There is no universally best Don’t Starve Together character. The right survivor depends on whether you need a safe learner, a boss fighter, a farmer, a base engineer, a healer or a specialist who changes the game’s normal rules. The current roster reference lists 19 playable survivor forms, each with a distinct perk package, cost and learning curve.

For a first world, Wilson is the clearest baseline and Wendy is the most forgiving combat choice. Experienced players can turn Wolfgang, WX-78, Maxwell or Wanda into exceptional specialists, while Wortox, Winona, Wickerbottom and Warly can raise an entire co-op team’s capability. Use the comparisons below to match a character to your world stage, food supply, team composition and tolerance for risk.

How to choose a survivor
Judge a character on more than damage. A high-damage survivor may consume food too quickly, while a support character may be stronger for a four-player base than for a solo run. The following axes expose the trade-offs that a simple tier list hides.
| Decision axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Do you want combat, exploration, farming, construction, healing or faction play? | Every perk package favors a different job, and forcing a character into another job wastes its advantage. |
| Solo or co-op value | Does the perk help only its owner, or can it protect and supply others? | Abigail, Wortox souls, Warly dishes, Winona structures and Wickerbottom books become more valuable as a team grows. |
| Resource burden | Can your group reliably provide the food, gears, souls, meat or ingredients the survivor needs? | Wolfgang, Warly, Wortox and Wigfrid are powerful only when their economies are maintained. |
| Survivability and recovery | What happens after a mistake? | Wendy delegates danger to Abigail, while Wanda and Wes have unusually punishing failure states. |
| Setup time | Is the character useful immediately, or after a base and supply chain exist? | Wilson and Wigfrid start ready; Wurt and Winona need infrastructure before their full value appears. |
| Mechanical complexity | How many meters, transformations, recipes or timing windows must you manage? | Simple survivors let beginners learn the world; complex survivors reward deliberate planning. |
| Rule changes | Does the character alter normal food, sleep, sanity, health or faction rules? | These changes can be a major strength, but they also invalidate habits learned on another survivor. |

Perks and playstyles, character by character
Wilson: the baseline scientist
Wilson is the reference point for learning The Constant. His beard supplies insulation and can be shaved for beefalo wool, and he carries no major downside that changes ordinary survival rules. He does not outperform a specialist, but that is precisely his strength: you can learn hunger, sanity, seasons, combat and base construction without managing a second resource system. Choose Wilson when you are still discovering recipes, map hazards or seasonal preparation, or when a team needs a flexible player who can fill any ordinary task.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Willow: fire, light and shadow control
Willow resists fire and provides reliable lighting, while Bernie gives her a companion and anti-shadow utility. Her relationship with darkness is less forgiving: cold and dark conditions can put pressure on sanity, so carrying thermal gear and planning light sources matters. She suits players who already understand fire safety and want to make night travel, shadow encounters and sanity management part of their toolkit rather than treating them as emergencies.
Wolfgang: the food-fueled powerhouse
Wolfgang reaches Mighty form when his hunger is full, gaining higher damage, health and attack speed. That profile makes him one of the most direct boss specialists. The price is a demanding food schedule: he eats quickly, and his Wimpy state leaves him fragile. A solo Wolfgang must secure a dependable farm or hunting loop before taking major fights. In co-op, assign someone to food production and Wolfgang can concentrate on damage windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWendy: Abigail does the dangerous work
Wendy has lower personal damage, but Abigail can handle groups of creatures and much of the routine clearing. Wendy must collect Mourning Glory to revive her sister, so the companion is powerful rather than free. This division of labor is forgiving for beginners: keep Wendy out of the center of a fight, direct Abigail toward swarms and learn enemy patterns from a safer distance. She is also valuable to teams that need dependable area clearing without dedicating the main fighter to every small battle.
WX-78: a machine that grows with the world
Gears permanently improve WX-78’s health, hunger and sanity, and circuits let you customize the machine for a particular role. Lightning can charge WX-78, improving movement and providing light. Rain is the defining hazard, so waterproofing and storm planning are not optional. The character starts weaker than a finished build, then scales into a highly individualized survivor. WX-78 rewards players who explore for upgrades and are comfortable making a long-term investment.

Wickerbottom: books, knowledge and early technology
Wickerbottom’s tomes can induce sleep, accelerate plant growth and produce other powerful effects. She can also prototype many recipes without first building the usual station, shortening a new base’s technology curve. She cannot sleep and requires fresh food, which makes spoilage control and sanity planning central. In a prepared co-op base she can turn books into team-wide action; in an unplanned solo start, the same strengths can be wasted while you struggle to maintain food quality.
Woodie: choose a form for the job
Woodie’s axe Lucy never wears out. His Werebeaver form excels at gathering, Weremoose is built for fighting and Weregoose travels quickly. Transformations drain sanity and restrict crafting, so changing form is a deliberate work window rather than a button to press in every situation. A strong Woodie player schedules a gathering trip, a combat trip or a travel trip, then returns to normal form before needing detailed inventory management or construction.

Wes’s balloons are his distinctive tool, but his reduced health, hunger, sanity and damage make ordinary survival substantially harder. He is not a beginner alternative and does not compensate for his penalties with a hidden power spike. Pick Wes when the basic game is already familiar and you want to impose a challenge on yourself, practice efficient routes or give an experienced group a deliberately difficult role.
Maxwell: remote labor through shadows
Maxwell uses Codex Umbra to summon shadow workers for gathering and shadow duelists for combat. The assistants let one player cover several jobs and keep distance from danger. Summoning costs sanity and his low health leaves little room for mistakes, so Maxwell should avoid trading blows and should maintain a reliable sanity plan. He is strongest when the player controls positioning, assigns assistants to safe tasks and uses the extra labor to accelerate a base.

