If DON’T SCREAM crashes before the menu, while loading, or during a session, start by checking the game’s listed PC requirements and pending updates. Then use Compatibility Mode as a test—not a guaranteed fix—and report persistent crashes with useful details. The available community reports are from November 2024 and do not establish one cause or workaround that works for everyone.
Why might DON’T SCREAM crash on startup or after loading?
There is no confirmed single cause in the available reports. In a Steam discussion spanning 31 October to 6 November 2024, players described a launch crash after a hotfix and another crash after being killed and loading back into the game. A developer asked whether Compatibility Mode changed the launch failure, but the thread does not establish that it fixed the issue.
Use the checks below to narrow down your own situation. The requirements are a screening tool, not proof that a particular component caused a crash, and the older community reports should not be treated as confirmation of a current, widespread bug.
10 checks to try when DON’T SCREAM crashes
1. Compare your PC with the Steam requirements
Check your Windows version, processor, RAM, graphics card, DirectX support, and free storage against the current Steam listing for DON’T SCREAM.

| Storage | 17 GB available | 17 GB available |
The listing also says a microphone is required to play and a headset and SSD are highly recommended. Those are setup notes, not stated crash fixes.
2. Check whether a game update is pending
In Steam, open Library, right-click DON’T SCREAM, and choose Properties > Updates to review its update setting. If Steam shows an update waiting, let it finish before testing again. The developer has described updates that improved performance and fixed bugs, but that does not prove a particular crash is fixed in the version installed on your PC.

3. Try Compatibility Mode as a diagnostic
In a 5 November 2024 Steam reply, developer [DCC] Dec asked a player whose game would not start whether it still crashed when launched using Compatibility Mode. Treat that as a test to compare behavior, not a confirmed remedy: the reply does not say the player’s problem was solved.
If you can access the game’s launch options, try the Compatibility Mode setting available there, then note whether the crash happens at the same point. If the setting is unavailable or the game still crashes, record that result for your report rather than assuming the test rules out a cause.

4. Consider reinstalling if the installation may be damaged
One Steam community member, RyanMcBain, wrote on 6 November 2024: “I fixed the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the game.” This is one player’s report, not evidence that reinstalling works generally.
If you choose to try it, uninstall DON’T SCREAM from your Steam Library, then install it again from the same library entry. Allow the installation to complete before launching. Do not treat this as a guaranteed fix.

5. Identify exactly when the crash occurs
Before changing more settings, note whether the failure happens on launch, before the menu, during loading, or at a repeatable point in play. Record any error text and whether the game closes to desktop, freezes, or returns to a loading screen. A clear crash stage helps distinguish your symptom from the different launch and post-load reports in the 2024 discussion.
6. Write down recent changes
Note whether the crash began after a game update, a settings change, or another change to your PC. The 2024 thread included a report of a launch failure after a hotfix, but it does not establish that the hotfix caused every similar crash. A timeline is useful context for the developer; it is not itself a diagnosis.

7. Capture evidence you can reproduce
If the crash is repeatable, write down the steps that lead to it and capture a screenshot or video when possible. Include the exact error text rather than paraphrasing it. The developer’s bug-reporting announcement says its tracker accepts screenshots, videos, and logs.
8. Send a report through the in-game reporter
The developer points players to the in-game bug reporter, accessible with F9 or through Extras. If you can reach the game interface, include the crash stage, reproduction steps, error text, and your PC specifications.
9. Use an online reporting channel if the game will not stay open
If the crash prevents you from using the in-game reporter, the developer also points players to its official bug tracker, Discord bug-reporting channel, and Steam forums. Choose a channel you can access and include the same diagnostic details; attach logs or visual evidence where the channel supports them.
10. Include your OS and hardware details in the report
List your Windows version, processor, RAM, graphics card, and the point at which the game fails. Add any recent changes and the steps that reproduce the crash. These details give the developer information to investigate; they do not guarantee a particular response or fix.

Quick Recap
What to avoid
- Do not assume that meeting the minimum requirements proves the PC is free of compatibility or stability problems.
- Do not treat the 2024 Compatibility Mode question or one reinstall anecdote as a universal solution.
- Do not infer that a newer update fixes your specific crash unless the relevant update notes say so.
- Do not use registry edits, force a graphics API, roll back drivers, or run third-party repair utilities based on the evidence available for this game.
