Donald Mustard announced on September 8, 2023, that he would retire from his role as Chief Creative Officer at Epic Games that month. He said he was proud to have helped shape Fortnite and wanted to spend time with his wife and family. He later joined AGBO as a partner in November 2023.
What did Donald Mustard announce?
In a farewell post on September 8, 2023, Mustard wrote: “After an incredible adventure, I will be retiring from my role as Chief Creative Officer at Epic this month.” That was his formal title; “Fortnite creative lead” is a shorthand for his prominent role in the game’s creative direction, not the title he gave in the announcement. Game Developer reproduced his statement.
Mustard said he had spent nearly 25 years in the games industry and was proud of what his teams had made. He singled out Fortnite, saying, “I am especially proud of the opportunity I’ve had to help create and shape Fortnite.” His wording credits him with helping create and shape the game; it does not say that he was its sole creator.
Why did he leave Epic?
Mustard said he was “excited to spend time with my wife and family.” The announcement did not give a more specific reason for his retirement, so claims about disagreements, burnout, or dissatisfaction with Fortnite’s direction are not established by his statement.

What did Mustard work on before Fortnite?
In his farewell, Mustard looked back on a career that included Advent Rising, the formation of ChAIR, Undertow, Shadow Complex, and the Infinity Blade trilogy. Epic acquired ChAIR in 2008. Mustard became Epic’s worldwide creative director in 2016, a separate milestone from the acquisition. Game Developer’s account of his career describes those steps.
Did Mustard’s retirement mean Epic was pulling back from Fortnite?
Epic’s September 28, 2023 announcement that it was laying off around 830 employees—16% of its jobs—did not link the layoffs to Mustard’s retirement. In that same announcement, CEO Tim Sweeney said Epic would continue investing in Fortnite first-party development and the creator ecosystem and economy. He attributed financial pressure in part to growth driven primarily by creator content with significant revenue sharing, which he described as lower-margin than the earlier Battle Royale-led business. Epic’s announcement provides the company’s explanation.

What did Mustard do after Epic?
AGBO’s official company page lists Mustard as a partner who joined in November 2023, after his retirement announcement. Its bio describes him as a director, producer, writer, and game designer. This establishes his later role at AGBO, but not that he had announced a next job when he shared his retirement from Epic. AGBO’s biography of Donald Mustard gives the company’s account.
