Build the Fire Pit and cooking area in the centre, place a Lightning Rod there immediately, then arrange kitchen, workshop, storage and production zones around a generous expansion area. There is no universally best tile: the right location depends on your characters, travel routes, tolerance for seasonal danger and whether the world is intended for a short survival run or a long-term settlement.

How to choose a base location
Evaluate a candidate site before placing a structure. A good location reduces daily travel without forcing every player to live beside a dangerous set piece. Walk the surrounding area, mark nearby resources and imagine where the base will expand after the first winter. Five questions matter most.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- How many biomes are close? A short walk to grassland, forest, rocky ground, a swamp or a desert is more valuable than a beautiful but isolated clearing.
- Which set pieces are nearby? The Pig King, wormholes, cave entrances, Beefalo herds and the Oasis Desert can each solve a different logistical problem.
- Is there enough flat ground? Every Crock Pot, chest, farm, pen, science machine and path needs room. A site that looks large at day 1 can become cramped once the base is organized.
- How does the site behave by season? Check summer fire risk, winter access to food and fuel, and whether seasonal hazards can reach the buildings.
- Can your group defend and navigate it? A base should have clear entrances, visible landmarks and space to move while carrying items or kiting enemies.
Why border zones are the best default
For most new worlds, choose a flat clearing on the edge where two or more biomes meet. Border locations provide the best compromise between access and safety: wood, grass, rocks, reeds, food sources and special resources are less likely to be a long expedition away. A grassland–forest border is a particularly practical first base because it offers open building space while keeping ordinary logs and grass close.
Do not interpret “border” as “build directly on the biome boundary.” Leave a buffer from hostile terrain, tree clusters and seasonal hazards. The ideal site is close enough to reach several biomes on foot but open enough that structures do not overlap with natural obstacles. A border also gives you multiple routes out of camp if hounds or another threat approaches from one direction.

Comparing common base sites
| Site type | Main advantages | Risks and trade-offs | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open grassland/forest border | Several biomes within walking distance; easy construction; clear sight lines | May lack a unique resource immediately beside camp | Default long-term base, especially for new players |
| Near the Pig King | Convenient gold and meat-trading destination; useful landmark; central early-game position can shorten trips | Nearby terrain may be crowded, and the Pig King does not solve every seasonal or resource need | Early or general-purpose settlement when the surrounding map is well connected |
| Near a wormhole | Fast movement between distant resource regions | Wormhole exits can lead into dangerous terrain; traffic may bring enemies through camp | Worlds with separated resource clusters or teams that travel often |
| Near a cave entrance | Immediate access to the caves; one community account reported daylight reaching through the ceiling, allowing farming, including bees | Cave access can attract threats and the farming observation is community-level, not a guaranteed rule for every map or patch | Players who use caves regularly and have verified the local entrance behavior |
| Oasis Desert | Common summer base choice because the Oasis provides natural protection from burning | Less convenient in other seasons if food, wood or grass are far away; desert travel still requires preparation | Summer-focused camps or worlds where fire protection is the priority |
| Beefalo-adjacent clearing | Early manure and herd access; useful landmark for a first camp | Beefalo can become dangerous during mating season, and the herd can obstruct building or movement | Early-game convenience, provided the actual structures sit a safe distance away |
| Dense forest or swamp | Immediate access to logs or swamp resources | Little open floor space; difficult movement; more fighting for placement and visibility | Temporary resource outpost, not the main settlement |
There is no requirement to place the base beside every landmark. A site near one excellent shortcut can be better than a mediocre location surrounded by several hazards. Choose the position that makes your most frequent trips shorter.
Important neighbours and how to use them
Pig King
A camp near the Pig King is attractive because it gives a reliable destination for trading, a memorable navigation point and a useful early-game centre. Keep the actual buildings on open ground rather than on top of roads, set pieces or narrow clearings. Leave a route between the base and the Pig King wide enough for players to travel without weaving through walls and chests.
Wormholes
A wormhole can turn an inconvenient map into a manageable one. Before committing, enter both ends and inspect where they lead. Record the exits on the map and confirm that neither side deposits players directly into a swamp, hostile set piece or seasonal trap. Build close enough to use the wormhole, but not so close that enemies arriving from an exit walk through your storage area.
Cave entrances
Caves are valuable for exploration, resources and seasonal refuge. A cave entrance beside camp saves repeated hauling trips, but it also concentrates traffic and can complicate defense. Treat the entrance as a separate gateway: keep the main Fire Pit and food stores out of its immediate path, and provide a clear approach for players returning with loot.
Oasis Desert
The Oasis is a strong summer option because it offers natural protection from burning. It is not automatically the best permanent location. Compare the distance to grass, wood, food and fuel before moving the whole settlement. Many teams use an Oasis camp as a seasonal branch while retaining a more central base for the rest of the year.

