What does the Vault number do?
It appears to be an identifier that helps distinguish one Vault from another. You can choose a number you like or one that makes your Vault easier to remember. The available evidence does not indicate that choosing a particular number changes gameplay.
Players have specifically asked whether the number is a map seed. The community discussions below describe it as an identifier, not a seed. There is no supported basis here for claiming it changes map generation, loot odds, or hidden bonuses.

Which creation choice matters instead?
Pay attention to Survival Mode, a separate option on the new-Vault screen. Bethesda Support says, “When you start a new Vault, there is a checkbox to turn on Survival Mode above where you select your Vault’s number.” The number and the mode are separate choices.

Bethesda also states that Survival Mode is for new Vaults only and that you cannot switch a Vault from Survival Mode back to normal. If you want a normal Vault, check that setting before creating one.

Are Seasons affected by your number?
There is no evidence that your chosen Vault number determines a Season’s experiment or gameplay. Bethesda describes Seasons as separate, time-limited adventures from the main Vault in its October 23, 2025 announcement; they are a distinct feature, not evidence of a number-based mechanic.

What the official information confirms
Bethesda’s support page confirms the placement of the Survival Mode checkbox relative to the number selector and the one-way nature of that mode choice. It does not explicitly say that the Vault number has no mechanical effect. The practical answer that it is an identifier, rather than a gameplay setting, comes from player discussions and the available evidence—not an official Bethesda guarantee.
Bethesda describes Fallout Shelter as a game about building a Vault, managing Dwellers, and protecting them from wasteland dangers. Its game page lists Seasons among the features. Bethesda’s game page.
