That destruction makes exploration feel unusually physical and inventive. The reviews cited here are strongly positive, though the adventure takes time to fully open up, so “instant classic” is best treated as a verdict to earn rather than a settled fact.
What is Donkey Kong Bananza?
Donkey Kong Bananza is a 3D platformer for Nintendo Switch 2, released on July 17, 2025. Donkey Kong and Pauline travel through a vast underground world, where punching, grabbing, tossing, climbing and smashing let players interact directly with the terrain. Nintendo describes it as an action-adventure built around that physical interaction.

It is a Switch 2 game, not an original Nintendo Switch release. Nintendo’s official pages describe the game and platform: Donkey Kong Bananza for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo UK’s game page.
Does smashing the world make the platforming better?
Yes: destruction is more than a way to clear obstacles. Because Donkey Kong can break through the underground environment, the terrain itself becomes part of the problem-solving. A wall can be a barrier to demolish, a surface to climb, or a clue that there may be another way forward. That changes the feel of exploration: instead of only following a route laid out by platforms, players can probe the world and make space for themselves.
#1 Best Overall
- Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
- A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
- Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you
- Pair up with Pauline to use Bananza Transformations: smash through obstacles with the raw strength of Kong form, gallop with incredible speed as a Zebra, and more
- Team up with a friend in two-player co-op as Donkey Kong and Pauline! Blast foes and terrain alike with Pauline’s voice as you explore together
The payoff depends on how often that freedom leads to useful routes or discoveries, rather than simply letting players pound on scenery. Nintendo Life’s review praises the originality and fun of the destruction and exploration, while noting that the premise takes time to come fully into its own. That gradual development matters: the central mechanic is compelling, but its early impression is not the whole adventure.
Is the destruction still fun after the novelty?
The strongest critical response suggests that it is. Engadget reviewer Devindra Hardawar wrote that the “smash everything” mechanic was “an absolute delight” after playing for most of a week. GameSpot described the game as “a raucous, wildly inventive, and propulsive platformer,” presenting it as a fresh start for the character.
Rank #2
- Embark on a brand-new Donkey Kong adventure exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
- Explore the Underground World with dynamic environments and hidden secrets.
- Battle VoidCo and its minions using DK’s signature strength and powerful punches.
- Team up with a mysterious new companion with unique gameplay abilities.
- Recover the Golden Bananas across thrilling, action-packed levels.
Those are review judgments, not proof that every player will enjoy the same rhythm. The key question for a prospective player is whether they enjoy experimenting with a world that can be broken open, and whether they want exploration and movement to share the spotlight. If that sounds appealing, the core idea offers more than a brief novelty; if you prefer tightly prescribed platforming routes, the emphasis on environmental destruction may be less of a draw.
How does the adventure develop?
Nintendo Life’s assessment is particularly useful here: the setup becomes more satisfying as the game progresses, rather than arriving fully formed at the start. That means pacing is part of the experience. Players looking for an immediate succession of fully developed variations may find the opening less persuasive than the later adventure; those willing to let the underground world unfold may find the concept gaining force.

- Uncover a wide variety of environments, like forest, canyon, and lagoon, as you delve underground
- Reshape the world as you tear through it, with the help of…an Odd Rock?
The available reviews support enthusiasm for the creativity and momentum, but they do not establish a stage-by-stage account, completion time, or a full measure of challenge variety. It is safer to judge the game on its central loop and the reported gradual build than to assume every section escalates in the same way.
How does it look and run?
Nintendo Life reported striking vistas and performance at a smooth 60 frames per second for most of its play. That is the reviewer’s observation, not an independently verified technical test or a guarantee for every scene and play condition. The visual scale of the underground environments complements the game’s emphasis on moving through and reshaping the world.
Rank #4
- Full version of game required to use DLC. Sold separately.
Is Donkey Kong Bananza an instant classic?
It is reasonable to call Donkey Kong Bananza one of the most inventive platformers in the reviews cited here, but “instant classic” remains a subjective label. Engadget’s Hardawar explicitly cautioned that it was too early in the Switch 2’s lifecycle to make a definitive comparison with games of that stature. GameSpot’s praise and Nintendo Life’s enthusiasm make a strong case for the game’s originality; the gradual opening keeps that praise from being the same thing as consensus on its historical standing.

Nintendo reported 2.6 million cumulative worldwide sell-through during the game’s first 12 weeks. That is an early, period-specific sales milestone, not a current lifetime total; it indicates a strong start but does not settle the question of lasting legacy. The figure appears in Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s software sales data.
