Does the FPGA Game Boy Advance SP Support Original Cartridges and Accessories?

By VGSources Team 8 min read

Short answer: the FPGA SP (also called FPGBA SP) prototype has been shown running an original Game Boy Advance cartridge, and its creator, Taki Udon of RetroRemake, has been reported saying that real cartridges work. That is a qualified yes for GBA cartridge play.

Support for original accessories is not established. There is no published confirmation that the prototype accepts a Nintendo GBA Link Cable, Wireless Adapter, or other accessories. The project is still a prototype rather than a shipping product, so the cartridge demonstration should not be treated as a guarantee for every cartridge or accessory.

What the FPGA SP is—and what it is not

The name in this question refers to the FPGA SP, also described as the FPGBA SP: a clamshell handheld prototype associated with RetroRemake founder Taki Udon. It is not Nintendo’s original Game Boy Advance SP, an Analogue Pocket, or a conventional emulator handheld that merely copies the SP’s folding shape.

In an FPGA handheld, programmable logic is used to reproduce the behavior of console hardware rather than simply running a software emulator. That distinction matters for cartridge support because a physical cartridge needs an appropriate cartridge slot, electrical interface, timing behavior, save handling, and software implementation. A shell that resembles an SP does not, by itself, tell you whether any of those things exist.

The available reporting is from October 12, 2026. It describes a prototype running a Pokémon Game Boy Advance title from a physical cartridge. The same report mentions USB-C output and the ability to run games from an SD card. It does not provide a retail specification, a complete port diagram, or a release date.

Does it play original GBA cartridges?

Yes, in the limited sense supported by the demonstration. The prototype has been shown running a real GBA cartridge, and reporting attributes a statement to Udon that it plays real cartridges natively. That is stronger evidence than a promise based only on a product render or a menu screenshot: a physical game was shown operating in the prototype.

Udon’s reported statement was:

“My passion project got upgraded. We’ve been making a lot of progress on FPGBA SP. Yes, it plays real cartridges, and yes, I am considering a regular FPGBA version. I’m still trying to make this work for around $100.”

The quotation establishes the creator’s intended cartridge feature and an approximate price target. It does not establish that the design is finished, that every commercial cartridge has been tested, or that a final retail unit will behave identically to the demonstration hardware.

What the demonstration proves

  • A physical Game Boy Advance cartridge can be inserted into the prototype and used to launch a game.
  • Cartridge play is a stated design goal, not merely an assumption based on the device’s appearance.
  • The project is being developed as an FPGA-based SP-style system rather than as a cartridge-free software device.

What it does not prove

  • Compatibility with every first-party GBA cartridge revision.
  • Compatibility with flash cartridges, reproduction cartridges, or cartridges containing unusual save or enhancement hardware.
  • Long-term reliability, save-data behavior, boot-time behavior, or performance across a complete cartridge library.
  • That the same feature will be present in a future production model.

No independent compatibility matrix, tested sample size, or testing methodology has been published in the reporting available for this prototype. The most accurate buying-language answer is therefore: the FPGA SP has demonstrated real GBA cartridge play, but universal compatibility remains unproven.

Which cartridges should owners assume will work?

Until RetroRemake publishes a compatibility list, treat the demonstration as proof of capability rather than a blanket guarantee. A standard retail GBA Game Pak is the closest match to what was shown. A buyer should still distinguish between “a cartridge works” and “my particular cartridge is supported.”

Cartridges can differ in their save technology, board revision, and additional hardware. Those differences can matter to FPGA implementations, especially when a game uses nonstandard memory behavior. The available report does not say how many cartridges were tested or whether any special cases were included.

For a collection owner, the practical rule is to wait for one of three kinds of confirmation before assuming broad support:

  1. A maker-published list naming tested cartridges or cartridge families.
  2. Demonstrations covering multiple regions, revisions, and save types rather than one game.
  3. Reports from independent owners showing that saves can be written, retained, and restored after power-off.

None of those broader data sets is available yet. Do not interpret the single demonstrated Pokémon cartridge as a compatibility percentage.

Are original GBA accessories supported?

That remains unresolved. No device-specific accessory list has been published for the FPGA SP in the available reporting. The prototype’s reported USB-C output and SD-card game support are useful features, but neither one proves that Nintendo accessories can be connected or that their protocols are implemented.

Nintendo’s accessory documentation describes how accessories work with original hardware. It says the GBA Link Cable works with the original Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP, and with GBA Game Paks that support multiplayer. The number of players, cables, and game copies depends on the individual game. Nintendo also describes a Wireless Adapter that plugs into an original GBA or GBA SP and enables multiplayer in games that support that adapter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those instructions establish compatibility with Nintendo’s original consoles. They do not establish compatibility with the FPGA SP. The prototype would need the appropriate physical connection, electrical signaling, protocol implementation, and game-level behavior for an accessory to work. None of those requirements has been confirmed for this project.

