No. Steam does not completely shut down every Tuesday. Valve commonly carries out brief scheduled maintenance around Tuesday, but the interruption is usually limited to some services and often lasts about 15–30 minutes. Valve says planned downtime generally takes about an hour or less, while the exact timing and impact can vary.
A Tuesday connection problem is therefore consistent with routine maintenance—but it is not proof that maintenance is responsible.

Why Steam can seem “down” without shutting down completely
Steam is made up of several services that can fail independently, including the Store, login and authentication, Community pages, profiles, downloads, Cloud synchronization, the Web API, Steamworks services, regional connection managers, and game coordinators.

Routine maintenance can involve security patches, operating-system or driver updates, hardware installation, or server-side code changes that do not produce a visible new feature. Valve says it schedules planned work around Pacific Time business hours and attempts to avoid peak usage, but it does not publish a guaranteed universal Tuesday shutdown time.

Does maintenance happen every Tuesday?
Tuesday is the customary weekly maintenance day reported by Steam-related monitoring and support pages, but it is not a promise that every Tuesday will produce a noticeable outage. Maintenance may be brief, staggered, regional, delayed, moved to another day, or invisible to a particular user.

Steam can also suffer an unrelated outage on a Tuesday. The calendar is a useful clue, not a diagnosis.
What time does Tuesday maintenance happen?
Reported estimates usually place routine maintenance in the afternoon or early evening in U.S. Pacific Time. Other monitoring pages describe a similar general period as around 7 p.m. Eastern Time or 11 p.m. UTC, but these are estimates rather than Valve’s fixed timetable. The window can shift because of daylight-saving changes, major releases, sales, or operational requirements.
Depending on your location, a U.S. Tuesday maintenance window may occur late at night or on Wednesday locally. Valve’s official guidance supports variable scheduling, so do not rely on an exact weekly time.

How long does it last?
Ordinary maintenance is often reported as lasting roughly 15–30 minutes. Valve says planned downtime generally does not exceed about one hour. A longer interruption may indicate extended work, a failed maintenance change, or an unrelated outage.
If the problem continues well beyond the expected window, stop assuming it is routine maintenance and check for a broader incident or a local connection problem.
What may stop working?
- Steam Store pages and purchases
- Login or authentication
- Friends, chat, profiles, and Community pages
- Cloud synchronization
- Downloads and updates
- Steam matchmaking and game coordinators
- Online multiplayer features
- Games that require a live license or authentication check
These services do not necessarily fail together. You may be able to browse the Store while matchmaking is unavailable, or launch a game while Cloud synchronization is delayed.

Can you play games during maintenance?
Often, yes. Installed single-player games that do not require online authentication may continue to work. Games using independent servers may also remain online even when a Steam feature is unavailable.
For a supported installed game, you can try Steam menu → Go Offline. This is not universal: online multiplayer, live authentication, Steam-dependent matchmaking, cloud saves, newly purchased games, uninstalled games, and some first launches may still fail. Avoid restarting Steam unnecessarily if you are already playing offline; doing so can trigger a new login or license check.
Steam Deck owners face the same basic distinction. An installed offline-capable game may work, while online features and Steam services can still be unavailable.

How to tell maintenance from an outage or local problem
- Check the scope. If only one game fails, check that game’s official server status or support page. If the Store, Community, login, and several games fail together, a Steam-side issue is more likely.
- Check other websites. If the wider internet is failing, suspect your router, ISP, or local network rather than Steam.
- Check Steam’s official guidance. Valve recommends checking Steam Server Status when investigating possible system-wide downtime. Start with its Steam connectivity troubleshooting page.
- Check component-level status. A service monitor such as SteamDB’s Steam status page can help show whether Store, Community, Client, Web API, or game-coordinator services are affected.
- Compare the client and browser. If the browser Store works but the Steam client does not, investigate the client, firewall, or local network.
- Test another network. A phone hotspot can distinguish a home-network or ISP problem from a wider Steam incident.
- Wait briefly and retry. Tuesday maintenance often resolves within minutes. If the issue persists for more than about an hour, investigate it as a possible outage or separate problem.
What does “Steam servers are currently unavailable or too busy” mean?
That message does not prove Tuesday maintenance is happening. It can result from scheduled maintenance, an unscheduled Steam outage, regional server trouble, login problems, traffic spikes during a sale or launch, or interference from your network, firewall, or ISP.
Valve’s support guidance for unavailable or busy servers should be read alongside its broader connectivity troubleshooting.
Targeted fixes worth trying
Restart Steam completely only after checking whether you might lose an existing offline session. Check your router and firewall, and close software that may interfere with Steam traffic. If the Store and login work but downloads are the only problem, try Steam → Settings → Downloads → Download Region and select another region. Changing the download region will not fix a login, Community, matchmaking, or game-server outage.
If only one game is affected, consult that game’s support channel. A title can be unavailable because its own developer is performing maintenance even when Steam itself is operating normally. Conversely, a Steam platform interruption can affect one game more severely than another because their Steamworks and server dependencies differ.

Bottom line
Steam does not fully shut down every Tuesday. Tuesday is a common maintenance day, and a short interruption—often around 15–30 minutes—is normal, but there is no guaranteed fixed global schedule. Some services may fail while others continue working, and installed offline-capable games may remain playable.
Treat Tuesday as a timing clue, not an automatic explanation. Check how many Steam services are affected, whether other websites work, whether the problem is limited to one game, and whether it clears within about an hour.
