How cross-play works
Steam and Xbox players can join the same online game
The Steam store lists Cross-Platform Multiplayer, and Xbox Wire’s May 4, 2026 announcement describes cross-platform play as a feature of the multiplayer launch. In practical terms, a person playing on Steam or another supported PC build can play with a friend on Xbox through the game’s online multiplayer system.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnknown Worlds programmer Sam Dark described the intended flow this way: “You can play with your Xbox friends, as well as your friends on other platforms, as easily as opening the menu and inviting them to your game.” The important point is that the invitation is handled from inside the game rather than requiring both players to use the same hardware platform.

Cross-play is online co-op, not local split-screen
The published feature information describes online multiplayer. It does not establish local split-screen or same-device co-op, so do not assume that two people can share one console or PC display. Each participant should plan to use a supported platform and their own online session.
The group limit is four players
Steam describes the game as a single-player experience that can optionally be played with up to three friends. That gives a maximum party size of four people, including the host. A larger server or an open-ended MMO-style world is not part of the stated co-op model.
What is not established about cross-play
The current platform information confirms cross-platform multiplayer, but it does not document cross-progression, shared saves between platforms, account-transfer rules, or whether every future platform release will join the same network. Those are separate features from cross-play. If you are changing platforms, check the current in-game and store information before assuming that your character or world will follow you.

Using a controller
Full gamepad support includes Xbox controllers
The official Subnautica 2 Help Center, updated April 16, 2026, states: “Yes, Subnautica 2 offers full controller (gamepad) support, including Xbox controllers.” That makes an Xbox Wireless Controller a straightforward choice for PC players who prefer analog sticks and triggers to a mouse and keyboard.
Xbox Wire also says the development team spent substantial time making the Xbox controller the best experience and calls it “one of the primary input methods.” On Xbox hardware, gamepad use is therefore the native control approach; on a Windows PC, an Xbox controller is an explicitly supported option.
What “full controller support” tells you
Full controller support indicates that the game is designed to be playable with a gamepad rather than requiring a mouse and keyboard for basic play. The published statements do not provide a complete button map, information about remapping every action, or details about vibration, adaptive triggers and other platform-specific effects. Those settings may be exposed in the current build, but they are not guaranteed by the available compatibility statements.

Handheld controller input is a stated priority
The Help Center says controller input is optimized for Steam Deck and the ROG Ally series. This is stronger than simply saying that a controller happens to connect: the developer is identifying handheld gamepad use as a supported target. It still does not promise identical battery life, frame rate or visual settings on every handheld.
Steam Deck compatibility
Steam currently lists the game as Verified
Steam’s current store metadata marks Subnautica 2 Steam Deck Verified. Combined with the developer’s statement that Deck controller input is optimized, this is a strong signal that the game is intended to work with the handheld’s built-in controls and software environment.
Verified is a current store classification, not a lifetime guarantee. Because the game remains in Early Access, a later patch can alter loading behavior, controls, graphics performance or the verification status. Before installing or troubleshooting, check the live Steam listing and the latest developer updates rather than relying on an old screenshot or forum post.
What the Deck status does not promise
No published performance target is supplied for frame rate, resolution, battery duration or graphics presets. The Verified label should not be read as a guarantee of a particular number of frames per second or a fixed battery runtime. Those results can also vary between game versions and user settings.
Can a Deck player join friends on Xbox?
Steam Deck runs the Steam version, so a Deck player is participating as a Steam player. Since the game advertises cross-platform multiplayer and Xbox Wire specifically describes play with Xbox friends, the supported model is that a Deck user can join an Xbox friend through the same cross-platform multiplayer feature, subject to the current build and service availability.

Launch platforms and dates
Xbox Wire announced an Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC Game Preview launch for May 14, 2026, with availability through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Steam lists May 14, 2026 as the Early Access release date. These labels describe unfinished, actively developed versions rather than a final 1.0 release.

