Does the RTX 5060 Ti Need a Bigger PSU Than the RTX 4060?

NVIDIA’s 600 W system-power recommendation applies to the RTX 5060 Ti, not the RTX 5060: both the RTX 5060 and RTX 4060 are listed at 550 W.

Only the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti has a higher NVIDIA system-power recommendation than the RTX 4060: 600 W versus 550 W. The RTX 5060 is also listed at 550 W, so its recommendation is unchanged. These are whole-system recommendations, not a rule that every owner must replace a power supply.

How NVIDIA’s PSU recommendations compare

NVIDIA lists required system power separately from the graphics card’s own total graphics power. Here is the comparison on its product specification pages:

Graphics card Required system power Total graphics power
GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 600 W 180 W
GeForce RTX 5060 550 W 145 W
GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 550 W 165 W or 160 W
GeForce RTX 4060 550 W 115 W

Sources: NVIDIA’s RTX 5060 family specifications and NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 specifications. The RTX 4060 Ti total graphics power is listed as 165 W or 160 W, while its system-power recommendation is 550 W.

Does an RTX 5060 Ti require a PSU upgrade?

Not automatically. If your existing PSU is below NVIDIA’s 600 W recommendation, that is a reason to check the complete build and the exact card’s requirements before buying—not proof on its own that an upgrade is mandatory. A PSU at or above 600 W meets the stated capacity recommendation, but capacity alone does not confirm that a particular system or card is compatible.

NVIDIA says system power can differ depending on configuration. Its RTX 4060-family recommendation is based on a PC configured with a Ryzen 9 5900X; your processor and other components affect the system-level context. NVIDIA also cautions that specifications may vary by add-in-card manufacturer, so check the particular board partner model rather than relying only on the reference-family figures.

Check the connector as well as wattage

NVIDIA lists one PCIe 8-pin cable or a 300 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 cable for both reference RTX 5060-family products. Before purchase, confirm that the exact graphics card’s stated connector is supported by a cable available from your PSU. The family-level connector information does not establish the requirements of every partner card.

What to verify before replacing a PSU

  1. Identify the exact card. Look up the manufacturer’s specifications for the specific RTX 5060 Ti or RTX 5060 model you plan to use.
  2. Check your PSU’s rated capacity. Compare it with the card maker’s recommendation and consider the rest of your system rather than treating the GPU’s total graphics power as the PSU requirement.
  3. Confirm the power cable. Verify the card’s connector requirement and that your PSU has the appropriate cable; do not assume the reference connector options apply to every model.
  4. Assess the whole build. Account for your CPU and other components. NVIDIA explicitly notes that system power varies with configuration.

The available NVIDIA specifications establish the reference figures, but they do not determine whether an individual PSU is suitable for every PC. Without the exact card model and system configuration, a blanket recommendation to replace every RTX 4060 owner’s PSU would not be justified.
