Choose a PlayStation passkey if your devices support it and you can reliably access the passkey manager that stores it; it replaces password entry with your device’s biometric unlock or screen-lock PIN. Choose 2-step verification (2SV) if passkeys are unavailable on your devices or you prefer signing in with your password and a separate code. For 2SV, save the backup codes before you need them. Sony’s support guidance explains how each method works, but does not establish a measured, universal security winner.
How the sign-in methods differ
| Method | What you use to sign in | What access it depends on |
|---|---|---|
| Passkey | A passkey replaces password sign-in. You approve access using your device’s biometric unlock or screen-lock PIN. | A compatible device and access to the passkey or credential manager holding your passkey. Sony says another device using the same passkey or password manager may also work. PlayStation Support |
| 2-step verification (2SV) | Your account password, followed by a separate code sent by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. | Access to the phone number or authenticator app registered for 2SV, or a saved one-use backup code. PlayStation Support |
These are different sign-in flows, not two names for the same setting. Sony describes passkeys as a password replacement and 2SV as an added verification step. Its support material does not offer comparative effectiveness data proving that one is categorically more secure.
Which option fits your situation?
Choose a passkey if your devices and credential manager are ready
A passkey is a practical fit if you use compatible devices and can reliably reach the passkey manager that stores your credential. Sony supports passkey sign-in on PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, the PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac, and allows users to add multiple passkeys. Its guide says most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later are supported. Check Sony’s passkey guidance for current compatibility details.
Choose 2SV if passkeys do not work for your devices
If a device is unsupported or you encounter a compatibility problem, 2SV is the straightforward alternative. Sony’s guide directs users whose devices do not support passkeys to its 2SV instructions. You can also use the passkey password-fallback route where available. Compatibility issues may involve some hardware security keys, certain Android-to-Windows combinations, outdated browsers, or Remote Play for Mac; Sony says that Remote Play users with passkey trouble may need to revert to password sign-in. Sony lists troubleshooting and fallback details here.

Consider the checkout trade-off
If you use Password at Checkout, check the account-setting trade-off before enabling a passkey: Sony says Password at Checkout is incompatible with accounts that have passkeys enabled. See Sony’s security best practices.
What to expect when using 2SV
Sony may request a 2SV code on the first sign-in after activation, after you manually sign out, after a password reset, or when you change your sign-in ID or online ID. A code expires 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt, according to Sony’s setup guidance. Sony lists the code triggers and setup steps.

2SV can use SMS or an authenticator app. Pick the method you can reliably access, then record the backup codes during setup rather than waiting until your phone or app is unavailable.
Set up your chosen method
Enable a passkey
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management and open Security.
- Enable Sign in with Passkey, choose Create a Passkey, and follow the prompts.
- On PS5, go to Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey, then scan the QR code with a mobile device.
You can manage, add, or remove passkeys in Account Management. Sony says you can disable passkey sign-in and create a password to return to password sign-in. Use only QR codes you trust: Sony warns that fake voucher or in-game offer codes can be used to steal account access or personal information. Read Sony’s QR-code safety guidance.

Enable 2-step verification
- In Account Management, open Security and select 2-step Verification Status.
- Choose SMS or an authenticator app. Enter your mobile number or scan the app’s QR code, as applicable.
- Enter the verification code to confirm setup and record the backup codes Sony provides.
Sony also provides console setup routes for PS5 and PS4; use the instructions for your console rather than combining the two paths. You can deactivate and reactivate 2SV to choose another verification method. See Sony’s 2SV setup instructions.
Plan for losing a phone or device
If you use 2SV
Sony provides 10 backup codes, each usable once. Save them somewhere secure and accessible if you lose access to your registered phone or authenticator app. If you have neither a backup code nor access to the registered phone, Sony says account recovery may require contacting support. Sony’s recovery guidance explains what to do when you cannot receive a code.

If you use a passkey
If your original phone is lost, Sony says another device using the same passkey or password manager may let you sign in. Your practical recovery options therefore depend on whether you can access the credential from another device. See Sony’s passkey help.

- For browser sign-in, Sony advises using a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge.
- Sony cautions against using an Android PIN code as a passkey.
- Some hardware security keys and some Android-to-Windows passkey combinations may have issues; do not assume a particular key or device pairing is guaranteed to work.
- For Remote Play on Mac, passkey trouble may require returning to password sign-in.
Sony’s platform and device guidance can change, so consult its current passkey support page if setup does not match these steps.

Can you change your choice later?
Yes. Sony says passkey sign-in can be disabled and a password created to return to password sign-in. Its 2SV instructions allow deactivation and reactivation to select another verification method. Before switching, consider whether you have access to the devices, phone number, authenticator app, or recovery codes your next sign-in method will require.
