At the U.S. price of $19.99, DK Island & Emerald Rush is worth considering if you enjoy repeatable timed challenges; it is a harder sell if you want a substantial story expansion or a large island packed with missions. The add-on’s value rests mainly on Emerald Rush, while DK Island offers sightseeing and nostalgia rather than a full second campaign.
What you get in DK Island & Emerald Rush
Nintendo’s add-on has two distinct parts: a familiar setting to explore and a post-story challenge mode. Nintendo describes both on its official store page.
DK Island: a nostalgic place to explore
DK Island reimagines Donkey Kong’s home with landmarks including DK’s Treehouse and the Gangplank Galleon. You can take photos with familiar characters, use Banandium Chips to obtain character statues, and find hidden bonus stages in mine-cart tracks and jungle ruins.
Nintendo Support says you can get your first look at the island by speaking to Squawks after reaching the Racing Layer. After completing the main game, DK Island becomes its own Layer, where you can decorate with character statues. These official features make the island a destination for fans, but they do not amount to a separate story campaign.

Emerald Rush: the repeatable challenge
Emerald Rush is a timed mode built around collecting emerald ore, completing side missions and putting together temporary perk combinations. Each run offers a chance to earn exclusive in-game rewards, and the mode is designed to play differently from the main adventure. Nintendo says access begins after you clear the main storyline.
Nintendo Life reviewer Jim Norman described Emerald Rush as roguelike-style: temporary perks reset between runs, while rewards unlock over time. He praised how its quick, replayable runs use Bananza’s movement and destruction mechanics. His review called it “the star of the show.”

What the price means
Nintendo’s U.S. purchase flow displayed $19.99 when checked on October 8, 2026. That is a U.S. storefront price, not a guaranteed price for every region or a promise that the listing will remain unchanged. Check your local Nintendo eShop before buying. Nintendo Life’s September 17, 2025 review reported prices of $19.99 in North America and £16.99 in the UK; the UK figure is review-reported, not a current UK store check.
This is digital content for Nintendo Switch 2, not a standalone game. You need the full version of Donkey Kong Bananza to play it. If you do not already own the base game, include its cost in your overall budget—the DLC price alone is not the total cost of getting into Bananza.

Why opinions on the DLC are divided
The two components offer different kinds of value, and they are not equally substantial. Emerald Rush gives players who like short, repeatable challenges a reason to return after the story. DK Island’s landmarks, characters and collectibles may appeal to fans, but its exploration is relatively light.
Norman’s Nintendo Life review praised the challenge mode but criticized the island’s limited activity outside it. He reported no unique Banandium Gems or Fossils, missions or bosses on DK Island, and said much of the appeal was sightseeing and the statue hut. His verdict was that the mode was enjoyable, but the overall package would not justify the price for every player. This is one reviewer’s judgment, not a universal consensus or a guaranteed playtime estimate. Read the September 17, 2025 Nintendo Life review for his full assessment.

Who is most likely to find it worthwhile?
| More likely to enjoy the DLC | Less likely to find it worth the price |
|---|---|
| You enjoy short, repeatable timed challenges and experimenting with changing perks. | You are mainly looking for a long new campaign or substantial story content. |
| You have finished Bananza and want a post-story activity. | You expect DK Island to be a large new area with missions, bosses and extensive standalone activities. |
| You value revisiting Donkey Kong settings and characters, even when exploration is the main attraction. | You have little interest in either Emerald Rush’s challenge loop or the island’s nostalgic sightseeing. |
The recommendation is therefore conditional: the add-on is easier to justify for players drawn to Emerald Rush than for those buying it primarily for a new island adventure. There is no reliable universal playtime figure here, so a price-per-hour calculation would be guesswork.
