No—Google describes the vehicle icon as a driving-avatar customization, not a route-planning control. Its help pages do not document changing the icon as affecting route guidance or estimated arrival times. That is the best-supported answer from Google’s documentation, not a guarantee about every detail of Maps’ internal implementation.
What the vehicle icon changes
Google says that during driving navigation you can change the blue arrow to a car or another available vehicle. You can also choose a color or switch back to the arrow. The setting changes the avatar displayed on the map; Google’s instructions do not describe it as a way to choose or modify a route. What affects routes and estimated arrival times
Google documents route choices and travel-time estimates separately from the avatar setting. Its directions help page says route options can take factors such as duration, distance, price, travel-mode preference, and relevance into account. During navigation, Maps can also use real-time traffic information and provide route updates when a better route is available.

If your route or ETA changes after you switch icons
The timing alone does not show that the icon caused the change. Traffic conditions, route options, and navigation updates are documented reasons a displayed route or travel time may differ. Google’s reviewed help pages do not identify avatar selection as an input to route selection or ETA, but they also do not expressly guarantee that it can never affect Maps’ internal calculations.

How to change the driving avatar
- Start navigation in the Google Maps app.
- Tap the blue arrow or the vehicle currently shown.
- Swipe through the available avatars, choose one, and select a color if offered.
- Tap Done. Available icons and wording may vary as Google updates the app.
