To get operator status on a Minecraft server, you must own the server or already have authorized administrative access. Open the server console and enter op PlayerName, replacing PlayerName with the player’s exact Minecraft name. In a permitted in-game chat, use /op PlayerName. The command grants that player operator status and access to privileged server commands.
If you are an ordinary player on somebody else’s server, there is no legitimate self-service method. Ask the owner or an existing administrator to run the command.

What OP means in Minecraft
“OP” means operator. It is an administrative permission granted to an individual player, not a cosmetic rank or a setting that any player can turn on for themselves. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference describes /op as granting operator status to a player, while Minecraft’s command guide describes it as making a player an operator of a server.

An operator can use commands that ordinary players cannot. The exact commands available depend on the edition, server software and permission configuration, but OP is fundamentally a server-side privilege. It does not belong to your Minecraft account globally: it applies to that player on that particular world or server.

Requirements before you run the command
- Ownership or authorization: You must control the server, have access to its console, or already hold enough permission to issue administrative commands.
- The correct player name: Use the target player’s exact Minecraft name. A typo, wrong account or incorrect target prevents the intended promotion.
- The correct command context: A server console and in-game chat are different command entry points. Console syntax is normally entered as
op PlayerName; chat uses the slash form/op PlayerNamewhen the sender is permitted to run it. - The right edition: Java Edition and Bedrock use the same basic OP idea, but their documented command references and world settings differ.
OP cannot be obtained by changing a client-side option, editing your username or joining a server with a normal player account. The server must accept the promotion from an authorized control point.
Java Edition: promote a player from a dedicated-server console
Step 1: Open the server console
Use the console provided by the machine or hosting control panel that runs your Java Edition dedicated server. The console is the authoritative administration channel. If you cannot open it, ask the server owner or the person who manages the host to perform the change.

Step 2: Enter the OP command
Type:
op PlayerName
Replace PlayerName with the player’s exact Minecraft name, then submit the command. Minecraft’s official command guide presents the equivalent command as /op <playername>. The slash form is commonly used in chat; the console form shown above is the direct console entry.
Step 3: Confirm the result
After the console accepts the command, the named player has operator status on that server. Have the player reconnect or try an administrative command they are authorized to use. If nothing changes, check the console response, the spelling of the name and whether you used the console belonging to the correct server instance.

Using chat instead of the console
An existing operator or another sender with sufficient permission can enter /op PlayerName in the game chat. This is not a workaround for missing authority: the sender must already be allowed to run administrative commands. If the command is rejected in chat, use the server console or contact the owner.
Bedrock Dedicated Server: grant and remove OP
Grant operator status
Microsoft documents the Bedrock command as:
/op <player: target>
From a Bedrock Dedicated Server console, enter the player-specific form:
op PlayerName
The command grants operator status to the named player. Bedrock’s reference lists the command’s permission level as Admin and states that it does not require cheats when used in its documented server context. You still need legitimate administrative access to the console or an equivalent authorized command channel.
Remove operator status
To revoke the status on Bedrock Dedicated Server, run:
deop PlayerName
Use the exact name of the player whose operator privilege should be removed. This is the individual-player counterpart to changing a default for future joins; it does not alter the permissions of every player.

Target names and selectors
The Bedrock reference describes the target argument as a player name or target selector. For a one-player promotion, an exact player name is the least ambiguous choice. If a selector is used, verify that it identifies the intended player before submitting an administrative command.

Java Edition
In a Java single-player world, open the world’s World Options and enable Allow Commands. This permits command use in that world. When you open a Java world to LAN, the command setting is part of the world’s available options as well. This is a world-control setting, not a way to become operator on an unrelated multiplayer server.
Bedrock Edition
In a Bedrock world, open the world’s Game settings and enable Allow Cheats. Bedrock warns that enabling cheats permanently disables achievements in that world. Turning cheats off later does not restore achievement eligibility, so make a deliberate choice before enabling the setting on a long-term survival world.
These single-player and LAN controls answer a different question from “How do I OP another player on my dedicated server?” They enable commands in the local world; a dedicated server still requires its own authorized console or permission path.
Bedrock’s default player permission setting
Bedrock Dedicated Server includes a server.properties entry named default-player-permission-level. Its allowed values are:

This setting controls the permission level assigned to new players joining for the first time. It is not a general replacement for promoting an existing player with op PlayerName. If a player has already joined, use the individual OP command when you need to change that player’s status.
Because the setting affects first-time joins, review it before opening a new Bedrock server to people you do not fully trust. A broad default can grant more access than intended to every new account.
How to check why OP did not work
The console rejects the command
- Confirm that you are connected to the console for the intended server, not a client chat window or a different server instance.
- Check the command spelling and use the console form
op PlayerName. - Make sure the account name is exact. A near match is not enough.
- Review the server’s response for an indication that the command was entered by an unauthorized sender.
The chat command says you lack permission
The sender does not have a high-enough permission level. Ask an existing administrator to run the command from the console or from their authorized account. Entering the command repeatedly will not elevate the sender.
The player still cannot use commands
- Verify that the OP command targeted the correct account name.
- Check that the player connected to the same server and edition where the command was run.
- On Bedrock, use the documented server command and distinguish it from
default-player-permission-level, which concerns first-time players only. - Have the player reconnect after the server confirms the status change, then test the intended command.
The command works in one place but not another
Java dedicated-server administration, Bedrock Dedicated Server administration, in-game chat and local-world settings are separate contexts. A command accepted in one context does not prove that the same account has authority in another server or world. Return to the access point that owns the world you are trying to administer.
How to manage OP safely
Grant only the access that is needed
OP is a broad administrative privilege. Give it to trusted people who need server-level control, rather than using it as a general player rank. For a temporary task, note who was promoted and remove the privilege when the task is complete.

Use the console for controlled changes
The console provides a clear administrative record and avoids asking an already privileged player to execute a command in public chat. It is also the correct recovery path when no in-game sender currently has enough permission.
Revoke access explicitly
On Bedrock Dedicated Server, use deop PlayerName when a player should no longer be an operator. If a player leaves a team or no longer needs administration, do not rely on inactivity to remove the privilege.
Protect the server configuration
Keep console access restricted to the people who manage the server. Do not give ordinary players access to the host control panel simply because they want OP. The ability to run the OP command is itself the authority that must be protected.

On a server you administer, open its console and run op PlayerName. In permitted chat, run /op PlayerName. Bedrock Dedicated Server also supports deop PlayerName to remove the privilege. If you do not own the server and do not already have administrative permission, ask the owner; there is no legitimate command that lets a regular player self-OP.