GBA Link Cable

There is no published confirmation that the FPGA SP has a working GBA link port or that its USB-C connector can substitute for one. A USB-C port may provide video output, charging, data, or other functions; its presence should not be read as evidence that a Nintendo link cable can be plugged in directly or used through an adapter.

Until the maker identifies a compatible port and demonstrates multiplayer or data transfer, describe Link Cable support as not established. The fact that a Link Cable works on the original Nintendo SP does not transfer automatically to a new FPGA design.

Nintendo Wireless Adapter

The same caution applies to the Wireless Adapter. Nintendo documents it for the original GBA and GBA SP and for games that support the adapter. No available report identifies a wireless-adapter connector, wireless protocol support, or a successful multiplayer test on the FPGA SP. Its compatibility is therefore also not established.

Other accessories

There is no device-specific evidence for specialty accessories, multiplayer peripherals, or other original GBA attachments. Avoid assuming that an accessory works because it fits physically, because it works on Nintendo’s hardware, or because another FPGA handheld supports a similar cable.

Why another FPGA handheld is not a compatibility precedent

Analogue’s Pocket documentation provides a useful example of why accessory claims must be tied to a particular device. Analogue lists a Pocket-to-Pocket Link Cable that connects Pocket devices with Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance systems, with compatibility for original Game Boy systems except the first-generation Game Boy. That is a specification for Analogue’s Pocket cable and hardware, not for the FPGA SP.

Analogue’s 2024 Pocket firmware notes also document fixes affecting some GBA game revisions and save-data backup on cartridges with special hardware. Those notes illustrate that FPGA handheld behavior can depend on implementation and firmware. They do not demonstrate that the FPGA SP has the same fixes, cartridge support, or accessory behavior.

Prototype status, price, and availability

The FPGA SP is not reported as a retail product with an announced release window. Udon described it as a passion project and said he was trying to make it work for “around $100.” That figure is an aspirational target from October 12, 2026, not a confirmed retail price, preorder price, or recurring subscription cost.

Because there is no shipping product specification, a buyer cannot yet verify the final cartridge slot, accessory ports, firmware policy, warranty, regional availability, or update process. Do not treat a prototype video as an invitation to buy a finished console, and be wary of listings that present the project as currently available without a manufacturer announcement.

How to evaluate the device if it reaches retail

When a production announcement appears, check these points before purchasing:

  1. Cartridge scope: confirm that the manufacturer names original GBA Game Paks as supported and states whether flash cartridges, reproduction carts, and special-hardware games are included or excluded.
  2. Save behavior: look for documentation or demonstrations showing that saves are written to the cartridge and survive shutdown, not just that a game reaches its title screen.
  3. Physical connections: identify a dedicated link port or an explicitly documented adapter. Do not infer accessory support from USB-C alone.
  4. Multiplayer evidence: look for a demonstrated Link Cable or Wireless Adapter session with a game that supports the relevant accessory.
  5. Firmware support: check whether cartridge and accessory fixes can be delivered through firmware updates and whether updates are user-installable.
  6. Commercial terms: verify the actual price, release date, region, warranty, and return policy rather than relying on the prototype’s approximate target.

Original Nintendo SP versus the FPGA prototype

The comparison below separates documented original-hardware behavior from what has actually been shown for the prototype.

Question Original Nintendo GBA SP FPGA SP prototype
Physical GBA cartridges Designed for original GBA Game Paks Demonstrated with a real GBA cartridge; broad library coverage not published
GBA Link Cable Nintendo documents support, subject to the game’s multiplayer requirements Not established
Nintendo Wireless Adapter Nintendo documents support for compatible games Not established

Price Depends on the used-market listing “Around $100” was described as a creator target, not a confirmed price

What owners should and should not assume

Reasonable assumption

If the eventual hardware remains faithful to the demonstrated design, a standard original GBA cartridge is the feature most clearly supported by current evidence. The cartridge demonstration and Udon’s statement directly address that question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unsafe assumption

Do not assume that a GBA Link Cable, Wireless Adapter, or specialty accessory will work. Do not assume every cartridge revision will work. Do not assume that SD-card loading and USB-C output indicate Nintendo accessory compatibility, and do not assume the prototype’s target price or features are final.

Bottom line for cartridge collectors and multiplayer players

For playing real GBA games, the answer is a qualified yes: the FPGA SP prototype has already been shown running an original cartridge, and its creator says real cartridges work. For accessories, the answer is not yet: no available device-specific evidence confirms the original GBA Link Cable, Wireless Adapter, or other Nintendo peripherals.

That distinction is important for anyone deciding whether the device can replace an original SP. Cartridge support has a concrete prototype demonstration. Accessory support still requires a maker-confirmed port, protocol implementation, and working test. Until those details are published, treat the FPGA SP as an ongoing project with demonstrated cartridge capability—not as a finished, universally compatible GBA SP replacement.
