For a small Windrose dedicated server, plan on an SSD, a modern quad-core desktop CPU or better, and 8 GB of RAM for two players. The commonly cited tiers are 12 GB for four players and 16 GB for roughly eight players, with some tables extending that tier to 10 players. If the same computer also runs the game client, budget at least 24 GB of total system memory.
Those figures come from hosting guides that attribute their table to the official Windrose dedicated-server guide; the guide page itself was reported as updated on 18 May 2026 for game version 0.10.0.5.120. Treat them as planning values rather than laboratory benchmarks. Your world can need more memory as construction and save data accumulate, even when the player count does not change.

| Concurrent players | Server RAM | CPU guidance | Storage guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 8 GB | At least the two-core, 3.2 GHz reference class; a modern quad-core gives more headroom | About 30–35 GB on an SSD; 35 GB is the commonly repeated baseline | Suitable for a lightly built, small world |
| 4 | 12 GB | Quad-core desktop CPU recommended | About 35–50 GB; use SSD storage | Allows more persistent world data and construction |
| 8 | 16 GB | Quad-core desktop CPU or better, with strong single-thread performance | 50 GB NVMe recommended | Use this as the practical target for an eight-player server |
| About 10 | 16 GB is the reported reference tier | Not separately benchmarked | Not separately stated | The 10-player number is a resource reference, not confirmation that the current client supports 10-player sessions |
The CPU and storage figures are not a promise that every machine in the same class will perform identically. The published material does not provide a benchmark translating the reference Xeon to particular Ryzen or Core models.

How much RAM does a Windrose server need?
Dedicated server only
For a machine used only by the server process, use 8 GB for two players, 12 GB for four, and 16 GB for eight. The same 16 GB tier is sometimes listed for eight to 10 players. Because those numbers are reported through secondary guides rather than a directly verified quotation from the developer, leave additional capacity when your world is heavily built or has a long save history.
Why player count is not the whole calculation
Windrose worlds become larger as players build, explore and accumulate persistent data. One cited guide specifically warns that a world’s footprint can grow over months while the crew remains the same size. A server that ran comfortably with two players at launch can therefore need more memory later. Monitor actual usage during your busiest sessions instead of treating the table as a permanent ceiling.
Hosting and playing on one PC
If the host computer also runs the Windrose client, do not add the client and server figures as if they were interchangeable. A published rule of thumb is at least 24 GB of total RAM: approximately 16 GB for the client and 8 GB for the server. That is a combined-machine minimum for a small session, not a recommendation to run an eight-player world on 24 GB. For larger sessions, size the server tier first and then add the memory your operating system and game client require.

CPU requirements and what matters in practice
The reference specification
The official-style table repeated by hosting guides describes a two-core, 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon Scalable processor from the Sapphire Rapids generation. It is a reference point, not a consumer purchasing list, and no verified benchmark maps it directly to a Ryzen or Intel Core model.

Desktop guidance
Desktop-oriented guides recommend a quad-core processor, with examples around an Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X class or better. Another guide emphasizes single-thread performance over simply adding cores. In practical terms, prioritize a recent CPU with strong per-core speed and stable sustained clocks; extra cores are useful for the operating system and other services, but they do not automatically compensate for weak single-thread performance.
- For two to four players, a modern quad-core desktop processor is a sensible target even though the reference table lists two cores.
- For eight players, avoid low-power parts whose clocks drop under sustained load.
- Do not infer guaranteed performance from the example model names; the available material does not contain a Ryzen/Core equivalence test.
Storage: capacity and drive speed
How much space to reserve
Storage figures vary more than the RAM tiers. The smallest-session guidance ranges from about 30 GB to 35 GB, while the official-style baseline repeated by guides is 35 GB on an SSD. Four-player guidance spans roughly 35–50 GB, and 50 GB on NVMe is recommended for eight players.
| Server size | Minimum planning range | Preferred drive |
|---|---|---|
| 2 players | 30–35 GB | SSD |
| 4 players | 35–50 GB | SSD, with room for save growth |
| 8 players | At least 50 GB | NVMe recommended |
Reserve free space beyond the installation number for world saves, logs, updates and temporary files. A nearly full drive can turn a nominally adequate server into a maintenance problem. Slow disks are also a commonly reported source of stalls, so moving from a hard drive to an SSD, and from SATA SSD to NVMe where practical, is usually more valuable than buying a larger but slower disk.
Supported operating systems: Windows is documented; Linux needs verification
Windows support
The documented operating-system requirement is 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. Older setup material describes the native dedicated server as Windows-only and does not provide a Linux binary.

