Fantasy Skies is a Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge skyblock modpack built around quests that send you through different dimensions. You begin on a small void-island settlement centered on a tree, establish renewable resources, follow the quest book to unlock the next objectives, and gradually work toward returning to the overworld and rebuilding civilization. The CurseForge project listing identifies release 1.5.0, dated January 19, 2024, with a matching 1.20 server-pack file. It describes more than 450 mods and 250+ quests, so a successful playthrough depends less on memorizing a single recipe chain and more on keeping the quest book, storage, infrastructure and expedition preparation organized.

This guide explains a reliable way to approach the opening island, how to treat the dimension progression without inventing an official route that the project has not published, what the major systems are likely to contribute, and how to prepare a multiplayer server. It also separates confirmed pack information from practical advice, especially around RAM: the project listing does not publish an authoritative memory requirement.

What Fantasy Skies is and how its progression works
Fantasy Skies is a void-based, quest-led pack for Minecraft 1.20.1 running on Forge. Its story premise places the player in a void dimension after being trapped by the Leviathan. The starting island is built around a central tree, and the long-term objective is to travel through several dimensions, eventually return to the overworld and rebuild civilization.
The listing describes the pack as combining dimension quest-based progression, custom loot-crate rewards, lunar events and enhanced combat mechanics. In practical terms, that means the quest book is your navigation system, while exploration, combat preparation and resource automation determine whether you can safely act on the next quest.

| Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge | Install the Forge client and server files for the same Minecraft release; do not mix them with another major version. |
| Fantasy Skies 1.5.0, listed January 19, 2024 | Use the same pack version for every client and for the server pack. |
| More than 450 mods | Expect many overlapping systems, recipes and interfaces. Search recipes and the quest book instead of relying on memory. |
| 250+ quests | Progress is intended to be followed through objectives and rewards rather than through an undocumented linear walkthrough. |
| Several dimensions | New destinations are part of progression, but the complete official dimension order is not published. |
The “more than 450” and “250+” figures are project-listing claims, not independent performance or playtime measurements. They describe the pack’s breadth, not a promise that every mod is required for the main quest.
What to do first on the starting island
The opening island is both your tutorial area and your first production base. Void worlds punish casual mistakes: a misplaced block, an unprotected mob or an inventory full of irreplaceable items can end a run. Your first objective should therefore be stability, not speed.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Read the quest book before spending scarce materials
Open the quest book as soon as the world loads and inspect the first available chapter. Read the task text, reward preview and any dependency indicators before crafting a tool or processing a resource. In a pack this large, a quest can reward an item that would otherwise require a long detour, while another task may consume the only copy of an early component. Claim rewards deliberately and keep unfamiliar items in a labelled chest until you know whether a later task needs them.
2. Turn the central tree into a protected work zone
Build a platform around the starting tree with a solid perimeter and a second, wider safety ring. Leave enough room for future machines, animal pens and storage rather than filling every square immediately. Put ladders, bridges and expansion paths where a fall cannot destroy the only route back to the island. Lighting and a roof or spawn-proof surface are worthwhile before you begin leaving the area unattended.
- Keep the tree, first crafting area and quest-reward storage inside the safest part of the platform.
- Make a backup route to the island’s core so one broken bridge does not isolate your base.
- Use separate chests for building blocks, quest items, mob drops, food and tools.
- Store irreplaceable rewards before taking them on an expedition.
3. Secure repeatable materials
Do not treat the first hand-sized stack of a material as a renewable supply. Establish repeatable sources for building blocks, fuel, food and basic mob drops before expanding into a new area. The exact resource chain depends on the quests and included mods available in your instance, so follow the recipe viewer and quest rewards rather than assuming a familiar vanilla route.
A good early test is whether you can replace the blocks used to expand your platform, refill food and repair or remake basic tools without gambling your last reserve. If the answer is no, continue improving production on the starting island.

- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.

- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world filled with surprises.

4. Create an emergency kit
Keep a chest near the departure point with spare food, blocks for bridging, a light source, a weapon, a pickaxe and any dimension-specific items the quest book names. Carry only what you can afford to lose. A void death can remove both equipment and the materials needed to recover, so an expedition kit is more valuable than a single powerful item carried alone.
5. Expand in labeled modules
Use separate areas for generation, processing, storage and living space. Leave cable, pipe and walkway corridors even if you have not selected an automation system yet. The pack includes technology and magic options, and replacing a cramped early layout is harder than leaving expansion space from the beginning.
How to follow the dimension progression
The quest book is the authoritative route available to players. The project description confirms dimension-based progression but does not publish a complete quest tree or a guaranteed dimension order. Any guide that presents a fixed sequence as official is making a claim the listing does not establish.
Use quest dependencies as your map
- Finish the currently available island chapter far enough to reveal its unlock or travel objective.
- Read every prerequisite, including collection, crafting, combat and structure requirements.
- Build the destination portal, gate or travel item only after checking the full recipe and the return method.
- Prepare the expedition checklist below, then enter with a disposable test loadout first.
- Record new materials and recipes in your storage labels and return to the quest book before committing to large automation.
Prepare for a destination instead of rushing its unlock
A newly available dimension is not automatically a safe dimension. Treat each first visit as reconnaissance. Carry blocks for a shelter, enough food for the trip, a ranged or close-combat option, spare tools, light sources and a way to mark the return path. If the quest mentions a boss, elite enemy, structure or environmental hazard, postpone the fight until your equipment and recovery plan are ready.

