Sony’s safety guide confirms the core hardware: an eight-core Zen 2 CPU, an RDNA-based GPU rated at 16.7 TFLOPS, 18 GB of memory split across two types, and a 2 TB SSD. Sony’s performance figures are company claims for supported games, not a promise that every title will run faster or look better.

What the PS5 Pro specs leak got right—and what matters more
Insider Gaming reported the pre-release specification list; Sony’s September announcement and official safety guide later established what shipped. Sony’s September 10, 2024 reveal said the GPU had 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5 and memory was 28% faster, enabling up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. These are Sony’s comparisons, not independent benchmark results.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Sony’s November 2024 launch announcement described ray tracing as double, and at times triple, the speed of the current PS5. That is Sony’s claim about ray-tracing performance; it should not be read as a uniform result across all games. Sony says PS5 Pro features apply to selected games enhanced for the console, with results varying by title.
What PSSR does
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-driven machine-learning upscaling technology. It is designed to improve image clarity in compatible games. Sony’s UK product page describes compatible titles running at 60 fps or up to 120 fps with ray tracing and AI-enhanced 4K output. Those are capability claims for supported games, not guaranteed settings or performance for every PS5 Pro title.
Games, PS4 compatibility and accessories
Sony says games playable on PS5 also play on PS5 Pro. Its Game Boost feature can apply to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games and may stabilize or improve performance in supported titles; the outcome depends on the game.
Sony lists PlayStation VR2, PlayStation Portal, DualSense Edge, Access controller, Pulse Elite and Pulse Explore among compatible PS5 accessories. Compatibility does not mean every accessory or feature works identically in every game.

Disc drive and storage expansion
Physical games and movies
The PS5 Pro package does not include an optical disc drive. Sony sells an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately. With that drive installed, PlayStation’s setup information says users can play PS5 and supported PS4 physical discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD discs. Do not assume that every older PlayStation disc format is supported.
Adding SSD capacity
The console has a 2 TB internal SSD, some of which is reserved, and an M.2 SSD expansion connector. Sony’s listed connector establishes that expansion is supported, but a particular drive model should not be assumed compatible; check Sony’s current requirements before buying.
Launch date and announced launch prices
Sony announced the PS5 Pro on September 10, 2024, with a November 7, 2024 release. The following are Sony’s announced launch recommended retail prices, not current prices:
| Market | Announced launch price |
|---|---|
| United States | $699.99 USD |
| United Kingdom | £699.99 GBP |
| Europe | €799.99 EUR |
| Japan | ¥119,980 JPY, including tax |
Availability and retail pricing can change by country and over time, so these launch figures are not a guide to what a console costs now.
