Does Starfield Set a New Standard for Action RPGs?

Starfield brings character choice, factions, exploration, ship building and outposts together in a large space RPG. Its breadth is clear; whether it sets a genre-wide standard depends on comparisons the available evidence does not establish.

Starfield sets an ambitious bar for breadth in a space RPG, bringing character customization, dialogue and choice together with faction stories, ship building and outposts. But “a new standard” is a comparative claim, not a fact established by the game’s feature list: whether it earns that label depends on how its role-playing, exploration, combat and technical performance compare with other games.

What kind of game is Starfield?

Starfield is a role-playing game from Bethesda Game Studios, published by Bethesda Softworks. Set in 2330, it follows a player who joins Constellation, a group of space explorers searching for artifacts. Xbox describes it as a return to the studio’s RPG roots, emphasizing “meaningful customization, dialogue, and choice.” That is Xbox’s promotional description, rather than an independent verdict on how much agency the game delivers.

Bethesda’s materials present a broad set of activities: exploring cities, joining factions, building ships and establishing outposts. These systems give the game several routes into its spacefaring setting, but their presence alone does not show that every planet, quest or activity has the same depth or quality.

Where Starfield raises the bar—and where the claim needs proof

The strongest case for Starfield as a standard-setter is its feature-led scope. Character creation, dialogue, faction involvement, exploration, ships and outposts combine in one role-playing framework. Bethesda’s gameplay materials support that feature list; they do not establish that the game outperforms its peers.

A fair comparison needs named games and consistent criteria. On role-playing agency, for example, the question is not simply whether dialogue choices exist, but how character builds and decisions shape events. Exploration should be judged by authored locations, traversal and the flow of discovery. Combat calls for attention to gunplay, enemy variety and the place of ship battles. Systems depth includes ship construction, crew, crafting and outposts. Technical delivery must be assessed on a specified platform and version, rather than generalized across all releases.

The available official descriptions do not provide comparable results across those areas, and the cited reporting does not supply an independently measured genre-wide comparison. So the defensible conclusion is narrower: Starfield has a broad set of RPG and space-exploration systems, while the claim that it sets the genre’s standard remains an opinion that needs game-to-game evidence.

How the game’s reach is documented

In July 2026, GamesRadar reported Bethesda figures of more than 17 million players and almost a billion hours played to date. These are attributed figures reported by a news outlet, not an independently audited dataset. They indicate substantial reported engagement, but they do not prove that the game is better than other RPGs or that its design has changed genre expectations.
