Where to find armadillos
Search Savanna and Badlands biomes
Travel through Savanna or Badlands terrain and look for the passive mob on the ground. These are the biomes named in Mojang’s Java 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 Armored Paws release notes. The principal challenge is reaching the correct biome; armadillos are passive and do not hunt the player.
Biome names can vary in appearance because terrain generation produces different hills, plateaus, and vegetation. Use your normal exploration method for locating a Savanna or Badlands area, then search open ground rather than expecting armadillos in every warm or dry biome.

Plan for a safe approach
Approach at a walk. Sprinting is one of the behaviors that can make an armadillo roll up, which prevents it from walking or eating while it remains alert. Keep hostile undead mobs away from the area and avoid arriving on a mount or in a vehicle if you want the animals to stay unrolled.
Can you tame an armadillo?
“Taming” is common player shorthand, but it is not the documented mechanic. The cited official notes call the armadillo a new passive mob and explain that Spider Eyes tempt it and allow two adults to breed. They do not say an armadillo can be assigned to a player, follow an owner, sit, or be claimed like a tamed wolf.
Attract an armadillo with Spider Eyes
- Hold a Spider Eye in your hand.
- Walk slowly toward an unrolled armadillo.
- Keep the Spider Eye selected while positioning the animal where you want it.
This attraction is useful for moving armadillos into a protected enclosure or bringing two adults together. It should not be described as permanent taming: the documented result is temptation and breeding, not ownership.
Breed two adults
- Bring two adult armadillos close together using Spider Eyes.
- Feed both adults Spider Eyes.
- After they enter breeding behavior, a baby armadillo is produced.
Feed a Spider Eye to a baby to accelerate its growth. If you are building a scute supply, keep the adults and young in an enclosure that prevents escapes while leaving enough room for them to move and detect threats normally.
How to get armadillo scutes
Wait for periodic drops
Mojang’s release notes state that armadillos drop scutes periodically. The notes do not publish a numeric interval, a guaranteed number per drop, or a fixed farm rate. Treat a periodic drop as an ongoing source rather than a timed promise: you cannot calculate an exact number of scutes per minute from the cited documentation.
Rank #2
Brush an armadillo
Brushing is the direct, player-controlled method. Bring a brush to an armadillo and use it while the animal is accessible. The release notes confirm that scutes can be obtained when an armadillo is brushed, but they do not establish a guaranteed yield for every brush. Collect the drops on the ground and repeat as the brush and animal permit.

Use a dispenser in Bedrock
Bedrock’s Armored Paws notes specifically add that dispensers can brush scutes off armadillos. This allows a redstone setup to activate brushing without a player holding the brush continuously. Build the mechanism around the armadillo’s actual position, keep the animal protected from threats, and monitor the collection area. The documentation still does not provide a fixed per-activation yield or a universal production rate.
Why a precise scute timer is unsafe to promise
Guides that state “one scute every exact number of seconds” or “one guaranteed scute per brush” go beyond the cited release notes. Drop behavior and implementation can also change between versions. If you are planning storage, breeding space, or a Wolf Armor project, allow a buffer and measure your own current version rather than designing around an unverified number.
Why armadillos roll up
Threats that trigger the shell
An armadillo can roll up when it detects several kinds of danger:
- A player who is sprinting.
- A player riding or using a vehicle.
- An undead mob nearby.
- A mob or player that recently attacked it.
The shell reduces incoming damage. While rolled, the armadillo cannot walk or eat and continues scanning for threats. Remove the trigger instead of trying to force-feed or move it during this state.

