Crossplay means that players using different hardware ecosystems can enter the same Don’t Starve Together world. For example, a PC–Xbox pairing would be crossplay, while a Windows player joining a Linux player through Steam is cross-platform only in the everyday sense: both are still in the same PC/Steam pool.
Cross-generation play is different. It lets two versions in one console family use the same multiplayer network, such as PS4 and PS5. It does not mean that PlayStation can join Xbox, Switch or PC.

The practical test is simple: can the two accounts see and join the same hosted world through the game’s normal multiplayer browser or invitation system? If they are in different pools, no setting, port-forwarding change or friend-list workaround merges them.

The table describes the status reported by third-party platform guides, not a complete compatibility statement from Klei. The most reliable conclusion is the separation between the PC pool and console pools. The exact Switch behavior is less directly documented than the PC, PlayStation and Xbox groupings.
Can PC and Xbox play Don’t Starve Together together?
Current reports say no. Steam players cannot officially join friends playing the Xbox edition, and an Xbox player cannot use the Xbox network to enter a PC-hosted world. This applies across the Xbox family: Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud are reported as one Xbox pool, but that pool remains separate from Steam.
Older internet guides can create confusion. One guide dated 2023 says PC–Xbox crossplay works; newer platform-status digests treat that claim as outdated and say crossplay is not supported. Unless a current Klei announcement changes the service, plan on buying and playing in the same platform pool as your friends.

Can PlayStation players join PC players?
Not according to the current reports. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players are described as one PlayStation group, while PC remains a separate Steam group. A PS5 owner therefore can play with a PS4 friend, but not with a Windows, macOS or Linux player through the game’s standard multiplayer service.
Reported PS5 availability
Two news or syndication pages report that the console edition reached PS5 in October 2025. Their publication dates were not independently verified, and no retrieved Klei page confirmed the release details. The PS5 availability report should therefore be read separately from the crossplay question: the PS5 version may be available while still being limited to the PlayStation pool.
Does the Switch version have crossplay?
Switch is treated in the available platform guides as a separate console group. That means you should not assume a Switch owner can join PC, Xbox or PlayStation friends. The Switch separation is an inference from the guides’ separate platform lists rather than a directly verified Switch-specific Klei statement, so check the current Nintendo eShop listing and in-game version information before buying for a group.
Even if two editions show the same game name, crossplay requires shared online services, compatible builds and account authentication. A shared title or a common update number does not prove that the platforms can meet in one world.

How to play together when everyone is in the same pool
Once every player is in the same platform group, use the normal multiplayer flow. Menu wording can differ slightly by edition and update, but the sequence is consistent:
- Confirm the platform pool. Put every player on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch as applicable. PS4/PS5 and the Xbox generations listed above count as the same respective pools.
- Install the same current game update. Pause until each platform finishes its update. Mismatched builds can prevent a friend’s world from appearing even when the platforms are compatible.
- Sign in to the platform network. Verify that each player is online, not in an offline mode, and using the account that owns the game and its online entitlement.
- Add or select friends through the platform’s social system. The host should use the platform friend list or the game’s own friends/invite entry, depending on the edition.
- Have one player host a world. Set the world’s privacy and access options, then start it. The host’s console or PC must remain online for the session unless the edition provides another hosting method.
- Join from the multiplayer browser or invitation. Other players should accept the invitation or refresh the available-world list. If the world is private, the host must invite each intended player.
- Test with a short session first. Confirm that everyone can connect before investing in a long-lived world or configuring mods and custom settings.
These steps cannot bridge platform pools. They only help when all participants are already on a compatible network.
Do saves, characters and unlocks transfer between platforms?
Cross-progression and shared unlocks are not verified by the available material. Do not assume that a character, world, skins, recipes, achievements or other progress made on Steam will appear on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. The same caution applies when moving between console families.
A platform-family pairing such as PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Series X|S may offer account or save continuity, but the scope of that continuity was not established here. Before changing platforms, check the edition’s current account, save-transfer and downloadable-content documentation. Treat a new platform purchase as a potentially separate progression environment until the publisher explicitly says otherwise.

Old guides remain indexed
Crossplay articles often retain their original publication year while platform services change. The 2023 PC–Xbox claim conflicts with newer reports and should not be used as a buying decision without a current official confirmation.
Rumoured PS5 announcements were broader than the evidence
Some reports describe a September 2025 PS5 announcement together with full PC/Xbox crossplay. The PS5 release itself is reported for October 2025, but the full-crossplay portion was not confirmed by an official Klei source. Availability of a PS5 edition is therefore not evidence that PlayStation can connect to PC or Xbox.

Mobile reports conflict
One digest says a mobile port arrived in July 2026; another says there was no multiplayer mobile release. Neither position was verified through a primary source. Mobile should not be added to a crossplay plan unless the current store listing and publisher documentation explicitly identify multiplayer compatibility.
“Crossplay is a goal” is not present-tense support
A digest references a Shared Unlocks FAQ that reportedly lists full crossplay as a goal, but the FAQ itself was not retrieved. A development goal, forum paraphrase or old roadmap does not establish that the feature is live in the current build.

Choosing a platform for a friend group
Choose based first on where the people you actually play with already own the game:
- All on PC: Steam versions on Windows, macOS and Linux are reported to share one pool.
- All on PlayStation: PS4 and PS5 are reported to play together.
- All on Xbox: Xbox One, Series X|S and Xbox Cloud are reported to share a pool.
- Mixed PC and console group: There is no reported official bridge, so the group must use one compatible pool or split into separate sessions.
- Switch group: Treat Switch as its own pool unless a current official listing specifically confirms otherwise.
Also verify the edition’s online requirements, storage space, controller or keyboard preferences and update support for your hardware. Those practical factors matter only after the platform pool matches.

- Ask every friend which exact platform and generation they use, not just whether they own “the console version.”
- Compare that list with the compatibility table above.
- Look for a current publisher statement or store description that explicitly says “cross-platform” or names the two systems. Do not infer support from screenshots, a shared title or a cross-save reference.
- Confirm the game version and online-service requirements on each platform.
- If the group depends on PS5 availability, verify that the edition is listed in your region; the October 2025 date is reported, not independently confirmed here.
- Keep receipts and avoid assuming that progress or unlocks will migrate between ecosystems.
Troubleshooting a same-platform connection
The friend or world does not appear
- Recheck that everyone is in the same platform pool and that no one accidentally launched a different edition.
- Install pending updates on every device and restart the game after updating.
- Confirm that each account is online and that platform privacy settings allow multiplayer invitations.
- Have the host reopen the world with the intended privacy setting, then resend the invitation.
One player connects but is removed
- Check connection stability on both the host and joining device.
- Test an unmodified, short session to rule out a world-specific or configuration-specific problem.
- Verify that the host remains online and that the session has not ended.
A PC player is trying to join a console friend
Stop troubleshooting network settings first. The reported platform separation means the problem is compatibility, not necessarily your router, NAT type or invitation. Use the same platform pool or plan separate sessions.
Bottom line on Don’t Starve Together crossplay
As of 14 October 2026, the safe answer is that Don’t Starve Together has no reported PC-to-console crossplay. Steam players on Windows, macOS and Linux play together; PS4/PS5 and the Xbox generations are reported to form their own separate pools; Switch is treated separately, with less direct verification. PS5 availability is reported from October 2025, but that does not imply PC or Xbox crossplay. Because the available status comes from third-party guides rather than a retrieved Klei confirmation, check the latest official platform documentation immediately before buying or scheduling a group session.