What changed with the June 2026 hotfix
A fan-maintained wiki reports that Hotfix 0.10.0.7, dated 25 June 2026, added official Docker images for Linux server support. A hosting guide names the image windroseserver/windroseserver:latest. This Linux route is reported by secondary sources and was not confirmed on the primary guide page; the primary snapshot predates the hotfix. Before deploying on Linux, open the current DedicatedServer.md shipped with the server and confirm that Docker support, the image name and the required configuration still apply. Do not assume that a Windows-only guide from May 2026 reflects the post-hotfix state.
Choosing between Windows and Docker
- Choose 64-bit Windows when you want the operating system explicitly documented in the older guide and the least ambiguity during setup.
- Choose Linux only after the current documentation confirms the Docker image and startup procedure for your game version.
- Keep the image tag and game version aligned with the documentation. A mutable tag such as
:latestcan change, so record the version you deploy and test updates before applying them to a live world.
Installing the dedicated server
Windrose distributes the server as a free Steam tool. The Steam application ID is 4129620, and the installation directory includes DedicatedServer.md. Use that file as the authoritative, version-specific setup reference.
- Install the tool. In the Steam client, open the Library, filter the list to Tools, and install Windrose Dedicated Server. If you use SteamCMD, select application ID
4129620with your normal SteamCMD installation workflow. - Open the server root. Locate the tool’s installation folder and read
DedicatedServer.mdbefore launching anything. It is the place to verify executable names, configuration keys, save locations and network settings for your build. - Allocate the machine. Match RAM and storage to the intended player tier, then leave operating-system headroom. If the PC will also run the client, use the 24 GB combined-memory rule only for a small server and increase it for larger worlds.
- Create or select the world. Follow the document’s instructions for selecting a save and setting the world options. Do not copy configuration keys from an older guide unless they are present in the version of
DedicatedServer.mdinstalled with your tool. - Start and test locally. Launch the server using the method documented for your version, connect from the same network, and verify that the world loads and saves correctly before inviting remote players.
- Test remote access and updates. Apply the firewall and network directions in the shipped guide, then test from an outside connection. Back up the world before changing the server version or replacing a Docker image.
The exact command-line switches and network-port values are version-sensitive and are not established in the available requirements summaries, so use the shipped guide rather than a copied command from an older post.
Bandwidth and network planning
Some guides suggest roughly 20 Mbps of upload capacity for a stable server, but that figure is not attributed to a verified official measurement. Treat it as a conservative planning target, not a guaranteed minimum. Actual demand depends on player activity, world state and update behavior. Prefer a wired connection, avoid saturating the uplink with unrelated uploads, and watch for packet loss or upload contention during a busy session.

Picking a specification for your situation
Two-player private world
Start with 8 GB dedicated-server RAM, a modern quad-core CPU, and 35 GB of SSD space. If the same PC runs the game, plan for at least 24 GB total RAM rather than 8 GB total.
Four-player persistent world
Use 12 GB for the server and reserve 35–50 GB on an SSD. Choose a CPU with good single-thread performance and leave room for save growth instead of filling the drive to its nominal capacity.
Eight-player community server
Target 16 GB of server RAM, a quad-core-or-better CPU with strong per-core performance, and at least 50 GB on NVMe. Recheck memory after the world has been active for several weeks; construction growth can push a once-comfortable allocation higher.

The 16 GB figure sometimes paired with 10 players is a resource reference. It should not be read as confirmation that the current Windrose client or session rules support 10 concurrent players. Verify the supported player limit in the current game documentation before buying hardware for that number.

Troubleshooting requirement-related problems
The server runs out of memory or crashes after the world grows
Check usage during the busiest session and after loading the largest save. Increase RAM to the next tier, keep the operating system from swapping, and remove unnecessary background services. Do not judge capacity solely from an empty new world.
Players see stutter or long save pauses
Confirm that the server is on SSD storage and, for an eight-player target, preferably NVMe. Check whether the drive is nearly full. If storage is healthy, examine CPU per-core utilization; a high total-core percentage is not required for one busy game thread to become the bottleneck.
A Linux container will not start
First establish whether your installed game build is newer than the documentation that came with the tool. Because Docker support was reported in a June 2026 hotfix while the cited official guide was updated in May, an outdated image or guide can produce contradictory instructions. Re-read the current DedicatedServer.md, confirm the image name and configuration, and fall back to documented Windows hosting if Linux support is not confirmed for your version.
Recommended Free Tools
The installation fills the disk
Measure the installation, save files and logs separately, then move the server to a larger SSD/NVMe volume or expand the volume before it reaches capacity. Keep backups outside the live server directory and retain free space for updates.
Remote players cannot connect
Use the network and firewall checklist in the installed guide, verify that the server is listening on the configured interface, and test from a network that is not the host’s local LAN. Avoid changing ports or launch parameters based on an unrelated version guide.
Keeping the requirements current
The requirements are unusually sensitive to version changes. The cited official guide snapshot was for version 0.10.0.5.120 on 18 May 2026, while the reported Docker change arrived in Hotfix 0.10.0.7 on 25 June 2026. Before every major update, compare the new DedicatedServer.md with your existing allocation, confirm operating-system support, and back up the world. Recheck RAM after substantial building or a large change in the active player count.
Bottom line
For most self-hosted Windrose worlds, 8 GB RAM for two players, 12 GB for four, and 16 GB for eight are sound starting points, paired with SSD storage and a strong quad-core CPU. Use 24 GB total when one PC hosts and plays a small session. Windows 10/11 64-bit is the documented path; Linux Docker support is a newer, secondary-reported feature that must be verified in the current server documentation before deployment.