Beefalo
Beefalo are useful neighbours for manure and early survival, but the herd should not occupy your construction footprint. Set farms and paths outside the animals’ normal movement area, and leave enough room to avoid them when they become aggressive. A nearby herd is an advantage; a camp built inside the herd is a recurring obstruction.

A practical base layout
Divide the settlement into zones instead of placing every structure wherever a player happens to have materials. Zoning makes the base quicker to learn, easier to defend and simpler to expand.
1. Central survival core
Place the Fire Pit in the centre of the main clearing. Put the most-used cooking stations close to it so players can cook, refuel and regroup without crossing the entire settlement. The centre should remain uncluttered: leave a ring of walking space around the fire and avoid filling it with chests or decorative walls.
2. Kitchen and food storage
Group Crock Pots, Ice Boxes and Drying Racks in one kitchen cluster. A Salt Box, additional Ice Boxes and a Bird Cage can share this area when available. Food farms belong around the kitchen, but do not block the approach to the Fire Pit. Keeping ingredients, cooking stations and finished food within a few steps reduces nighttime trips and makes group cooking much faster.
3. Science and workshop zone
Put the Alchemy Engine, Shadow Manipulator and Think Tank in one or two central workshop areas. Surround them with the resource farms and materials they support, but leave a clear lane for players to reach every machine. Science stations should not be scattered around the perimeter; a player should know exactly where to go when a new recipe becomes available.

4. Predictable storage
Keep Storage Chests in a separate, labeled section rather than beside every crafting station. Arrange them in rows with a consistent category order—for example, building materials, food ingredients, tools, weapons, seasonal items and monster resources. A dedicated storage block prevents the kitchen and workshop from turning into impassable piles of containers.
5. Farms, pens and processing
Reserve an outer ring for farms, animal pens and processing structures. Farms need expansion space, and pens need enough room for players to enter without trapping themselves. Place high-traffic processing items, such as Drying Racks, where players can check them on the way to the kitchen rather than at the far edge of camp.
6. Entrances, walls and traps
Give the base one obvious primary entrance and, if the footprint is large, a second emergency exit. A circular plan can put Tooth Traps at the entrance while stone walls protect the remaining perimeter. Walls do not need to form a perfect rectangle: placing them at corners or along roads can create visual landmarks and preserve useful walking routes. Keep traps far enough from the Fire Pit and cooking area that players do not accidentally trigger them while working.
7. Room for future areas
Mark empty plots before building. Potential expansions include a larger farm district, animal pens, extra science machines, a dock and a dedicated summer camp. An unused patch of flat ground is not wasted space; it is insurance against having to demolish a functioning kitchen when the group’s needs change.
Lightning, fire and seasonal protection
Build a Lightning Rod immediately
Place a Lightning Rod in the centre of the base as an early priority. Lightning can destroy an otherwise safe-looking settlement, and the centre gives the rod the best practical coverage for the structures most players use. Do not postpone it until after decorative work; protection is more valuable than appearance.

Prepare for summer
The essential summer defenses listed in the current guide set are an Endothermic Fire Pit and an Ice Flingomatic. Include both in your seasonal plan, and keep combustible structures within the cooling coverage you have verified in your world. The Oasis can provide natural protection from burning, but an Oasis location still needs food, fuel and travel planning.
Prepare for winter
Keep the Fire Pit, fuel storage and cooking stations close together so the group can warm up and eat without long exposed walks. Stockpile fuel and food before winter begins, and avoid placing the camp so far from ordinary wood and grass that every resupply becomes a dangerous expedition.
Think about fire spread
Do not pack every structure tightly around the centre. A little separation creates movement lanes and limits the damage from a single fire. Place decorative or replaceable items farther from the kitchen and keep the most important machines easy to reach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to build first
The following order gives a new settlement a working core before it spends resources on decoration or elaborate defenses.
- Scout the clearing. Confirm nearby biomes, set pieces, food, wood, grass, stone and a route for expansion before committing to the location.
- Place the Fire Pit. Use it as the centre point for the rest of the layout rather than putting it at the edge of camp.
- Build the Alchemy Engine. This unlocks the first group of practical structures and establishes the workshop zone.
- Add Crock Pots. Keep them together near the Fire Pit so cooking and refueling happen in one trip.
- Build an Ice Box. Put it beside the kitchen, with enough room for additional cooling and food-storage structures.
- Construct a Lightning Rod. Make this an early defensive purchase and keep it central.
- Add Storage Chests. Create labeled rows before the base accumulates loose items.
- Expand into farms and processing. Add Drying Racks, food farms and pens only after you have marked their permanent district.
- Prepare for summer. Add an Endothermic Fire Pit and Ice Flingomatic before the hot season, not after the first fire.
- Finish defenses and expansion. Use walls, traps, extra science machines and a dock only when the core remains easy to navigate.
Layout patterns that work for different groups
Compact starter camp
Use a Fire Pit in the middle, a small kitchen on one side, two or three labeled chest rows on another and the Alchemy Engine nearby. This pattern is cheap and easy to rebuild if exploration reveals a better permanent site.

