During the broadcast, acknowledge useful requests, group repeats, explain what is out of scope, and tighten chat controls when volume or abuse makes that workflow unreliable.
The goal is not to approve every suggestion. It is to keep ideas visible enough to guide the stream while protecting the chat from spam, harassment, unsafe requests, and misunderstandings about what you can actually do.

What effective suggestion moderation looks like
A workable system answers four questions for viewers and moderators:

- Where should a suggestion go? Use the platform chat, a pinned prompt, or a platform feature that creates a queue when one is available.
- What happens when chat gets busy? Tell viewers whether slow mode, restricted modes, comment filters, or message review are active.
- What happens when someone ignores the rules? State when a message may be removed and when a user may be muted, timed out, blocked, or escalated to another moderator.
These expectations are an editorial workflow rather than a single platform-mandated policy. The controls and permission levels differ between services, so adapt the wording to the interface you are using.

Prepare the rules and team before going live
Define the suggestion boundary
Write a short rule that distinguishes useful ideas from demands that derail the broadcast. For a game stream, you might accept requests for the next character to try, accessibility adjustments, strategy questions, or technical fixes. You might decline requests that require content outside the announced game, disclose private information, or pressure you to break your own safety rules.
Keep the rule concrete enough that a moderator can apply it consistently. Include the kinds of behavior that lead to removal or a timeout, such as repeated spam, harassment, or attempts to evade a moderator action. Avoid promising that every accepted idea will be used; acceptance means the suggestion can be considered, not that it will happen immediately.
Choose one submission route
Tell viewers exactly how to phrase an idea and where to put it. A single chat prefix, a pinned prompt, or a platform queue is easier to review than several competing channels. If the stream supports a queue, explain whether it is for suggestions, paid requests, rewards, or another purpose. Twitch’s documentation lists a Rewards Request Queue in Mod View, but it does not establish that queue as a general-purpose suggestion inbox.
Assign moderators and an escalation owner
Name the people who can remove messages or restrict users, then agree on who handles borderline cases. A moderator should know when to make an immediate safety decision and when to pause for the channel owner’s judgment. TikTok describes community moderators who can mute or block users, filter comments, and pin comments; other platforms use different roles and permissions. Confirm each person’s access before the event rather than discovering a missing permission during a surge.
Configure filters before the first message
Prepare blocked words or phrases, link review, automatic message holding, and the chat-speed controls your platform provides. Start with settings that protect the conversation without hiding ordinary game discussion. Record what you changed so you can restore the normal configuration after the stream.
Pre-stream checklist
- Publish the accepted suggestion categories and the prohibited behavior.
- Show the submission format in the stream description, title card, or chat prompt.
- Assign moderators and identify the person who makes final decisions on borderline cases.
- Test that moderators can use the relevant mute, block, filter, and message-review controls.
- Choose initial automation and chat-speed settings appropriate for the expected audience.
- Prepare a short explanation for viewers if a filter or slow mode is enabled.
Set expectations at the start of the broadcast
Pin or repeat the current prompt if your platform supports it. A useful prompt says what you are deciding now, how to submit an idea, and whether there is a limit on repeats. For example: Suggest one character for the next match; include the reason in one sentence. Repeated posts, personal attacks, and unrelated links will be removed.

Explain any friction that viewers will notice. If slow mode limits how often someone can post, say so. If potentially inappropriate messages are being held for review, tell viewers that a delay does not necessarily mean the suggestion was rejected. This small explanation prevents people from reposting the same idea repeatedly and creating more noise.
Repeat the prompt after a major segment, game change, or settings change. Do not leave a stale request pinned when the stream has moved to a different decision.
Process suggestions during normal chat
Use a quick triage loop
- Read for relevance and safety. Decide whether the message fits the announced scope and whether it creates a harassment, spam, or safety problem.
- Acknowledge useful ideas. A brief response such as “adding that to the next-round list” tells the sender that the message was seen without promising a result.
- Group duplicates. Treat repeated versions of the same idea as one request and say when the list is already full.
- Explain an out-of-scope decision once. State the boundary and point back to the current prompt rather than debating every variation.
- Apply the stated action. Remove or restrict messages that violate the rule, and escalate a borderline case to the designated decision-maker.
Keep the queue understandable
Use a consistent internal label or short note for each accepted idea: the request, the relevant segment, and its status. If your platform has no queue, a moderator can maintain a simple running list outside the public chat. Do not expose private information while organizing requests.
Do not reward repetition
Answering the same demand every few seconds encourages more duplicates. A single acknowledgement, followed by a reminder that repeats are merged, keeps attention on new ideas. If a viewer believes an innocent suggestion was caught by a filter, invite a shorter or rephrased version instead of asking them to repost it many times.
Use automation as a filter, not as the final judge
Automated controls reduce the number of messages a human must inspect, but they can also catch legitimate discussion. Your rules should include a path for a viewer to rephrase a harmless suggestion and, where your process allows it, request a review.
YouTube Live
YouTube can automatically hold potentially inappropriate live messages at Basic or Strict levels. A channel owner or managing moderator must change the automatic moderation settings, and held messages remain hidden when no action is taken. That means a viewer may interpret silence as being ignored unless you explain that messages can be waiting for review. Details are in YouTube’s live chat moderation guidance.

Twitch
Twitch AutoMod holds potentially risky messages for a moderator to approve or reject. Twitch also documents blocked words and phrases and link review. Keep a human in the loop for borderline game terms, slang, or legitimate criticism that resembles a blocked phrase. See Twitch’s moderation setup guide.
Explain false positives
When a suggestion is safe but withheld, tell the viewer what kind of wording is more likely to pass. Do not publish a list of filter-avoidance tricks that could help abusive users. A simple request to remove a link, shorten the message, or describe the gameplay issue without an insult is usually enough.
Scale controls when chat volume spikes
Change settings in response to observable conditions, not just a fixed schedule. The comparison below shows the decision to make at each stage.

