate is the estimate?
Roblox has cited a mean absolute error of 1.4 years for users younger than 18 in testing referenced from the UK Age Check Certification Scheme. That is an average error measurement, not a promise that every estimate will be within 1.4 years.
The practical concern is what happens near an age boundary. A child close to eight or nine could be assigned to the wrong side of the under-9 boundary, while a child close to 12 or 13 could be placed in a different communication group. The system estimates an age range rather than confirming an exact birthday, and Roblox acknowledges that errors can occur.

Settings > Parental Controls > pencil icon next to the child’s birthdate
Roblox says this parental correction is available once. Users aged 13 or older may use government-ID verification, and Roblox says it may request another check if it detects a mismatch between the assigned age and account behavior.
Do not repeatedly submit an adult’s face or another person’s identification. Use the child’s account, the child’s face for facial estimation, and Roblox’s official correction process.
What changed, and when?
- September 4, 2025: Roblox announced plans to expand age estimation for users accessing communication features.
- November 18, 2025: Roblox described its chat age checks, Persona processing and video-selfie option.
- January 7, 2026: Roblox announced that facial age checks were required for chat wherever chat was available.
- April 13, 2026: Roblox announced Roblox Kids for ages 5–8 and Roblox Select for ages 9–15, with rollout planned for early June.
- May 20, 2026: Roblox published a family guide explaining the new account categories and parental options.
Rollout details, consent requirements and communication defaults can differ by region. Families in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Indonesia and elsewhere should follow the prompt shown inside their own account rather than assume another country’s process applies.
A simple decision guide for parents

The bottom line
Roblox is not requiring every 9-year-old to upload a video selfie merely to keep playing. It is requiring an age check for chat, and facial age estimation is the fastest way for a child to complete that check. A family can allow the child to complete the scan, keep chat disabled, or decline the check and accept the loss of age-gated communication features. Whatever the choice, the parent should use the child’s own account and never put the parent’s face in the child’s scan.