Early Access and Game Preview affect how you should interpret every compatibility answer in this guide. The multiplayer model and controller support are documented now, but menus, matchmaking behavior, optimization and platform verification can be revised without the game being considered a finished product.
Why build differences matter
Steam, Windows PC through Xbox and Xbox Series X|S can receive platform-specific updates or use different storefront systems. Cross-play means the services are designed to connect those players; it does not mean that every patch arrives at exactly the same moment. If an invitation fails immediately after an update, confirm that everyone is running the current version and consult the latest patch information before treating it as a permanent compatibility problem.

| Setup | Multiplayer position | Controller position | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam on Windows PC | Can use the advertised cross-platform multiplayer feature | Full gamepad support, including Xbox controllers | Steam version is Early Access. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Can play with friends on other supported platforms | Xbox controller is a primary input method | Xbox version is Game Preview. |
| Steam Deck | Uses the Steam player side of cross-platform multiplayer | Controller input is optimized for Deck | Steam currently labels the game Verified; future updates can change that status. |
| ROG Ally series | Uses the supported PC multiplayer path | Controller input is identified as optimized | The available statements do not provide a separate performance rating. |
Practical setup checklist
If you are on Steam and your friend is on Xbox
- Confirm that both of you are using the current version of Subnautica 2 for your platform.
- Launch the game and enter the multiplayer flow.
- Open the in-game menu and use the invitation function described by Unknown Worlds.
- Have your friend accept the invitation on Xbox and verify that both players appear in the same online session.
- Remember the party limit: the host plus up to three friends.
The published material does not specify a separate cross-play toggle, account-linking procedure or platform-specific friend-code system. If your menus differ after an update, use the labels shown by your current build rather than following an older walkthrough.
If you want to play with an Xbox controller on PC
- Connect your Xbox controller to the PC using your preferred supported connection.
- Start Subnautica 2 and check that the game displays gamepad prompts or responds to the controller.
- Use the game’s current control settings if you need to adjust sensitivity or bindings; the official statement confirms gamepad support but does not publish a universal button layout.
- If the game still shows keyboard prompts, reconnect the controller, restart the game and check for a pending game update before assuming that controllers are unsupported.
If you are playing on Steam Deck
- Install the Steam build and check the current store page for its live Deck compatibility label.
- Launch with the Deck’s built-in controls, which are within the controller-input target identified by the developer.
- For multiplayer, invite or join friends through the same in-game flow used by other Steam players.
- If an update changes performance or controls, check the latest patch notes and Steam metadata; Early Access status means the experience can evolve.
Troubleshooting cross-play and controller problems
An invitation does not appear
- Check that both players are in the game’s online multiplayer flow rather than a local or offline menu.
- Verify that both installations are updated. A newly released patch can temporarily leave players on different builds.
- Confirm that the intended host has not already reached the four-player limit.
- Restart the game on both platforms and try the invitation again.
- Look at current developer announcements or patch notes for service interruptions or changed menu labels.
The controller is connected but does not control the game
- Reconnect the controller before launching the game, then test it in the title’s control settings.
- On PC, close other software that may be remapping or claiming the controller and relaunch the game.
- On Steam Deck, return to the default control layout before experimenting with custom mappings.
- Install pending game and system updates. Controller behavior can change during Early Access.
Steam Deck performance changes after an update
Do not infer that a single patch has permanently invalidated Deck support. Steam’s Verified designation is current metadata, while the developer’s optimization statement concerns controller input. Recheck the store status, update notes and your graphics settings after each major build change. If the title is temporarily less stable, report the issue through the developer’s current support channels and include the game version and handheld model.
Bottom line for each player type
Choose Steam if your friends use Xbox or PC
Steam provides the advertised cross-platform multiplayer route, full gamepad support and the option to play on Steam Deck. It is the most flexible choice for someone who wants both desktop and handheld access, with the normal Early Access caveat.
Choose Xbox if you want the console-first controller experience
Xbox Series X|S uses the controller approach the developers describe as a primary input method and can connect to friends on other supported platforms. The Xbox build is Game Preview, so it is also subject to ongoing changes.
Choose Steam Deck for portable co-op
The current Verified label and the developer’s explicit Deck controller optimization make Steam Deck a supported portable option. Check the live Steam listing after updates, because neither verification nor performance details are guaranteed to remain unchanged during development.