Long-term hub
Use a central survival core with a kitchen district, a workshop district, a storage block and an outer production ring. Keep broad paths between zones and leave at least one complete side of the settlement empty for later structures.
Seasonal or multi-base network
Maintain a central border base for ordinary production and establish a smaller Oasis or cave-adjacent outpost for a specific season or expedition. Duplicate only the essentials—Fire Pit, basic cooking, storage and the seasonal protection you actually need. A satellite camp should reduce travel, not become a second full settlement that consumes all your materials.

Use a controlled entrance, Tooth Traps and stone walls around the perimeter, while keeping the interior open. Put traps where enemies will approach, not where players carry food. Defensive structures should channel threats away from the kitchen and storage rather than forcing teammates through a maze.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Building in a dense forest or swamp: move the main structures to an open border clearing and use the old site as a resource outpost.
- Using every open tile on day one: demolish low-value decoration and reserve a marked expansion plot before adding more farms or pens.
- Scattering crafting stations: consolidate the Alchemy Engine, Shadow Manipulator and Think Tank into a recognizable workshop district.
- Putting storage beside every machine: move chests into labeled rows so paths remain clear and everyone knows where supplies belong.
- Ignoring seasonal threats: install the Lightning Rod early, prepare Endothermic Fire Pit and Ice Flingomatic coverage before summer, and keep winter fuel near the Fire Pit.
- Building directly beside a wormhole, cave or Beefalo: leave a buffer and a separate approach so traffic and hazards do not pass through the living area.
- Choosing a landmark without checking the map: walk both ends of a wormhole, inspect the routes to the Pig King and caves, and verify food and fuel before settling.
- Copying an old blueprint exactly: older community layouts may predate current structures or map behavior. Adapt the shape to the current world and patch.
Newer structures and patch considerations
Update 1.25.0, reported in January 2026, added structures that can be crafted for Pearl after the required conditions: the Tea Shop, Hot Spring, Large Drying Rack, Light Post and Combriner. Several Salt Crystal items are crafted at the Combriner. Treat these as expansion choices rather than reasons to crowd the starter camp; reserve a utility or decorative district where they can be added later.
Community-maintained 2026 version notes also list a June 25 fix for Golf structure rotations and a July 2 fix affecting coals and Mini-Golf over Docks. These details matter if you are designing a dock or recreation area, but they should not dictate the location of the survival core. Verify live patch notes before relying on exact rotation, placement or dock behavior.
The community Wiki’s From Beyond material lists the Perennial Altar, Shallow Grave and Portable Campfire, along with a setting intended to align buildings to a grid. The page does not establish a shipped date for the grid option, so treat its availability as version-dependent and check the in-game settings on your build.

A final site-and-layout checklist
- At least three or four useful biomes are reachable by a short, safe walk.
- The clearing is open, flat and large enough for the planned kitchen, workshop, storage and farms.
- The Pig King, a wormhole, cave entrance, Beefalo or Oasis offers a real logistical benefit rather than merely being nearby.
- The Fire Pit has a central position with clear walking space around it.
- A Lightning Rod is installed early and not hidden outside the main settlement.
- Crock Pots, Ice Boxes, Drying Racks and food farms form a coherent kitchen district.
- Alchemy Engine, Shadow Manipulator and Think Tank share a recognizable workshop area.
- Storage chests are grouped and labeled, with paths that remain usable when the base grows.
- Farms, pens, walls, traps and docks have dedicated plots instead of consuming the central lanes.
- Summer cooling, winter fuel and fire-safe spacing are planned before the season arrives.
- At least one expansion area remains empty.
How to decide between two otherwise good sites
When two clearings appear equal, choose the one that shortens your most frequent route, not the one with the most impressive landmark. A kitchen-focused team should favor food, Beefalo and ordinary fuel; a cave-focused team may accept a longer walk to the surface resources in exchange for a nearby entrance; a summer expedition team may prioritize the Oasis. If the map is dangerous, prefer open sight lines and two escape routes over a slightly shorter trip. The best base is the one your group can resupply, defend and expand without repeatedly crossing hazards.
