The reliable way to survive your first winter in Don’t Starve Together is to finish preparation during autumn. On default settings, winter begins on day 21, so use the first 10–15 days to map nearby terrain, establish a fire-pit base, stabilize food, and make a heated Thermal Stone, insulating clothing, armor, a weapon, healing supplies, and an emergency-fire plan.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Don't Starve Together servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Winter is not won by staying beside the base. You survive by leaving with enough heat and fuel, returning before your temperature becomes critical, and having a response ready for Hounds and other threats. The plan below turns those priorities into a day-by-day route for a new world.

On the default world settings, winter starts on day 21. The winter reference describes a 15-day season ending after day 35; guides that count the next seasonal transition describe the boundary as day 36. Treat day 21 as the practical start and prepare as though the change can arrive at the beginning of that day. World settings can alter seasonal timing, so do not build your entire plan around one exact calendar if the host has changed the defaults.
A safe target is to have the core kit finished by roughly day 10 to day 15. Seasonal preparation guidance recommends getting ready about ten days before a change. That buffer gives you time to replace a failed tool, gather missing fuel, recover from a bad fight, or move camp without entering winter with empty meters.

| Calendar point | What it means | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Exploration and basic resource collection | Map enough territory to identify a safe base area and nearby food, wood, grass, twigs, flint, logs and rocks. |
| Days 4–7 | Infrastructure | Place science equipment and a permanent fire pit, then establish a repeatable travel loop. |
| Days 8–12 | Food preservation and material gathering | Add a crock pot or drying racks, collect silk and wool where it is safe, and start building reserves. |
| Days 13–18 | Winter equipment | Craft and heat a Thermal Stone, obtain insulation, and finish armor, a weapon, healing items and fire fuel. |
| Days 19–20 | Risk reduction | Stop optional fights and long expeditions. Top up food, health, sanity and fuel, and make the Hound and revival plans reachable. |
| Day 21 onward | Winter operations | Travel with a heated stone and emergency-fire materials, monitor temperature and return before the cold becomes critical. |
Your first three days: explore without spending your future
Gather the universal starter materials
Collect grass, twigs, flint, logs, rocks, berries and carrots while moving through the opening area. These materials unlock tools, torches, science equipment, fire structures and the first food reserve. Take enough to make replacements; a single broken tool can turn a routine trip into a night stranded away from camp.
Explore broadly rather than committing immediately to one attractive clearing. You are looking for a region that connects several resource routes, not a perfect landmark. Note where wood, grass, twigs, rocks and edible plants are concentrated, and identify Beefalo or Pig areas that could support later defense and resource gathering.
Make a torch before you need one
A torch is the emergency answer to an unexpected night away from camp. Make one before darkness, and use it to keep moving toward a known safe area instead of gambling on an unplanned stop. A torch is not a substitute for a base fire: it gives you mobility, while a campfire supports early cooking and night work.
Unlock science and a permanent fire
Use your early materials to unlock science and place the structures that make the settlement sustainable. A campfire is useful for immediate cooking and nighttime activity, but a fire pit should become the base centerpiece because it is the durable fire source you can return to and relight.

Choosing a base that remains useful in winter
Prioritize routes, not a single resource node
A strong beginner base has central access to renewable resources, food routes, Beefalo or Pig areas, and the paths you expect to travel. Central placement shortens winter trips, which reduces the time your Thermal Stone must protect you and makes it easier to retreat when a meter drops or a Hound warning begins.
Leave room around the fire pit for movement, storage and a retreat path. Do not build directly inside a dangerous herd. Beefalo and other creatures can help with threats, but a base placed in the middle of a herd can turn routine work into an involuntary fight. Keep enough open ground to run past the base without getting trapped.
Build around a repeatable travel loop
Before winter, walk the nearby circuit you will use for wood, grass, twigs, rocks and food. A route that begins and ends at the fire pit is safer than a series of improvised expeditions. Mark mentally where you can make a fire if the temperature falls faster than expected, and avoid routes that force you to cross a dangerous area while carrying your entire food reserve.
Make food dependable before the temperature falls
Use a crock pot to turn mixed ingredients into meals
A crock pot should be an early autumn objective when resources allow. It converts otherwise uneven ingredients into more dependable hunger supplies, which matters when winter travel makes scattered berries and carrots harder to rely on. Keep enough ordinary food for the construction period, then use the crock pot to create meals that can be carried on expeditions and eaten before hunger reaches a dangerous level.

Add drying racks for long-lived food
Drying racks preserve meat and extend its value. The resulting jerky supports hunger while also helping sanity, making racks useful for two meters at once. Start drying as soon as you can spare the materials rather than waiting for winter; preservation takes time, and a stockpile made in the last two days leaves no margin for a failed hunt or an interrupted cooking run.
Carry reserves instead of one perfect meal
Winter preparation is a reserve problem. Keep ordinary food for emergency travel, preserved food for routine trips and healing ingredients separate from both. Avoid entering the season with every meter nearly empty: a cold expedition, a Hound chase or a nighttime error can consume food faster than expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe minimum winter kit
The minimum reliable kit is a heated Thermal Stone, an emergency source of fire, and one insulating garment. The official winter guidance specifically names a Beefalo Hat, Winter Hat or Puffy Vest as suitable insulation and advises carrying enough fuel while exploring. The Thermal Stone must be heated at a fire before departure; it does not remain warm indefinitely, so watch the character temperature indicator instead of assuming the stone will last for the whole trip.
Thermal Stone procedure
- Bring the Thermal Stone to the fire pit while you prepare to leave.
- Heat it fully at the fire before starting the expedition.
- Carry fuel that can make an emergency fire if the trip takes longer than planned.
- Check the temperature indicator during travel and turn back or make a fire before the cold becomes critical.
- Reheat the stone whenever you return to base rather than leaving the next trip to chance.
Choosing an insulating garment
Make the first warm item you can obtain safely, then upgrade when the material and combat risk are reasonable. A Winter Hat is an accessible first target when Beefalo wool and silk are available. A Beefalo Hat offers stronger insulation, but collecting its materials can be more difficult and dangerous. A Puffy Vest is another insulating option named in the official guidance; its relative insulation and material requirements are not established here, so choose it according to what your character and team can obtain without sacrificing food, armor or revival supplies.

| Item | Best use for a beginner | Trade-off to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Hat | First insulation target when its wool and silk are safely available. | It is a practical early option; exact insulation values are not stated. |
| Beefalo Hat | Upgrade for stronger insulation once Beefalo resources can be collected safely. | Resource collection is more difficult; do not risk a death for an upgrade when a basic hat is available. |
| Puffy Vest | Alternative insulating garment when your character and team can craft it. | Relative insulation and material requirements are not stated; compare it with the resources and equipment you already have. |
When comparing any two options, use five questions: how much insulation or heat duration it provides, how safely its materials can be obtained, how many inventory slots it costs, whether it occupies a head or body equipment slot, and whether making it interferes with your food, combat or revival plan. A nominally better item is not better if obtaining it costs the health and healing supplies you need for winter.
Armor, weapon and healing supplies
Finish basic armor and a weapon before day 21. They are not only for planned combat: Hounds can arrive while you are returning from a resource run, and a defensive response is safer when the equipment is already on hand. Keep healing ingredients available and avoid using the final days before winter on optional fights that consume health, armor durability or recovery items.
Keeping warm while exploring
Winter travel works when you manage temperature as actively as hunger. Wear an insulating garment, leave with a heated Thermal Stone, and carry enough fuel to create a fire if the trip runs long. The stone buys time; it does not eliminate the need to plan a route and a return.
- Check your food, health, sanity, stone temperature and fuel before leaving.
- Choose the shortest route that accomplishes the task instead of adding optional resource stops.
- Watch the temperature indicator throughout the trip, especially after combat or detours.
- If the indicator approaches a dangerous level, stop at a prepared fire or return to the base rather than continuing for one more item.
- Do not begin a long expedition immediately before an expected Hound attack or at the end of the day when a safe return is uncertain.
Keep emergency-fire materials in the expedition inventory, not buried in storage. A fire is useful only if you can make it before the cold overwhelms you. Reheat the stone at the fire pit whenever you return, and refill your fuel reserve before leaving again.

How to survive Hounds as a beginner
Recognize the warning and move early
Learn the Hound warning sound. When it begins, stop nonessential work, equip your armor and weapon, and move toward the prepared response point. Fighting beside storage, crops or a tightly packed base makes every mistake more expensive; a planned location gives you space to run and keeps the pack away from irreplaceable supplies.
Use creatures as a distraction when a direct fight is unsafe
If your combat equipment or health is inadequate, lead Hounds toward Spiders, Pigs or Beefalo. The newbie guidance recommends these creatures as alternatives to taking the pack alone, and the getting-started guidance specifically notes that Beefalo can help handle Hounds. Do not enter a dangerous herd blindly: leave room to retreat, and do not sacrifice your character merely to force a distraction.
Protect flammable structures
If fire-producing enemies are involved, pull them away from trees, chests, crops and other flammable objects before finishing the fight. Keep a route to the fire pit and avoid letting the battle happen where a single burning enemy can destroy the preparation that winter depends on.
Health, sanity and recovery planning
Manage all three meters together
The official beginner guidance treats hunger, health and sanity as a combined survival problem. Preserved food helps hunger and, in the case of jerky, can also support sanity. Safe daytime activities, cooked or preserved food and the sanity-supporting options available at your character’s technology tier can help when sanity falls. Do not solve hunger by spending the health or sanity needed to reach the next resource route.
Keep a revival option available
Recognized revival options include Touch Stones, Meat Effigies and Telltale Hearts. Decide before winter which option your world and team can use, then keep its location or required supplies known to everyone. In multiplayer, tell teammates where the recovery item is and keep the materials for a Telltale Heart available when practical. A revival plan prevents one cold mistake, Hound attack or nighttime error from erasing the entire autumn setup.
Final pre-winter audit
Use the last two autumn days to remove uncertainty rather than chase optional upgrades. Your base and team should be able to answer “yes” to each check below:
- A fire pit is established in a central, retreat-friendly location.
- Wood and other fire fuel are stocked for both normal work and emergencies.
- Food is available in preserved and carryable forms, with crock-pot meals or dried meat ready for trips.
- Each traveler has a heated Thermal Stone and an insulating garment.
- Armor, a weapon and healing supplies are ready before the next Hound warning.
- Everyone knows the planned Hound distraction area and can reach it without running through the base.
- A Touch Stone, Meat Effigy or Telltale Heart plan exists where the team can find it.
- Health, hunger and sanity are topped up before departure.
From day 21 onward, make shorter trips, carry emergency-fire materials and return before the temperature indicator reaches a critical state. Winter becomes manageable when every expedition has heat, food, a retreat route and a recovery plan before it starts.