Write down the destination name, portal coordinates, important ores or plants, hostile mobs, return route and any quest item that cannot be replaced. With hundreds of mods, a short note prevents repeated blind trips and helps a server group coordinate who is collecting which material.
Do not lock yourself into one mod system too early
The pack’s feature list includes magic, automation, combat, creatures and exploration systems. Ars Nouveau, Blood Magic and Primal Magick represent different magical approaches; Create supports mechanical automation; Resource Chickens can provide a creature-based resource route; and The Aether adds a major exploration destination. These are examples of the pack’s breadth, not a statement that every one is mandatory at a particular quest stage.

Major systems you may encounter
The following categories help you decide what to learn first without pretending that every named mod is required for the main line.
| System or example | Useful role in a playthrough | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Ars Nouveau, Blood Magic, Primal Magick | Spellcasting, rituals and magical progression can provide tools, combat options or resource processing. | The listing does not identify a single required magic route. |
| Create | Mechanical production lines, movement and processing can reduce repetitive manual work. | Every Create machine is not necessarily part of the quest path. |
| Resource Chickens | Potential renewable-resource production through a creature-based system. | The exact resources and unlock timing are determined by your quests and recipes. |
| Doggy Talents Next, Dragon Mounts: Legacy, Mystical Mounts | Companions and mounts can improve travel, utility and combat support. | A mount is not a substitute for armor, food or a return plan. |
| Epic Samurai’s, Epic Empires, Grimoire of Gaia | Additional weapons, enemies and combat encounters increase the importance of preparation. | Do not assume vanilla armor values or enemy behavior will be sufficient. |
| The Aether and other dimensions | Exploration destinations provide new environments, materials and quest objectives. | The official listing does not supply a complete destination order. |
| Embeddium, Iris 1.6, shaders and Better Mob Animations | Client rendering and visual options can change performance and appearance. | Shaders and animation enhancements are optional presentation features, not progression requirements. |
Combat and exploration preparation
Enhanced combat mechanics and additional hostile creatures make “I have a sword” an incomplete preparation standard. Before a major trip, check the destination’s likely threats and make sure you can recover if the first attempt fails.
- Defense: wear the best armor you can replace, not merely the strongest set you own.
- Damage: carry a weapon suited to the encounter and a backup if durability or special effects matter.
- Range: keep a ranged option for flying, fast or elevated enemies.
- Mobility: bring blocks, food and a clear bridge or shelter plan; a mount is useful only when the destination permits it.
- Recovery: leave a spare kit at the base and mark the portal or return point.
- Inventory: reserve slots for quest drops so an objective cannot fail because the reward or ingredient was left behind.
Lunar events and custom loot crates add uncertainty to the normal routine. Treat event rewards as bonuses until you know their contents and avoid building your entire progression plan around a random drop.
Automation and base design that scales
Skyblock bases become difficult to repair when every machine shares one chest and one walkway. Use a simple zoning plan from the start:
- Core: quest book, bed or spawn point where available, emergency storage and crafting.
- Inputs: farms, trees, animals or other generators that create raw materials.
- Processing: machines, magical structures or mechanical lines that turn inputs into usable components.
- Outputs: labeled storage for building blocks, metals, mob drops, quest items and fuel.
- Expansion: a reserved platform for the next system so a new quest does not force a complete rebuild.
Choose one production chain to make reliable before starting three others. Automation is most valuable when it removes a recurring bottleneck identified by the quest book; building every available machine immediately increases clutter and maintenance without necessarily advancing the story.
Client setup and performance expectations
A pack with more than 450 mods, optional shaders, enhanced animations and multiple dimensions can be demanding, but no authoritative hardware benchmark is published with the project information. Performance will vary with view distance, shader choice, entity counts, world generation and the number of players.

- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen

Start with conservative visual settings
- Launch without shaders on the first world load.
- Use a moderate render distance while new chunks generate.
- Enable visual enhancements one at a time so you can identify which option changes frame rate.
- Close unnecessary programs and watch memory, frame time and disk activity while exploring a new dimension.
Embeddium, Iris 1.6 and shader support are listed features, but their presence does not guarantee a particular frame rate. If an update changes a rendering mod, retest shaders and animated mobs instead of assuming old settings remain stable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to host a Fantasy Skies server
The project page lists a dedicated server-pack file for the 1.20.1 Forge release. That matching pack is the safest compatibility reference available: clients and server should use the same Minecraft, Forge and Fantasy Skies versions.
Server preparation checklist
- Download the server pack that corresponds to the Fantasy Skies release you intend to play, currently listed as 1.5.0 from January 19, 2024.
- Unpack it into a new server directory rather than mixing it with files from another modpack.
- Install or invoke the Forge server files supplied by that pack, following the included launch script or instructions.
- Start once, stop cleanly, and accept Minecraft’s EULA in the generated configuration where required.
- Start again with no players connected and confirm that the world creates, the console reaches a stable running state and the expected mods load without errors.
- Join from a client with the identical pack version and test the starting island, quest book, portal or dimension mechanics in a disposable world.
- Only after that test should you create the persistent world, configure access controls and invite players.
File names and launch arguments can differ between server-pack releases, so use the files included with the selected pack instead of copying a command from an unrelated Forge version.

Test world generation before inviting a group
Generate a temporary world and check the first island, quest availability, chunk loading and a dimension transition. This is particularly important for skyblock packs: a failed generation or missing dependency can leave a server technically online but unplayable. Keep the disposable test world separate from the world you plan to preserve.
Multiplayer habits that prevent avoidable losses
- Tell every player which pack and version to install before they connect.
- Back up the world before a pack update or major dimension expedition.
- Give the group a shared storage convention and a written portal-coordinate log.
- Ask players to announce when they are entering a new dimension so nobody removes a bridge or machine they are using.
- Keep server logs from the first launch and from every update; they are the fastest way to identify a missing or mismatched mod.
RAM and hardware: what is known and what is not
The project listing does not publish a RAM requirement, CPU recommendation, JVM flags or tick-performance measurements. It would be misleading to promise that a specific allocation is sufficient for every client or server.
Instead, size the installation through observation. Start with the launcher and server defaults appropriate to your Java and operating-system setup, then monitor memory usage during three demanding situations: first launch, exploration while new chunks generate and a multiplayer session with the expected number of players. Increase the allocation only when logs or monitoring show memory pressure, and investigate runaway entities, excessive view distance or a faulty mod rather than treating more RAM as a universal fix.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
For a server, record peak memory, tick time and player count during the disposable test world. Keep backups and a rollback copy before changing Java, Forge or mod versions. Those measurements are your environment’s evidence; they are not an official Fantasy Skies specification.

The client cannot join the server
First compare Minecraft version, Forge version, Fantasy Skies version and the installed mod list on both sides. A client using the regular pack against a server using an older or differently packaged server pack can fail before the world loads. Reinstall from the same release files rather than adding random replacement jars.
The world loads but the quest book is missing or incomplete
Stop the server, preserve the world backup and inspect the startup log for failed dependencies or disabled quest data. Verify that the server pack was unpacked completely and that the client is using the matching release. Do not delete world data until you have a backup.
A first expedition ends in a void death
Restore from the recovery chest at the base, rebuild a cheaper kit and return only after marking the route with blocks or signs. Carry fewer irreplaceable items and finish the island’s renewable-resource objectives before attempting the same destination again.
Performance collapses near a base
Separate crowded machines and animal areas, reduce visual settings, test without shaders and inspect whether a single automation line or mob area is creating excessive entities. Compare the result in a backup or test world before dismantling a functioning production system.
A random reward appears to bypass the expected route
Record the reward, but continue checking quest dependencies. Loot crates and event rewards can provide useful shortcuts without proving that the underlying dimension or chapter has been completed in the intended order.
A practical progression checklist
- Read the opening quest chapter and identify its renewable-resource objectives.
- Protect the central-tree island with a safe perimeter, lighting and labeled storage.
- Build repeatable supplies of blocks, food, fuel and basic tools.
- Reserve an emergency expedition kit and recovery chest.
- Expand the base in separate production, processing and storage zones.
- Use quest dependencies to identify the next destination; do not rely on an unofficial fixed order.
- Scout each new dimension with replaceable equipment and a marked return route.
- Choose automation or magic systems according to the bottleneck the quests expose.
- Keep an expedition log containing coordinates, hazards and important drops.
- For multiplayer, match every client to the same 1.20.1 Forge pack and test the server in a disposable world.
- Measure memory and tick behavior in your own client and server environment because the listing supplies no official RAM figure.
Bottom line
Fantasy Skies rewards methodical play. Secure the starting island, make resources renewable, let the quest book reveal the dimension route, and treat every new destination as an expedition that needs preparation. Its large mod count, 250+ quests, combat additions, events and optional visual features create a broad sandbox rather than a short linear tutorial. For multiplayer, use the matching 1.20.1 Forge server pack, test generation before inviting players and base hardware decisions on measured behavior instead of an unsupported universal RAM number.