When it will not roll
The official notes also describe situations in which it does not roll: while fleeing, in water, in the air, or on a lead. These exceptions are useful for understanding behavior, but they are not a reason to expose the animal to hazards. Water and falls can create their own dangers, and a lead does not replace a secure enclosure.
How it unrolls
Once no threat is detected, an armadillo unrolls after roughly four seconds. The timing is approximate, not a published frame-perfect guarantee. If it remains curled, check for a sprinting player, a nearby vehicle or rider, an undead mob, or an entity that recently attacked it before waiting longer.
Safe handling procedure
- Stop sprinting before entering the enclosure.
- Dismount and leave vehicles outside the enclosure.
- Remove undead mobs and prevent new hostile mobs from approaching.
- Do not attack the armadillo or let another mob hit it.
- Wait for the threat scan to clear, then approach with a Spider Eye or brush.
Unrolled armadillos have an additional defensive effect: spiders and cave spiders flee from them. That can help protect an enclosure, but it does not make the armadillo invulnerable or replace lighting and perimeter defenses.
Using scutes for Wolf Armor
Craft Wolf Armor
Scutes are the material used to craft Wolf Armor. Open the crafting interface and use the Wolf Armor recipe available in your game version; the recipe book can show the current arrangement once you have the required materials. The official Java notes state directly that armadillo scutes can be used to craft Wolf Armor.

Wolf Armor is designed for a tamed adult wolf. It protects that wolf from most damage until the armor’s durability is exhausted. Because the armor belongs to the wolf rather than the player, keep the animal nearby while you equip, repair, or remove it.

Equip and manage the armor
Only the wolf’s owner can equip, repair, or shear its Wolf Armor. If interaction fails, confirm that you are the player who tamed the wolf and that it is an adult. Shears remove the armor when used by the owner, allowing you to recover the wolf without destroying the equipment through ordinary damage.
Repair with more scutes
Scutes repair equipped Wolf Armor. In Bedrock documentation, Mojang also describes an anvil repair path. This gives Bedrock players two documented approaches: repair the armor while it is equipped on the owned wolf, or use an anvil as described for that edition. The cited Java notes establish equipped-wolf repair but do not add the same anvil detail, so do not assume every repair interface behaves identically across editions.
Dye the armor
Wolf Armor can be dyed similarly to leather armor. Dyeing changes its appearance without changing the armadillo’s behavior or the wolf-ownership requirement. Plan your scute collection before making multiple colored sets, because the cited notes do not give a numeric scute yield or drop schedule.

A practical armadillo-to-Wolf-Armor workflow
- Locate a biome: travel to a Savanna or Badlands and search open ground.
- Secure the area: light and enclose the site, keep undead mobs away, and leave vehicles outside.
- Move armadillos carefully: hold Spider Eyes and walk; do not sprint toward them.
- Start breeding: feed Spider Eyes to two adults, then feed the baby to accelerate growth if needed.
- Collect scutes: allow periodic drops, brush animals, or use a Bedrock dispenser setup.
- Craft the armor: use the current Wolf Armor recipe in the crafting interface.
- Equip your wolf: interact as the wolf’s owner with a tamed adult wolf.
- Maintain durability: use additional scutes to repair equipped armor; in Bedrock, use the documented anvil route when that is more convenient.
- Remove or recolor: the owner can shear the armor off, and dye can change its appearance like leather armor.
Troubleshooting common problems
The armadillo will not eat
Check that you are holding Spider Eyes, that the animal is an adult when attempting to breed, and that it is not rolled up. A curled armadillo cannot eat; clear sprinting players, vehicles, undead mobs, and recent attacks, then wait about four seconds for it to unroll.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteNo scute appears after brushing
Brushing is documented as a source, but the release notes do not promise a fixed yield on every use. Confirm that the brush connected with the armadillo, collect drops around its feet, and allow for version-specific behavior rather than assuming a guaranteed item each time.
The armadillo stays curled
Look beyond the enclosure: an undead mob, a rider, a vehicle, a sprinting player, or an entity that recently attacked the armadillo may still be detected. Remove the cause and wait for the approximate four-second threat-free period.
The Wolf Armor interaction fails
Only the wolf’s owner can equip, repair, or shear the armor, and the target must be a tamed adult wolf. If another player owns the wolf, that player must perform the interaction.
What changed with Armored Paws
Mojang’s 2024 Java 1.20.5 notes introduced the armadillo alongside eight new wolf variants associated with different biomes. The same release family added the scute-and-Wolf-Armor system described here. Those variants and the armor give exploration in dry biomes a practical purpose beyond collecting a new mob.
Because Minecraft receives updates independently on Java and Bedrock, use the release number as part of any troubleshooting report. A mechanic documented for Java 1.20.5 or Bedrock 1.20.80 may be revised in a later release, even when the broad feature remains available.
