Is Lossless Scaling free?

The current Steam description refers to LSFG 3, a proprietary machine-learning model developed for Lossless Scaling. LSFG generates intermediate output frames from the source frames; it does not cause the game engine to genuinely render every displayed frame. LSFG Fixed and Adaptive modes
Fixed mode multiplies the original frame rate by a selected factor. For example, a sufficiently stable 48-frame-per-second source could be matched to a 240 Hz display with a 5x output target. Adaptive mode is intended for output targets that are not necessarily an integer multiple of the base frame rate. The developer introduced it for fractional output targets and frame-pacing situations where the desired display rate does not divide cleanly into the game’s source rate.
LSFG 3.1 also added quality improvements, reduced ghosting and flicker, improved border handling, and a Performance mode intended to reduce GPU load. The exact result depends on the graphics hardware and configuration. The latest update listed in the developer’s news archive is the Performance Mode Hotfix dated July 14, 2025, which addressed a critical quality issue in LSFG 3.1 Performance mode, fixed a hotkey key-repeat problem, and added Macedonian localization. The retrieved official pages did not expose a definitive current executable version number, so it would be misleading to state one here.

These are the requirements shown on the Steam store page, not a promise that every qualifying PC will deliver the same quality, latency, or frame rate. Scaling and frame generation consume GPU resources. The Steam listing recommends having free GPU resources available because Lossless Scaling can otherwise reduce the game’s original frame rate.
Windowed and borderless modes are the normal setup
Lossless Scaling normally supports windowed and borderless-fullscreen applications. Exclusive fullscreen is not the standard supported mode. The Steam listing notes that exclusive fullscreen may work when Lossless Scaling output is configured for a second display, but this should be treated as a special arrangement rather than a universal compatibility solution.
A practical first setup is:
- Set the game to windowed or borderless mode.
- Choose a resolution and frame-rate limit that the game can maintain consistently.
- Open Lossless Scaling and select the target display or output behavior.
- Choose an image-scaling algorithm if you only need resolution enlargement.
- Enable LSFG only after the base frame rate is stable enough to provide a good source for interpolation.
- Test a game’s menus, camera movement, HUD, and fast motion rather than judging only a static scene.
Windows 11 24H2 capture considerations
Windows 11 version 24H2 changed relevant behavior around the Desktop Duplication API. In a November 16, 2024 announcement, the developer described updates to Windows Graphics Capture behavior and frame-pacing logic for newer systems. The announcement also explains that Multiplane Overlay support becomes highly desirable for some DXGI scenarios and that Windows Graphics Capture is used differently on newer systems.

This is a compatibility consideration, not a guarantee that every Windows 11 24H2 installation will behave identically. If capture is unreliable after a Windows update, install the current version delivered through Steam, test borderless mode, update the graphics driver, and compare the available capture or scaling options rather than assuming the game or monitor is defective.

Linux support: community port, not the native Windows app
The Steam listing says that the LSFG feature is available on Linux through lsfg-vk, a community-driven port. That should not be confused with the same official native Linux application experience as the Windows product. Linux users should review the current project documentation and compatibility information before buying specifically for that workflow.
Does Lossless Scaling work with online games and anti-cheat?
The Steam listing says that community testing has found Lossless Scaling safe with online games using built-in anti-cheat systems, but it explicitly does not guarantee compatibility. Use it at your own discretion and check the rules or support guidance for the particular game and anti-cheat service.
Do not treat “it works for other players” as universal approval. Anti-cheat behavior can change with game updates, anti-cheat updates, launch options, overlays, capture methods, or account policies. No additional hardware is required merely to purchase or install Lossless Scaling. A compatible Windows PC, a supported game or application mode, and enough GPU capacity are the important starting points.
A high-refresh display becomes useful when the generated output is intended to exceed 60 Hz. The developer’s examples include matching 48 FPS to 240 Hz with a 5x multiplier and 60 FPS to 360 Hz with a 6x multiplier. Those examples describe possible matching targets, not guaranteed performance requirements. If your game cannot maintain a suitable base frame rate, a higher-refresh monitor alone will not fix the limitation.
If your goal is to use those output targets, a 240Hz gaming monitor can be an optional companion purchase. It does not include Lossless Scaling and is not required for the software to work. Check the monitor’s actual resolution, input bandwidth, variable-refresh support, and connection requirements before buying; product models, prices, and availability change.

A second GPU is also optional. The official Steam description says Lossless Scaling can offload scaling or frame-generation work to another GPU. This may preserve the game’s original frame rate and potentially reduce latency, but the benefit depends on the hardware, driver, connection, and configuration. It is not a universal reason to buy a second graphics card.
Common problems after downloading
The game does not scale
- Confirm that the game is running in windowed or borderless-fullscreen mode.
- Check that Lossless Scaling is targeting the correct window and display.
- Try a simpler scaling mode before enabling frame generation.

- Restart both the game and Lossless Scaling after changing display mode or resolution.
Frame generation looks worse than expected

- Check for ghosting, flicker, HUD artifacts, and incorrect borders during motion.
- Try Fixed versus Adaptive mode according to whether your target refresh rate is an integer multiple of the base rate.
- Test LSFG 3.1 Performance mode if GPU load is limiting the source frame rate, while recognizing that quality depends on the system.
- Use a lower output multiplier if the source frame rate is inconsistent.
The game’s original FPS falls when Lossless Scaling is enabled
Scaling and frame generation require GPU time. Reduce the game’s graphics workload, use a lower-cost scaling or performance mode, lower the output resolution, or stop other GPU-intensive applications. A second GPU may help in some configurations, but it is not guaranteed to improve every system.
Input feels delayed
Frame generation does not eliminate the latency of the game’s original input and rendering pipeline.
