Nintendo’s online-service shutdown stopped features that rely on online communication, including receiving new Puzzle Swap panels. So Mii Plaza still works in some ways, but not every feature is available.
What still works in Mii Plaza?
Nintendo says StreetPass uses local communication between Nintendo 3DS family systems, so it remained available after online services ended. Nintendo specifically confirms that you can still use StreetPass in StreetPass Mii Plaza, which comes pre-installed on 3DS family systems. In practice, a StreetPass exchange requires nearby compatible systems; Nintendo’s statement does not mean the feature works over the internet.

For the official explanation, see Nintendo’s announcement on the discontinuation of online services for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software.
What no longer works?
Features that depend on online communication are no longer available. Nintendo gives receiving new panels in Puzzle Swap as an example. The company does not provide an inventory of every Mii Plaza mode or add-on in its notice, so it is safest to distinguish confirmed local StreetPass functionality from online-dependent features rather than assume every Plaza activity works.

Did the 3DS online shutdown close the eShop too?
No. Nintendo ended purchases through the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops on March 27, 2023. That was separate from the later online-service shutdown, which Nintendo says took effect on April 8, 2024, at 4 p.m. Pacific Time for online play and other online-communication functions in 3DS and Wii U software.
Nintendo said redownloading previously purchased software and DLC would remain possible for the foreseeable future. That wording is not a permanent guarantee. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop discontinuation Q&A also addresses Mii Plaza paid content and passes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Mii Plaza the same as Miiverse?
No. Mii Plaza is the pre-installed 3DS application that includes StreetPass features. Miiverse was a separate Nintendo service. Nintendo ended Miiverse on November 7, 2017, at 10 p.m. Pacific Time; its discontinuation does not change the fact that local StreetPass exchanges remain available. See Nintendo’s Miiverse Service Discontinuation FAQ.
