No—the standard PS5 does not have a removable graphics card that you can replace or upgrade like a desktop PC. It uses a custom AMD/Sony processor with an integrated AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine. The GPU is built into the console’s main processor and motherboard design, so you cannot install a desktop graphics card, connect a supported eGPU, or swap in a “PS5 GPU upgrade” through the HDMI, USB, or storage ports.

When people search for a “PS5 graphics card,” they are usually asking one of three things: what GPU the PS5 has, whether it can be upgraded, or what to do if its graphics hardware fails. The answers are different from the desktop-PC model, where a graphics card is a separate component.
What graphics processor does the PS5 have?
Sony identifies the original PS5’s graphics engine as an AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based GPU. Its published specifications include:
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
| Feature | Original PS5 specification |
|---|---|
| Graphics architecture | Custom AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine |
| Compute performance | Up to 10.3 teraflops |
| Variable frequency | Up to 2.23 GHz |
| Ray tracing | Hardware-accelerated ray tracing |
| System memory | 16 GB GDDR6 |
| Memory bandwidth | 448 GB/s |
These are launch-era specifications for the standard PS5 family. Hardware revisions can differ internally, and the PS5 Pro is a separate model with different graphics hardware.
The PS5’s 16 GB of GDDR6 is shared system memory rather than a removable VRAM module on a graphics card. The console’s CPU, GPU, memory, storage controller, and other components are designed to work as one fixed platform. Sony also describes hardware-based ray-tracing acceleration as integrated into the PS5 GPU; it is not a feature that can be added later with an accessory.
Can you remove or replace the PS5 graphics card?
Not as a normal consumer upgrade. The PS5 has no PCIe graphics-card slot or comparable expansion interface. Its custom processor is mounted as part of the console motherboard assembly, rather than as a plug-in card.

That makes a “GPU replacement” fundamentally different from removing a PC graphics card and installing another one. - HDMI carries the console’s video and audio output to a display.
- USB connects peripherals and compatible accessories.
- The internal M.2 slot is for compatible SSD storage, not graphics processing.
None of these interfaces provides a supported way to install a desktop GPU inside the console.
Can an external GPU upgrade a PS5?
No supported PS5 eGPU upgrade exists. External GPU enclosures are designed primarily for compatible computers with the necessary high-speed interface, operating-system support, drivers, and software integration. Sony does not provide a PS5 eGPU feature, external graphics enclosure support, or a PC-style driver model for adding a second graphics processor.

A USB graphics adapter, HDMI accessory, capture device, or external enclosure cannot increase the PS5’s rendering performance. Be particularly cautious with marketplace listings that use phrases such as “PS5 graphics card,” “PS5 GPU upgrade,” or “USB PS5 GPU.” Such listings may refer to an unrelated PC product, a repair component, a cooling accessory, or misleading terminology. They should not be treated as equivalent to a supported graphics-card upgrade.
Does a PS5 SSD improve graphics performance?
No. A compatible M.2 SSD can expand the amount of game storage available to the console, but it does not add GPU compute units, increase ray-tracing capability, or make the PS5 render games like a more powerful console.
Storage and graphics processing are separate functions. An SSD can reduce the need to delete and reinstall games and can support game loading requirements when it meets Sony’s compatibility specifications. It cannot replace the PS5’s graphics processor or upgrade its frame-rate and resolution capabilities.

What should you do if the PS5 GPU fails?
A suspected graphics failure is a console repair problem, not a graphics-card replacement job. Symptoms can include no picture, visual artifacts, crashes during graphics-intensive games, overheating shutdowns, or a console that powers on without producing a display signal. Those symptoms can also be caused by the HDMI cable, television, software, power delivery, overheating, or another motherboard component, so they do not prove that the GPU itself has failed.

Sony’s U.S. and Canada warranty terms provide for repair or replacement with a factory-recertified product at Sony’s option, subject to the applicable conditions. Those terms also warn that unauthorized opening, modification, upgrades, or expansions can affect coverage in specified circumstances. Warranty and repair rules vary by country, so readers outside the U.S. and Canada should use their local PlayStation support channel.
An independent repair technician may diagnose or replace a motherboard assembly or perform specialist board-level work. That is materially different from replacing a plug-in graphics card. It can require equipment, board-revision-specific parts, microsoldering expertise, and a way to validate the repair. Do not assume that a loose “PS5 GPU replacement chip” is compatible with every PS5 revision or that installing one is a safe DIY project.

No. The PS5 Pro is a separate console, not a graphics card that fits inside the original PS5. It is the straightforward PlayStation hardware route for people who want substantially higher graphics performance without attempting motherboard-level modification.
Sony announced the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, with a launch date of November 7, 2024. Sony describes the model as having:
