Don’t Starve: Nintendo Switch Edition brings the original single-player game and its survival loop to a portable system, but the Switch release does not add much that distinguishes it from earlier versions. Its appeal is the challenge and replayability—not Switch-exclusive features.
What is Don’t Starve: Nintendo Switch Edition?
It is the original single-player survival game for Nintendo Switch. You explore a procedurally generated world, gather resources, craft equipment, and manage health, hunger, and sanity while preparing for dangers such as winter. Setbacks are part of the design: learning what went wrong and trying again is central to the experience.
Nintendo’s US listing specifies one player on one system and support for TV, tabletop, and handheld modes. It lists the game as digital software, with Klei Entertainment as publisher and Klei Entertainment Inc. as developer. The US listing gives a 1.6 GB file size and an ESRB rating with crude humor and fantasy violence descriptors; storefront details can vary by region. Nintendo’s US product page also labels it supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Switch.
Is Don’t Starve good on Switch?
The strongest Switch-specific review evidence says the port is an engaging way to play a game with substantial replay value, rather than a substantially reworked edition. In a review dated 25 April 2018, Nintendo Life’s Mitch Vogel wrote: “While it doesn’t do anything to set itself apart, this version of Don’t Starve proves to be just as engaging as its predecessors, while offering lots of bang for your buck.” That assessment makes portability and the included content more relevant than any claim of Switch-only novelty. GameFAQs’ Switch review page displayed an aggregate of 78/100 from 36 critics and a user score of 7.1/10 from 392 user reviews when accessed in 2026. Those figures can change. Its review excerpts reflect a split response: players and critics praise the portable experience, visual style, randomized runs, and addictive survival loop, while others object to repetition, punishing difficulty, or bugs. How hard is it, and who will enjoy it?
Don’t Starve expects you to discover how its systems work rather than follow a gentle, tightly guided path. You will need to gather and craft while keeping survival needs in check, and a poor plan can end a run. The game suits players who find experimentation, self-directed goals, and recovering from failure satisfying. It is a weaker fit if you want a forgiving adventure, steady story progression, or little repetition.

What content does the Switch edition include?
Nintendo’s US and UK descriptions mention Reign of Giants and Shipwrecked. Reign of Giants adds characters, seasons, creatures, biomes, and challenges. Shipwrecked shifts the setting to a tropical archipelago that Wilson explores by land and sea. Nintendo’s UK product page describes both expansions.
Hamlet should not be treated as included in the base-game listing: Nintendo’s US page lists Don’t Starve: Hamlet separately as DLC and dates it 1 October 2020. Klei describes its setting as a tropical jungle town of aristocratic Pigmen. Nintendo’s US Hamlet DLC page and Klei’s official site provide those product details.

Should you buy it on Switch?
Consider the Switch version if you want this demanding survival game in handheld, tabletop, or TV mode and are comfortable with its repeated starts. If you already own Don’t Starve on another platform, the 2018 Switch review gives little reason to expect a substantially different edition; weigh the portability and the listed expansion content against what you already have. The review evidence here dates to the Switch release and is not a current test of patches, performance, or compatibility.
Nintendo identifies the software as a digital product. The available product information does not establish that a physical Switch cartridge is available, so check the relevant regional storefront for current availability and pricing.