Twitch documents slow mode, restricted modes, and a short non-moderator chat delay. Its help page says, “A good setting for allowing moderation without a noticeable impact on the viewer experience is 2 seconds.” Treat that as Twitch’s guidance, not a universal optimum for every stream or audience. YouTube also documents slow mode, which limits how often each viewer can post. Review the current platform controls before the event because labels and permissions can change.
Platform-specific moderation options
Twitch
Use the channel’s moderation settings to combine AutoMod, blocked words and phrases, link review, slow or restricted chat, and a non-moderator delay. The delay can create a small window for intervention, while slow mode reduces the number of messages arriving at once. Keep the settings proportional to the problem: a short delay or temporary slow mode may be enough for a burst, whereas sustained harassment may require restricted chat and direct user action.
Mod View provides a customizable workspace for moderation tasks. Its documentation includes a Rewards Request Queue, so use that feature only when its defined purpose matches your stream’s request flow. Do not tell viewers that it is a universal suggestion inbox. See Twitch Mod View documentation.

YouTube Live
Configure the blocked-words list, automatic holding level, and slow mode in YouTube’s live chat moderation controls. Only the channel owner or a managing moderator can change automatic moderation settings. During a surge, have a moderator inspect held messages while another person handles visible harassment or spam. When the chat settles, review messages that were hidden without action so an innocent suggestion is not lost simply because the stream moved on.
TikTok LIVE
TikTok’s safety guidance describes community moderators who can mute or block users, filter comments, and pin comments. The TikTok LIVE Studio moderator help article, updated March 3, 2025, documents assigning moderators and using mute or block controls. Because LIVE interfaces and permissions can change, verify the current controls in your account before publishing a detailed promise to viewers. Use TikTok’s LIVE safety guide and TikTok LIVE Studio’s moderator help as the reference points.
Make suggestions concise and actionable
A prompt that asks for a decision-ready format reduces moderator workload. Request the proposed action, the reason, and any constraint that matters. For example, ask for “one build, one reason, and the mode you want it tested in” rather than an unrestricted paragraph.
- One idea per message: Moderators can merge and count requests without guessing which parts belong together.
- Use the current vocabulary: Ask for the game mode, character, map, or feature name used on stream.
- State constraints: Include time limits, accessibility needs, spoiler boundaries, or whether the request is for the next segment.
- Remove unnecessary links: A link-review filter can hold a useful message, and many suggestions do not need an external URL.
- Respect the decision: A suggestion is input, not a command. Repeated pressure after a decision becomes a moderation issue.
If the platform offers a pinned comment, use it for the active prompt rather than a long rulebook. Put the full rules somewhere viewers can reach without interrupting the live conversation.

Use the least disruptive action that protects the stream, then increase the response if the behavior continues. A moderator can remove the message and explain the relevant rule when the problem is minor. Repeated spam or harassment warrants a timeout, mute, or equivalent restriction. Blocking is appropriate when a user continues after restrictions or creates a serious safety problem. Follow the platform’s available controls and your channel’s rules rather than improvising a public argument.
Prioritize harassment, spam, and safety issues over routine suggestions during a surge. If a borderline message could be harmless, hold it for review instead of making a rushed public accusation. Keep a private note of the decision and the reason so the team applies the same standard to the next message.

Do not ask viewers to investigate or confront a suspected abuser. Moderators should act through the platform’s controls and escalate internally to the person who owns the channel.
Restore and improve the system after the stream
- Return temporary controls to normal. Disable a surge-only slow mode, restricted mode, or unusually strict filter when chat is manageable again.
- Review mistaken removals. Look at held or deleted messages and identify legitimate words, names, or abbreviations that should not be blocked next time.
- Check unresolved suggestions. Mark ideas that were accepted, deferred, declined, or never reviewed so viewers do not assume every unmentioned request was approved.
- Update the prompt. If many people misunderstood the scope, rewrite the example or move the active request to a more visible location.
- Debrief moderators. Record which events triggered escalation, which decisions were disputed, and who should handle similar cases in the next broadcast.
This review turns one busy stream into clearer rules for the next one without promising a particular acceptance rate or moderator-to-viewer ratio.
A simple operating script for moderators
Keep a short script available so every moderator communicates the same way:

- Duplicate: “We have this request already, so further repeats will be merged.”
- Out of scope: “We are taking suggestions for the current game segment only.”
- Held or filtered: “If your idea was harmless, rephrase it without links or insults and send it once.”
- Rule violation: “This message was removed for breaking the chat rule. Continued repeats may lead to a restriction.”
Use the wording as a guide, not a substitute for judgment. A moderator should never promise that the creator will use an idea, reveal private enforcement details, or debate a user while the stream is under pressure.
Choosing the right balance
Use ordinary chat when suggestions remain readable and moderators can respond promptly. Add slow mode when repetition, rather than danger, is the main problem. Use stronger filtering, restricted modes, and held-message review when spam or harassment overwhelms normal triage. Keep a human decision for messages that automation cannot classify confidently, and make the rephrasing path visible so legitimate viewers are not left guessing.
The best setup is therefore a process: clear scope before the stream, a visible prompt at the start, consistent triage during normal chat, temporary friction during surges, and a post-stream review that corrects mistaken removals. Platform tools support that process, but they do not replace a moderator who understands the stream’s boundaries.