Wigfrid: combat gear with a meat-only economy
Wigfrid starts equipped for battle, heals health and sanity through combat and can craft Battle Songs that support a team. Her central restriction is diet: she can eat only meat-based food. That makes a hunting, livestock or monster-meat pipeline essential, especially in winter or on a fresh server. If the group can supply her, she is an immediately effective front-line fighter; if it cannot, her starting gear will not solve the food problem.
Webber: build a spider faction
Webber can befriend spiders, establish Spiderdens and grow a colony that supplies silk, glands and monster meat. The same faction identity changes social geography: pigs and other villagers are hostile, so pig settlements are no longer neutral sources of safety or trade. Webber excels when the team chooses a base location and battle plan that accommodate spiders. He is a specialist economy character, not a drop-in replacement for a conventional town-building survivor.
Winona: engineering the base and boss arena
Winona works faster and can build generators, catapults, spotlights and sewing tape. Those structures turn a prepared base or boss arena into a defensive system rather than a collection of individual fighters. Her value is proportional to the resources the team is willing to invest in engineering; a nomadic group gets less from her than a settled one. Start gathering materials early if you want her machines online for a major fight.
Warly: portable cooking and coordinated buffs
Warly carries a Portable Crock Pot and can prepare exclusive dishes that grant team buffs. The trade-off is repetition: eating the same dishes repeatedly creates hunger and sanity penalties, so his menu must rotate. Warly is best when several players share ingredient planning and agree on which boss or expedition buffs matter. He is less comfortable in a food-poor solo world where you cannot maintain variety.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Wortox: souls as healing and movement currency
Wortox collects souls that can heal allies and power short or long teleports. That makes him an exceptional emergency responder: he can restore a teammate, cross dangerous terrain or extract someone from a bad fight. Ordinary food is only half as effective for him, and soul storage is capped, so he must manage two separate economies instead of relying on meals alone. His greatest contribution appears in co-op, where timely healing and repositioning prevent deaths.
Wormwood: direct planting with serious medical limits
Wormwood can plant directly from inventory, gains sanity around growing plants and crafts living-plant gear. These perks make him efficient at establishing farms and gathering systems. Food does not heal him, however, and fire is especially dangerous, so ordinary recovery habits fail. Pair Wormwood with a healer or another source of non-food recovery, and keep burn hazards away from his farming area. He suits players who enjoy turning the map into a managed garden.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Wurt: invest in a Merm kingdom
Wurt recruits Merms and can crown a Merm King, unlocking major faction buffs once the required setup is complete. She is vegetarian and pigs are hostile, so both diet and settlement choice differ from a conventional run. Her early game is investment-heavy: gather the materials for the faction before expecting a payoff. In a long co-op world, a mature Merm force can provide strong protection and labor; in a short expedition, the setup may never repay its cost.
Walter: scout from a distance
Walter’s slingshot supplies early ranged pressure, while Woby provides storage and can be mounted. Darkness does not reduce his sanity, which helps with night exploration, but taking damage does reduce it, making careless hits especially costly. He is a good fit for players who prefer kiting, scouting and mapping over standing in melee range. Keep distance, use Woby to extend carrying capacity and treat every hit as both a health and sanity problem.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Wanda: mastery of age and time
Wanda’s age replaces a normal health bar. Her watches can heal, teleport and create very high damage opportunities, but she cannot use ordinary healing in the usual way. Reaching maximum age is fatal, so every fight and travel decision has a timer attached. Wanda is extraordinarily powerful in expert hands that track watch charges and age, yet unforgiving for anyone who improvises. Choose her after you understand the map, encounter timing and resource routes.
Wonkey: an emergent Moon Quay transformation
Wonkey is not a standard character-select option. Collecting ten Accursed Trinkets from Moon Quay can trigger the transformation, which increases sprinting speed and changes faction relations while disabling the original survivor’s special abilities. Treat it as an experimental travel form: useful for movement and novel interactions, but not a way to retain a main character’s complete perk package. Because it is an emergent transformation, plan around what you lose as well as what you gain.
Best choices for common goals
If you are learning the game
Choose Wilson to learn the full survival loop without an extra penalty system. Choose Wendy if early combat is the obstacle and you want Abigail to absorb much of the danger. Both let you study seasons, food preservation and base layout before specializing.
If you want solo power
Wolfgang offers the clearest damage ceiling when food is secure. WX-78 becomes more capable over a long world through gears and circuits. Maxwell can multiply your labor, but only if you protect his low health and manage sanity. Wanda can exceed all three in burst potential, though her age system demands expert execution.
If your team needs a specific service
- Healing and rescue: Wortox.
- Base machines and arena defenses: Winona.
- Books and accelerated technology: Wickerbottom.
- Prepared meals and buffs: Warly.
- Front-line combat and team songs: Wigfrid.
- Faction armies: Webber for spiders or Wurt for Merms.
If you prefer exploration
Walter combines ranged play with Woby’s storage and mounting. Woodie’s Weregoose form covers rapid travel, while Wortox can teleport across dangerous routes. Wonkey is a specialized Moon Quay option when movement speed matters more than retaining the original survivor’s powers.
Version notes and roster accuracy
